Eh, the franchise isn't outdated, it's just that no one has written a good script for it since Aliens. The special effects in Aliens still look miles better than most of what's come out in the past 20 years.
Not in movies, no, but Alien Isolation was scarier than any movie. Especially in VR. Most players are too chicken shit to even get past the first level that introduces the Alien.
That game was scary for me up until I got the flamethrower. Then the alien just became the occasional annoying nuisance while I walked around and solved puzzles.
just gotta turn up the difficulty so you get less fuel. And those damn facehuggers were still good for jumpscares. And the working joes were quite creepy and resistant to fire at times. That game could be made into a good movie too
