Alan Moore teaches how to write a character

>Stan Lee came out with a kind of formula, where he would give a personal problem to his characters. To his bad guys and good guys. So they were now a good guy, but had problem finding a girlfriend. Or they were a good guy but had a bad leg, which, apparently, having a bad leg is considered a "character trait" in that kind of comic book. So this is a two dimensional character. There's nothing really to them. They don't resemble human beings. If you want a three-dimensional character, you need to take that further.

the whole reason I started watching wire was because I read an interview where he was asked if he watches tv and he said the wire is probably the most interesting thing atm (at that time)

He's a bitter old man. I can't help but sympathize with him as a leftist, and to a certain extent I do agree with him, I'm just way more distant.

Also, when it comes to Superheroes he just kind of hates the entire industry with a passion for the business side of things.

There’s literally nothing wrong with what he’s saying here yet people will seethe. You wouldn’t get away with writing a character taking inspiration from Stan Lee era comic books because it would crash and burn in the current era. He’s giving good advice.

  7. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

He's right and he's wrong, but mostly wrong. The thing is to use that characteristic as a starting point. So let's say you have a character who can't get a girlfriend. Fine, but why? He's an incel? Why? Because he jerk offs until his wiener bleeds. Now you're starting to build a back story, you're building character.

He’s not wrong in the slightest, he literally says to do what you say to do. “If you want a three-dimensional character, you need to take that further.”

Characters don't need to have any traits at all. All they have to do is want something and do their best to get it, i.e. the plot. Anything further and you end up with vain nonsense

Motivation is the primary starting point for a story. Conflict is the next major point. "What does the character want, and why can't he get it?" is what they teach in any worthwhile scriptwriting class.

Yeah Black person, they were two-dimensional because they were comic books made for children. The whole point was that they had simple, understandable flaws that could sometimes be brought up in a 4 or 5-panel strip, but otherwise didn't get in the way of them SOCK BIFF POW'ing bad guys, or could sometimes be brought up in the middle of a big situation so they can just say HOW WILL BAD-LEGMAN GET OUT OF THIS ONE?

Because kids don't care about the fact that this character doesn't agree with Nixon's economic ideas or that there is a brutal war going on in Vietnam. Those things aren't important to a fricking superhero for kids. They want Spider-Man do to Spider-Man things like shoot webs and punch bad guys in the face.

Stan Lee Marvel comics were longer than 5 panels, it's not fricking Garfield. Also the idea that stories have to be stupid for kids is promoting them to grow into stupid adults.

3 dimensional characters are characters that are so fully fleshed out that you understand why they do the things that they do
1 dimensional characters are characters that are bad/good because they are bad/good
2 dimensional characters are the same as 1 dimensional characters except they have some trait that makes them stand out

Designing a character in isolation will always be lacking some depth. Only after writing a full story, having them pursue a goal and develop relationships with other characters can you get an organic 3D portrait of them.
