After many years of seeing people praising picrel as the best Spider-Men animated series (i doubted it because it looked like shit based on some footage i saw) i finally gave in and gave it a try.
And what a surprise - it turned out to be agressively average, and having nothing on 94' series.
Both stylistically and substance wise Spectacular its such a basic 8yo cable tv cartoon, its impossible to take it seriously or have the place for it in the heart or mind.
Its not that bad of a cartoon, but come on, no one in their healthy state of mind would claim that Spectacular is better than or even as good as 94' cartoon.

I prefer '94 too, but Spectacular is still head and shoulder above every other Spider-man cartoon.
I would only recommend '94 and Spectacular to people..

Also 94-gay, I like MTV for what it is.
The darker tone and storylines, the music. Could've used more comic villains, but I guess something was in the way. Would've loved to see its take on Venom though.

The fact that it was supposed to be a sequel to Raimi-Man 1 was holding them back from using other villains, since they didn’t want mess up anything.

At least we know Captain Stacy dies in Spectacular

I consider the troonyverse as canon to real Spectacular as the original comics that had Morlun kill Capcom and Amazing Friends.

I don't think westerners opinions on style matters, most of you over fetishize realism (every western AAA game looks the fricking same) and despise anything remotely aesthetic or unique, you people are the most stylistically bland bunch ever

I agree for the most part but spectacular actually does have a nice athletic with the backgrounds and colors. Also, even though I hate it, spider verse is literally all aesthetic

The ironic thing here is people who hate the art style would probably prefer it if it was done in a generic anime style.

The actual animation is the most fluid out of any spider-man show, especially comapred to 94 that had to constantly re-use footage because the budget got cut.

Spectacular has its issues...but id say they're less than 94's. The pacing is better, the subplots are better woven into the idnivudal episodes. The stories that get more play make actual sense with the source material, there's less random changes (super soldier black cat, nazi electro, carnage tied to dormamu, hobgoblin before green goblin, kraven is just lovesick, insidious six instead of sinister six, morbious banging black cat) its not paced like a madman on speed going trough 4 plot points a minute with 7 flashbacks in every episode, spider-man can actually throw a punch or plot over character constantly. I do like 94 a lot too (im very nostalgic for it)...but it holds up less.

I really went in this show blind and only heard good things about it. It's so fricking bland and boring. I can even ignore god-awful style, but I am just not entertained. People say it's best Spidey cartoon, yet I watched 1.5 episodes and never touched it again.
Guess I am moronic and filtered, I still don't get how it is good.

Its a good show, it has its flaws and i would argue spectacular was better, but objectivley its one of the two best spider-man shows.

I mean the reused animation and varying animation quality can be a bit much, but everything else makes up for it.
        The writing's quick and to-the-point
It adapts a lot of interesting stories
It had guest cameos that are cool without trying to take over the show
It does the soap opera elements well for a kids' show
Peter is a college chad which is what he should be instead of a high-schooler
Kingpin is the best 'behind-the-scenes' villain, Osborn isn't as good at it.
There's some weird stuff, but it does so much right that you can forgive an occasional flaw.

          >The writing is quick and to the point
Some of the quips are great, but the writing is incredebly overbrought, its not quick at all, unless you mean that there's no breathing room or moments of silence and that there's dialogue constantly, thens ure.
          >It adapts a lot of intresting stories
It adapts a lot of stuff, that is true. But the stuff that is adapted is incredibly mish mashed without much tought or coherence.
          >Guests dont overtake the show
Huh season 2 is overtaken by blade and punisher both? And season 5 is basically nothing but guest stuff. It absoltuley does get overtaken.
          >Soap opera
The problem is that the characters arent really well fleshed out, so most dynamics end up feeling like they're dictated by the plot rather than character. Which is the opposite of soap opera.
          >College
I do prefer the college era, but it should also be said that the high school stuff was a (brief) part of the story, so there's a poit to not skipping it too. Even if now we're in the opposite end of the spectrum
          >Kingpin is the best behind the scenes villain
Osborn is very effective in that role, the comics are proof of that (he even did so under ditko lol). Kingpin is also good in this role (spidey has a lot of planner villains), but tas runs into the issue that the two don't meet until season 3 and then barely interact, with kingpin being taken down anticlmiatcly in the golden age arc.

I think it's because the comcis lore took a bit from it. I don't think spectacular had much of an impact to the comcis so I guess that's what makes it seem as lesser to people? I dunno.

Spectacular has had an impact on it too? At least as much as tas has (which is mostly the venom bit). It elevated tombstone to the second crime lord (prior he was what, fourth?). Led to changes in rhino and the head writer did an actual 616 flash story that was used later for agent venom.

            >the characters arent really well fleshed out
They are, though? Characterizations are one of the strongest parts of TAS.

              Anonymous

No they are not. What was the characterization of Shocker and Rhino? Electro was a Nazi in TAS. Dr. Octopus had schziphrenic characterization going from disgruntled mentor to mad scientist to common crook/blackmailer/opportunist. Vulture goes from wanting to be young to trying to find a cure to suddenly becoming a supervillain working for Kingpin.

                Anonymous

                >Shocker
Shocker and Rhino are generic grunts that barely have any screentime. I don't even remember if either of them had their own episodes.
Their only purpose is to job to Black Suit Spider-Man/Venom and then job again. Kinda silly to expect much characterization from them.
                >Doctor Octopus
                What? He's perfectly fine.
The shift from a scientist to criminal started with his second appearance due to Fisk dragging him out of prison and offering money and resources. The blackmail makes sense given the history between Otto and Hardy, it was probably 50% business 50% personal enjoyment for him.
                >Electro
I'm pretty sure anything they could've done with Electro was sidetracked by that one Cameron movie that never happened, which is why we never got Sandman in that series. There was too much bullshit attached to them I guess so I can't blame the series entirely.
                >Vulture
He was already young again when he worked for Fisk, his goal was complete. Fisk is a billionaire crime lord after all, he probably offered him a lot of money so nothing really egregious.

      >with laser guns everywhere
I never understood the laser-gun hate.
Laser guns are cooler than regular guns (and more accurate in cartoons. A good guy could take a laser-gun blast and be hurt, but they wouldn't show a bullet-wound)

It's more so just how apparent they are and the bigger thing that batman had real guns at the same time. And that spiderman couldn't punch

The police and even common hoods have laser guns. Not to mention Blade having a fricking lightsaber. The problem is the over-abundance of everyone having scifi weapons that in the end the coolness factor is gone because of this.

          Anonymous

          >the over-abundance of everyone having scifi weapons
Criminals are supplied with weapons by Fisk and he sends out 3 huge robots in the second episode.
Makes more sense for people to have access to laser guns than it does for everyone to be using ancient tech compared to the main cast.

this is either a troll or you're blinded by nostalgia goggles. besides the first few episodes of spidey 94, production value went to shit (Recycled frames, awkward fight scenes, horrible pacing)... spidey 94 had some great ideas, some horrible ones (electro being red skull's son wtf) and i enjoy it for what it was, but compared to spectacular which, though had a cliffhanger ending, had a cohesive plot, amazing fight choreography and solid dialog all throughout

Season 2 was pretty bad? If not for season 4 it'd be the worst season.
        >6 arms plot goes from being a two issue little story to lasting a whole season in an overbrought manner
        >Morbious is treated as a major villain, appearing more times than ock, goblin and venom

        >Punisher in a show that cant do guns

        >Felicia x Morbious romance

Spectacular, TMNT 2003, and The Batman are the holy trinity of bog standard 2000's American action cartoons that people who grew up with them inflate their quality far too much.
Speaking as someone who borderline grew up on them too- there's a reason why everyone started watching action anime instead.

Just that the symbiote makes you angry. It was also the first spider-multiverse story, but shattered dimensions made that popular
