Before TFA was released, there were articles about how JJ Abrams was intent on using practical effects for most scenes. Just PR to get moronic nerds to check it out.
They did use practical effects for a lot. It doesn't really matter though if the overall story is horrendous and offensive.
They covered all those practical effects with CGI in post production (like the Thing prequel). Look at behind the scenes of TFA and the actual film its like night and day.
