Twitter sure is eating this up.
Really now? What's the reception to this?
Some have been calling it, in so far as DC raping their entire cosmic canon by saying that the only reason Alan was straight in all previous canons was due to "Red Lantern having been grabbed from the timestream and removed from Alan's life"
wow if i was a homosexual i'd be offended by this.
imagine writing the same story for a gay character that turns straight.
>a gay character that turns straight.
Will never happen
Perhaps not in the comics themselves. But in terms of adaptation, they are more than likely to be.
>COLD WAR YAOI IS REAL!
Well, for what it's worth. It did bring some attention to it beyond the usual premise. If Sheridan doesn't fumble anymore than he has. Then he could play into it. Everyone loves an enemies to lover or a lover to enemies quarrel. Though if it does gain traction, I'd suspect more fan works doing the heavy lifting.
I don't like it when it's gay, so no thank you.
I am sure someone out there has art of Alan and the Harlequinn together.
It's both sad and funny how much they're ignoring Molly now that Alan is gay, they truly don't care for her.
The same can be said for Obsidian too.
Obsidian isn't as big a name as Green Lantern, so DC is fine with ignoring him in favor of Alan.
I suppose but wouldn't one think it would be in better optics to bring forth relevancy to Obsidian. As a superhero who happens to be gay and is the son of the Green Lantern?
It would but DC executives are cynical pieces of shit who don’t want to put in the effort to make actually fan favorite characters popular in the mainstream
What the other anon said, it's easier to rely on an already popular name such as Green Lantern than to try to make his already gay son popular.
Alright, that makes sense. Although it doesn't seem to have brought great success from what I gather. But it does seem that they're just pulling a rabbit out of the hat again and again when it's done. I'm not opposed to characters that happen to be gay, bi, lesbian, etc. It just sucks that we have to settle for scraps or hand me downs in the end. In terms of this run so far the only interesting thing to seemingly come out of it was this recent twist. Which even then was kind of easy to see coming.
>Although it doesn't seem to have brought great success from what I gather.
Well, the main purpose of these gay reveals is to get attention, which works best when the news first break and everyone sees headlines such as
>DC REVEALS GREEN LANTERN IS GAY!
>ROBIN FINALLY COMES OUT AS HOMOSEXUAL!
>SUPERMAN IS GAY AND HAS A BOYFRIEND!
>THE NEW AQUAMAN IS GAY!
These headlines drive usually short-term attention towards DC and their characters, they're intentionally vague so people think about them a lot, instead of just forgetting right away, changing a character's sexuality is always a controversial move but it does get people talking. DC gains a lot of publicity just by being able to say "Green Lantern/Robin/Superman/Aquaman is gay", these are highly popular brand names, and they now get to market them to the LGBTQ public more personally, sure some will complain, but as they say, all publicity is good publicity.
The problem is that usually after the initial reveal passes, so does the initial excitement, those who bought the brand new gay comics aren't guaranteed to buy them forever, and those who hate the change might just not buy any DC books at all, which means DC needs to do something controversial and outrageous again to get everyone's attention, it's kinda like how they killed off characters for attention back in the day, but since comic book death is kinda pointless nowadays, they needed to find something else to trigger the masses.
Hawt.
Did you think we’ll eventually see some Jade/Ruby action?
If there's a will, there's a way.
At this rate DC should simply cater to fujoshi's.
Is that cum on his lip?
It's drool, anon. Don't be so crass.
But it's not going out of his mouth...it's just stuck to his lip.
An artistic error, nothing more.
What fricking planet is this?
Come now, don't you recognize your geography? That's clearly the continent of Ameriafrica.
Wakanda
Myrg?
Blerth
Planet moron
Bizarro World?
It's just so funny there's a Golden Age Soviet Red Lantern, I love it.
Same.
They drew that bulge on purpose. Do they really think people take this seriously?
I don't hate this, what I hate is previously-established straight characters with kids and history of loving their wives/husbands being turned into straight up gay characters and not bissexuals, which would be the obvious and more realistic choice
>They drew those big boobs on purpose. Do they really think people take this seriously?
>turned into straight up gay characters and not bissexuals, which would be the obvious and more realistic choice
It was so odd when Bendis first made that change with Bobby Drake. Even in that very same exchange where Jean ousted him, he even suggested the possibility of being bisexual only for it to be dismissed. Although people will forever see Tim Drake and Jon Kent as gay. At the very least for them, Tim especially. That his romantic interest in women wasn't completely erased. Sure he is stuck with Bernard for the foreseeable future. But it doesn't necessarily mean what was, never meant anything.
Bobby Drake was insulting not only to bisexuals but also to actual gay people
Even if he didn't have a history of dating and loving women, having the character who previously fricked with people's minds on a whim ousting him out of fricking nowhere is such a disrespectful way of handling someone coming out. ANY person ousting someone in the closet like that would be under fire, any respectful writer who didn't just do that shit for brownie points would make this a plot point to show just how narcissistic this behavior was
But nah, Bendis is a fricking hack, so Jean faces no consequences, Bobby's entire romantic history is treated as him being "confused"(which is such a fricking disrespectful shit to bisexuals), and comic fans lapped that shit up because they looooooove this kind of half-assed attempt at diversity
Frick Bendis, frick Big 2 comics and frick the people who eat this shit up
>Jean faces no consequences
That's what really bothered me about that whole development. She faces no consequences for ousting Bobby. Then again telepaths seemingly often get away with their actions, Jean especially. It's such poor writing.
> frick the people who eat this shit up
I think for those that do, they just don't really know any better stories out there. So they'll take whatever the big 2 will toss at them. Such a shame.
>>They drew those big boobs on purpose. Do they really think people take this seriously?
I know you're trying to get a "gotcha" on that Anon but that has been a constant criticism for big tittied chicks in comics for the last fifteen or so years if not longer
>that has been a constant criticism for big tittied chicks in comics for the last fifteen or so years if not longer
But the big 2 does take that criticism seriously, do they not? Not that anon, by the way.
>But the big 2 does take that criticism seriously, do they not?
Yes, about the time of the manara shitflinging fest. But they've backed off of that a little after sales tanked further and some of the editors got fired..
You think the fujios want this?
>Constantine
>Hero.
>You think the fujios want this?
No where near to the same degree as SuperBat. That's to be expected since Alan is a pretty niche character all things considered. But if there's already fanart coming out of the woodwork as seen here
here
and here
I won't be too surprised if it gains more traction. As said before, lovers to enemies is a popular trope, I can see fujos playing up the "toxic love" angle.
Okay, Constantine is an anti hero only at his very best. Though I think those examples still prove a point.
Right, but massive retcons like adding kids, etc. is cool.
I guess because it is seen as more natural for a character to start a family. I myself am alright with lgbt characters and I want them to have good stories. But whenever it comes to characters discovering something about themselves, the execution just feels so haphazard. Sure there is no right way to do it but there have definitely been wrong ways to do it. Iceman being a clear example on how not to do a coming out arc.
>I guess because it is seen as more natural for a character to start a family.
Except in Alan’s case it was literally OH WOW I HAVE TWO ADULT KIDS I DIDN’T KNOW I HAD AND THEN BARELY EVER INTERACTED WITH THEM BECAUSE I’M A DEADBEAT DAD.
Adding older kids to characters is literally always abrupt and forced yet nobody spends years whining how it ruined Wildcat to give him a son he never knew existed. Or that supervillains suddenly have adult/older teen characters with powers when it doesn’t make any sense.
Yet every time someone comes out as x people flip the frick out and can’t stop b***hing about it for ages and act disingenuous buttholes about it, like all the people who suddenly pretend to care about Molly.
Yeah, I get where you're coming from. I think in general when it comes to drastic changes within a character or the structure of those around them. It shouldn't come about abruptly, unfortunately in a story telling medium like comics. It's always bound to happen for the sake of getting attention and readership.
>Yet every time someone comes out as x people flip the frick out and can’t stop b***hing about it for ages and act disingenuous buttholes about it
I don't like it either, it's pretty grating whenever this discourse occurs again and again with different characters. Sure there might be some that are genuinely frustrated by these retcons and want to voice their opinions. But then it's drowned out by these bad actors.
Love sausage.
They know what's up.
Wait a minute.
We don’t know who Ruby’s birth mother is.
We don’t know who the father of Harlequin’s Son.
Both Red Lantern and Harlequinn were villains of Alan Scott in the 1940s.
Could Michael Maybe and Ruby be brother and sister?
>Could Michael Maybe and Ruby be brother and sister?
I guess we'll have to wait and see to find out. But seeing how predictable this twist was, I wouldn't be surprised if that could be the case. It's basically going to be an analogue of Alan's family.
When will they realize nobody takes LGBT heroes seriously?
Not even John Constantine, Apollo, Midnighter, Northstar, Shatterstar, Rictor, etc. etc.
Look at all those characters nobody but reddit takes seriously.
Sure Jan.
So The Red Lanterns have their own version of The Star Heart? Do I have that right? If so, that's not entirely out of the question. The Star Heart is magic, which The Guardians of Oa were tinkering with before they settled on the power batteries, and the original inception of Red Lantern tech was derived from Atrocitus stealing blood magic rituals. So someone tinkering with the same energy source creating another heart isn't that out there. Who made it?
>So The Red Lanterns have their own version of The Star Heart? Do I have that right?
No, it's just a copy of Alan's ring but red because they're communists.
Not that anon but I think his observation did notice a similarity. Although it isn't confirmed to be the Starheart. Isn't the Red Lantern aka Vladimir Sokov's ring powered by the Crimson Flame?
>Isn't the Red Lantern aka Vladimir Sokov's ring powered by the Crimson Flame?
Yes, because it's red.
So it is possible blood magic is tapping into that spectrum
I seriously think it's just because they're communists anon, specially because they mentioned it's will-powered like Alan's, rather than it being a rage thing.
>specially because they mentioned it's will-powered like Alan's, rather than it being a rage thing.
the original yellow ring was also will based
Correct, as you can see, there's a precedent for different colored rings not necessarily following the emotional spectrum, and it makes sense that that is the case with this communist guy.
nice bulge on that man though
I know right? Alan was such a lucky man to have enjoyed Vladimir's company when he did.
