I haven't been on Cinemaphile on years and just decided to check out Adventure Time again for the first time in nearly a decade. I was also surprised to find so many AT threads up.
Pb's nature is to create and nurture, but also to be overbearing and domineering. Every iteration of her has those four properties in some ratio. Goliad is what happens when you frick up that mixture in a way that skews towards evil, where main pb tends to hover more around neutral

I think the reason Jake made it to the 50th deadworld wasn't to do with how moral he was, but rather how "zen" he could be. Even in the original pilot, Jake's seen meditating. He's a lot more spiritual than Finn and you could see his sort of semi-Buddhist ideals leading him to be able to detach himself from the world and ascend to the adventure time equivalent of nirvana. Which is probably why he forgot who Finn was at first.

He's spiritually more Finn's son in that regard though. He's biologically a product of PB's candy science and Finn's genetics, yielded from a strand of his hair, which would be responsible for his just and good nature. It having been linked to the catalyst comet responsible for his incarnations across several lives makes that seem clear.
Calling him his son feels weird when he's more just a biologically-engineered spawn using his genes as a means to an end, but I guess Finn wishing him a happy birthday makes it fair to say he regards him as his kin.

I've been thinking lately how the Fionna we see in the show is already a loser adult, and assuming she got her whole life and history retconned, I can't help but wonder how her life was before first see her in the show, like what's her relationship with her parents? Did her Martin equivalent leave her? When did she meet Gary and Marshall? When did she get Cake? Etc.

Finn x Fionna is one of those situation where a studio has gold on their hands but is refusing to utilize it for vacuous spiteful reasons
Literally everyone would love it, they'd be breaking new ground, and bring crazy attention to the show, but they went for the "muh multiverse constant" bullshit with HW, which would be great if they actually fricking showed them together

We literally see how Fionna and her world were conceived, Prismo wasn't even aware he was ripping off Finn and Jake at first. Had he knowingly copied an existing universe with Finn and Jake and hit the "genderswap" button you'd have a point, but Fionna's origin and her universe's origin are way different to any of the Finns we saw, for example Farmworld is a direct offshoot of our Finn's universe, but Fionna is basically Prismo's idea of a female adventurer hero with Finn's passing resemblance made real.

That doesn't change the fact her origin was a fanfic and she doesn't share the same personal or universe history as all the other universes that branched off from existing ones, those are true alt universes that were "meant to be all along" whereas she was manifested from nothing. The Simon that got killed in Vampire World is basically identical to our Simon up until the point he was killed, meanwhile Fionna was made from scratch and loaded with some of the same visual and personality traits as Finn based on Prismo's superficial knowledge, the show even stresses she's her own person.
Imagine if Prismo created an empty vessel person, then went "I'll call them uhh Simon" then made that vessel look and behave like Simon based on what he knows, that vessel wouldn't somehow become a true alt universe variant of Simon, just some lifeform that looks and vaguely acts like him.

True, but the new show's Fionna doesn't feel as bad in that regard as the OG Fionna, they made her into a separate person with passing resemblance to Finn
To me the only thing supporting her being a Finn in the show is her thirst for adventure, which she lets go off in the Winter King episode, I don't know of anything else that they have in common. It feels like they made her a self-insert for 30-something women stuck in a rut.
To me it's the fact that she looks like a girl Finn, and has many of Finn's traits such as acting without thinking and generally not being 100% emotionally mature.

Cake even wants Fionna and Farmworld Finn to kiss, and then later Simon and Winter King, and no one thinks there's anything wrong with it, the show is clearly fine with the idea.
I like Finn and HW, in theory, in practice she's a glorified background character. I feel like Finn deserves more than a token romance interest and should instead have a relationship with a fully fledged character, the way PB and Marcy were each characters in their own respects before their relationship. And HW could be more than a background character, for example if we got a couple more seasons and she got to actually do stuff in them but they basically refuse to show her at all.
Background characters in AT get expanded all the time, Peppermint Butler got tons of episodes and presence and even a whole Distant Lands special all to himself, and I liked it, but I think he had more screentime in Wizard City than HW and all her alt universe versions did combined.
Maybe I'm naive, but I really think we're in for HW development. All her mentions and references in F/C seem to point to them considering her in the central orbit of Main Dudes.
But they can't do much more than hints and references right now, because half-developments wouldn't be satisfying, and there were other characters/stories higher on their priority and ideas list that need to be tackled full on, lest they don't get greenlit for more stuff. Finn's relationship to and ending with Jake came first, Simon came first.
If they show her in domestic bliss to Finn, that feels like a happy ending. She and Finn need to be in a position of exploration/beginning, in the audiences eyes. And she would need an arc to support her relationship to Finn, because of her values of being a lone wolf that we saw in the show.
She is in a sense a glorified background character, but I feel like we've got a pretty firm grasp of who she is and in what ways she's cool. She feels like a pretty good fit for Finn.

Some people have people who were so important to them, so perfect with them, that it really is like being handicapped and incomplete when they're gone. And that is absolutely what Jake was to Finn. Finn's great by himself, Jake's great by himself, but together they are godly in synchronicity, compatibility, and what they do for each other. It's one of those friendships that are straight up divine - different personalities that match and enhance. Would you be as interested in AT if the MC was just Finn, or just Jake?
But incompleteness is very often the source of different kind of divinities and beauty. It's a motivator of strength that couldn't be achieved while in the paradise of functional and loving codependence.
But as strong as you get, as many joys as you feel, would you ever be able to say that you don't want the piece that completed you back? Especially in a world where you know for a solid fact that seeing them and living with them again is possible?
Finn probably continues to live a colorful and intense and happy and complicated life. But he carries a scar and a loss, like the stump on his shoulder.
Like, some people can't handle and are swallowed up by their holes, while some people become badasses who fight to stay on their feet and sit on a throne above their holes. Grow a garden and raises some kids on the platform they established.
The Finn I see is one who is fighting and winning. But the holes are still there for them to see and think about, to tug on their heart in quiet moments.

Could also be because Marcy found her hot and because PB is humanoid it made her more appealing. In the Obsidian episode she talks about how cold and distant PB is and how she's obsessive when it comes to her kingdom. She also was pushing human qualities on to her. It took time for PB to develop and grow emotionally because she's simply not human. In the episode where her gum family members become dum she's quick to make them dance and she had the same type of reaction to Goliad. The difference is PB had time to learn and people who she cared for even if it took her a while
Marcy keeps calling her cute, pretty, and smart. She's such a simp. If Marcy wasn't so patient and PB wasn't for some reason humanoid I could see things going south. Now that I think about it Marcy must have been desperate for any kind of human. PB just taking the form of one because of being a mutated chewed piece of gum was lucky for her. Though I guess Marcy gets something out of spending time with PB. Maybe PB acts as a more logical point of view to Marcy's often emotional side.
There's also a theory that they were destined since the mother gum "saved" Marcy with the soup and in turn gave them a chance to meet at all. But PB being humanoid definitely helped as I don't see Marceline paying her any mind if she was like slime princess for example

Also, the thirst for fellow humanoids is real, but a girl whose shtick is candy and sweetness and creating a soft fairytale kingdom must have been wildly inviting to Marcy; a girl who was dragged into the darkness and has been living hundreds of years wandering hostile wastelands or cooped up in a banana shitting Hell.

I don't think he would be reincarnated. It's not known if everyone gets reincarnated. We know Finn does and Princess Bubblegum but she's the embodiment of the candy elemental.
In the episode where PB "helps" flame princess we see just how emotionally distant she can be. She doesn't care for her at all really and it makes PB look like a c**t but really she just has her kingdom and peoples best interest at heart. She's also not like monarchs in real life as she quite literally built her kingdom from the ground up. We see her have things like diplomacy in high regard and again I think this is due to her having a weird romanticized notion of what it means to be a princess/ruler. We see that she's capable in later seasons and in flashbacks but at the start of the series she was more tame mainly because she had her "champions"

Lots of kissing and Marceline coping about how she'll just "turn Finn into a vampire or find a fountain of youth or some junk" when he turns 18, and then that comes and goes and she says she's actually going to turn him when he's 25 and has filled out a bit more, and then THAT comes and goes and Finn's 30 and she copes about how she likes older men anyway, and then that passes too and Finn is really starting to worry about this problem himself. The two try to ignore it and live their lives, Finn's a hero, he really can not be turning into a vampire, and maybe excuses it by saying with his lifestyle he'll run into death-by-adventure sooner or later anyway. And then before either of them know it he's 65, he's lived a hard but rewarding life, and she watches him die in a hospital bed.
Things are completely as usual, after 'Too Young', maybe come up with a better reason than muh age like her responsibilities as queen and so PB rejects Finn wholesale
Marcy sees Finn in the dumps about it and he explains he's given up on PB. Hearing this she looks unexpectedly kinda happy

Wasn't the entire reason that Goliad was created because PB wanted a successor after realizing she would die one day? And then it was later revealed that she was an immortal candy elemental that personally founded the Candy Kingdom hundreds of years ago?

This shit comes close to what I mean when I say that if we see the girls again in a 1000+ setting, I want them to be different. More grown up and wise, but eerie. Like not nightmare fuel, but they act a bit more fricked up and a bit more distant from normal human behaviour. I want to feel the milleniums on their minds
Interesting concept, but I feel like we already see time taking it's toll on both. Marcy is pretty callous in Evicted and PB is nigh amoral. Though they soften as the show goes on.
That's still believable human levels of fricked up. I'm not completely talking about moral detachments either, I actually think they'd be better at doing the right thing and stronger about doing it. But they'd be "off" in some bizarre or subtle ways. And stiller and steadier and feeling like they're staring at something miles away
At most I see them getting bored, especially Marcy. But I guess PB keeps things interesting so it won't be that bad. If anything PB has gotten more human like in behavior. That or she got better at mimicking humans.

Season 5 episode 33 is pretty great. No particularly cringe aspects, no points where things feel overly slow. The sandwich making process was fun to watch, BMO's whole thing with the skateboarding ramp and all that was great. PB's efforts amounting to nothing, and Marceline seemingly intentionally just making BMO's skate thing more rad was funny. It actually made me like Magic Man, where as every appearance prior to this he was mostly un-fun to watch with only a few upsides.

Also he likely sees a lot less of Marcy due to her being a night lurking vampire. Calling up PB is a normal day for him, but getting Marcy out is a more difficult and thus less frequent occurrence. So it's also a "oh Marceline, really?" moment

Well what's your explanation for why he would be dumbfounded? Just seems logical. Finn wasn't around for their sky witch bonding mission. The last time we saw him seeing them, Marcy spat on her.
And we can see from the whole series that Marcy isn't someone that gets seen all the time. Calling up MTVQ ain't something he hears people say every day, and never from PB before
Red Starved was a fun episode about Marcy going feral on Jake. It included a funny moment at the end where she eats PB instead, leaving her looking like gum on the sidewalk. It's not that deep

The catalyst commit was originally the Lich and reincarnated. Same as the elementals that get reincarnated like PB for example showing up in the other universes
Watching the first few episodes of Adventure Time and then the episode with Fionna killing the Candy Queens minions and saying "this is what was missing" hit hard. Her whole life was fricked over and she was drifting along in her world feeling empty for a reason.
This Rootbeer Guy episode is kinda great. The 10 minutes felt more like 20 or 30 somehow. "Suspenseful" isn't quite the word for it, but it somehow really drew me in, felt like it really had a payoff, and at the same time really showed a view into life in the candy kingdom.
Also Rootbeer Guy's wife pulling out the French maid larp was sure something. She's also some kind of academic or medical person given she gave some kind of lecture or something a day or two prior. Yup, French maid outfit, the thinking woman's lingerie.
The ending where his typewriter is tossed out is bitter sweet. He's gone up in the world, in a way became the character he was writing about, but doesn't that also mean he gave up on his dreams of being an author?
Also it really was a genuine twist at the end, it was clear enough that F+J weren't murdering PB, but I didn't expect it to be a security test.
The FBI/mysterious figure thing F+J were doing with the outfits and glasses was great. Detective BMO used to be one of my top favorites as far as "weird" episodes went, but I think this beats it.
I also really loved the character design on the housecat.

Depends what you mean, because outside of miniseries and specials it stays "episodic" or rather slice of lifish through almost the whole series. It's just that some characters have storylines that spread through the whole show. For example "crystals have power" is a continuation of "tree trunks", "sons of mars" is a continuation of "city of freaks", "henchman" is a continuation of "evicted" etc.

I think the reason Jake made it to the 50th deadworld wasn't to do with how moral he was, but rather how "zen" he could be. Even in the original pilot, Jake's seen meditating. He's a lot more spiritual than Finn and you could see his sort of semi-Buddhist ideals leading him to be able to detach himself from the world and ascend to the adventure time equivalent of nirvana. Which is probably why he forgot who Finn was at first.

We literally see how Fionna and her world were conceived, Prismo wasn't even aware he was ripping off Finn and Jake at first. Had he knowingly copied an existing universe with Finn and Jake and hit the "genderswap" button you'd have a point, but Fionna's origin and her universe's origin are way different to any of the Finns we saw, for example Farmworld is a direct offshoot of our Finn's universe, but Fionna is basically Prismo's idea of a female adventurer hero with Finn's passing resemblance made real.
But the character itself didn't come from his imagination, he MADE her. Also, he said after he realized he made characters similar to finn and jake he "ran with it" and made counterparts for everybody. Prismo made them counterparts of finn and jake.
That doesn't change the fact her origin was a fanfic and she doesn't share the same personal or universe history as all the other universes that branched off from existing ones, those are true alt universes that were "meant to be all along" whereas she was manifested from nothing. The Simon that got killed in Vampire World is basically identical to our Simon up until the point he was killed, meanwhile Fionna was made from scratch and loaded with some of the same visual and personality traits as Finn based on Prismo's superficial knowledge, the show even stresses she's her own person.
Imagine if Prismo created an empty vessel person, then went "I'll call them uhh Simon" then made that vessel look and behave like Simon based on what he knows, that vessel wouldn't somehow become a true alt universe variant of Simon, just some lifeform that looks and vaguely acts like him.

I like Finn and HW, in theory, in practice she's a glorified background character. I feel like Finn deserves more than a token romance interest and should instead have a relationship with a fully fledged character, the way PB and Marcy were each characters in their own respects before their relationship. And HW could be more than a background character, for example if we got a couple more seasons and she got to actually do stuff in them but they basically refuse to show her at all.
Background characters in AT get expanded all the time, Peppermint Butler got tons of episodes and presence and even a whole Distant Lands special all to himself, and I liked it, but I think he had more screentime in Wizard City than HW and all her alt universe versions did combined.
Maybe I'm naive, but I really think we're in for HW development. All her mentions and references in F/C seem to point to them considering her in the central orbit of Main Dudes.
But they can't do much more than hints and references right now, because half-developments wouldn't be satisfying, and there were other characters/stories higher on their priority and ideas list that need to be tackled full on, lest they don't get greenlit for more stuff. Finn's relationship to and ending with Jake came first, Simon came first.
If they show her in domestic bliss to Finn, that feels like a happy ending. She and Finn need to be in a position of exploration/beginning, in the audiences eyes. And she would need an arc to support her relationship to Finn, because of her values of being a lone wolf that we saw in the show.
She is in a sense a glorified background character, but I feel like we've got a pretty firm grasp of who she is and in what ways she's cool. She feels like a pretty good fit for Finn.

The difference is PB had time to learn and people who she cared for even if it took her a while

Her eyes become large, red spheres, making them highly sensitive to natural sunlight, which also makes it frustrating for Marceline to go outside during the daytime.
At age 4,000, Marceline's appearance becomes so horrifying, most people either run in terror or even faint from the shear sight of her! From that point on, Marceline resorts to shielding herself off from the rest of the world, now living in her very own castle inside a cave where no sunlight can get to her, only going out exclusively at night, so she won't end up scaring anyone unintentionally. From this point on, Marceline lives a rather lonely life without anyone to give her company . . . Save for one.
Every few weeks, Princess Bubblegum sneaks out of The Candy Kingdom in disguise so she can be with Marceline. Despite her friend's terrifying appearance, Princess Bubblegum does her best to support Marceline. Marceline tells PB she doesn't have to keep visiting her, but every time she does, Marcy is grateful to have her in her presence. PB is unsettled by her Marcy's transformation, but she reminds herself to look past her monstrous form, knowing the true heart of her best friend still resides within.
I thought this was kind of a dumb idea until I saw Redstar or whatever the episode is called where they're in the sand lands (Great colorblind joke in that episode actually). Marcie is definitely bald in her hungry-vamp form.

Interesting concept, but I feel like we already see time taking it's toll on both. Marcy is pretty callous in Evicted and PB is nigh amoral. Though they soften as the show goes on.
That's still believable human levels of fricked up. I'm not completely talking about moral detachments either, I actually think they'd be better at doing the right thing and stronger about doing it. But they'd be "off" in some bizarre or subtle ways. And stiller and steadier and feeling like they're staring at something miles away
At most I see them getting bored, especially Marcy. But I guess PB keeps things interesting so it won't be that bad. If anything PB has gotten more human like in behavior. That or she got better at mimicking humans.

Season 5 episode 33 is pretty great. No particularly cringe aspects, no points where things feel overly slow. The sandwich making process was fun to watch, BMO's whole thing with the skateboarding ramp and all that was great. PB's efforts amounting to nothing, and Marceline seemingly intentionally just making BMO's skate thing more rad was funny. It actually made me like Magic Man, where as every appearance prior to this he was mostly un-fun to watch with only a few upsides.
The only thing I really don't like about time sandwich is bubbline parasite sticking out its ugly head again.

Red Starved was a fun episode about Marcy going feral on Jake. It included a funny moment at the end where she eats PB instead, leaving her looking like gum on the sidewalk. It's not that deep

It’s possible it would be the same being honestly. Golb reached all realms including the made up one that was unofficial meaning his scholars would be the same. All those puzzle pieces are possibly the Lich from other worlds. They will create the kingdom of Golb once ALL life has been extinguished

The "I don't know why they have to make out so close to our house" joke is probably the best for that entire episode.
Watching the first few episodes of Adventure Time and then the episode with Fionna killing the Candy Queens minions and saying "this is what was missing" hit hard. Her whole life was fricked over and she was drifting along in her world feeling empty for a reason.

This Rootbeer Guy episode is kinda great. The 10 minutes felt more like 20 or 30 somehow. "Suspenseful" isn't quite the word for it, but it somehow really drew me in, felt like it really had a payoff, and at the same time really showed a view into life in the candy kingdom.
Also Rootbeer Guy's wife pulling out the French maid larp was sure something. She's also some kind of academic or medical person given she gave some kind of lecture or something a day or two prior. Yup, French maid outfit, the thinking woman's lingerie.
The ending where his typewriter is tossed out is bitter sweet. He's gone up in the world, in a way became the character he was writing about, but doesn't that also mean he gave up on his dreams of being an author?
Also it really was a genuine twist at the end, it was clear enough that F+J weren't murdering PB, but I didn't expect it to be a security test.
The FBI/mysterious figure thing F+J were doing with the outfits and glasses was great. Detective BMO used to be one of my top favorites as far as "weird" episodes went, but I think this beats it.
I also really loved the character design on the housecat.

It's just that some characters have storylines that spread through the whole show. For example "crystals have power" is a continuation of "tree trunks", "sons of mars" is a continuation of "city of freaks", "henchman" is a continuation of "evicted" etc.
