Say what you want about Star Wars, but their penchant for as much practical sets/effects/costumes as possible makes them more tokusatsu than capeshit.
One of capeshit's major problem is the constant ripping off the mask/helmet because they need to show muh actors. heroes are iconic because of their masks, not fricking british twink who gets buttfricked.
this looks fricking rad. I like it.
so this is from comics, not tokusatsu? i'm confused.
well what's great is, tokusatsu drew so heavily from cape comics, but they innovated for TV in a way cape comics never did. we have heroes who have to constantly take off their masks to show the star's face, they were like "Cover them in a full fricking helmet, no skin showing, we can use any stuntman we want while the actor is filming other scenes, then churn out episodes twice as fast."
>we have heroes who have to constantly take off their masks to show the star's face, they were like "Cover them in a full fricking helmet, no skin showing, we can use any stuntman we want while the actor is filming other scenes, then churn out episodes twice as fast."
In Mando's case, the stuntmen are basically the actors.

I'm so glad they didn't show Mando without the helmet for too long
TLJ fricked up hard with this
You mean Phasma? They never showed her without the helmet at all, which is actually pretty rare since usually masked characters tend to ditch their masks for contractual likeness obligations.
If only Phasma was actually cool. It's funny how they went the exact opposite direction but managed to still miss the point >People don't care about the actor's stupid face, just have the character look cool while doing cool shit >Okay, keep the helmet on and do frick all got it
Yeah I was actually surprised Phasma wear the helmet all the time despite Gwendolyn Christie being a known name.

Boba Fett tends to ditch his helmet but then again it's understandable given he's not a true Mandalorian. I respected that even Bo Katan wears her helmet until the Armorer told her not to, even though they clearly inserted that line because they need to show Sackhoff's face.
I just find it funny that Phasma was supposed to basically be silver Boba Fett, then they tried again with Din Djarin, who's almost literally silver Boba Fett.
Boba was supposed to kill Cad Bane before the show got cancelled. When the show came back, they scrapped that arc completely and decided to focus on the two sisters instead.
>Say what you want about Star Wars, but their penchant for as much practical sets/effects/costumes as possible makes them more tokusatsu than capeshit.
I'm pretty sure Lucas did say at some point that Darth Vader was partly inspired by Hakaider.
And shit on him all you want, but I'm thankful that JJ Abrams pushed for the ST and Disney Star Wars as a whole to focus on practical stuff. Otherwise Disney Star Wars would be just like MCU aka Prequel 2.0 in terms of effects.
it's used properly to composite different real objects, and/or to scan and replicate real objects. not make them up out of whole cloth because you think you can do better
This, CGI will always be gazillions but MCU's problem is even the costumes are CGI because they haven't finished the design and can do it in post.

Say what you will about the 2012 Dredd movie, it was one of the few movies that had a mandate to never remove its protagonist's head covering and was better for it.
Also props to Star Wars for making sure Asohka and Hera stayed orange and green in live action, instead of say Titans lazy approach with Starfire and Beast Boy, just for the most immediate orange/green comparison.
Gen Xers used to shit on this aesthetic about things looking too "Power Rangers"...which I always thought was frickng dumb because the PLEX designs in sentai look way cooler than most superhero movies.
Most 2000's cape movies aged like shit in terms of designs where as most 2000's toku still looks cool in terms of designs
What heroes do you think would work best with a toku-style show? Obviously some fit the model better than others.
And you don't get points for referencing japanese spiderman.
I thought X-men could be an interesting as a Toku style show. More the original 5 though, since Wolverine throws off the dynamic a bit.
Also the Batfamily.
Green Lantern. He fights aliens with different designs every week, uses over the top CGI energy constructs that don't have to look super realistic because they are space magic, and you have him unlock different upgrade forms over time due to unlocking or adding new abilities to his ring/using his rang to make specialized armor suits for himself.
It only takes a couple of small tweaks to make him a tiny Ultraman.
>It only takes a couple of small tweaks to make him a tiny Ultraman.
I did have an idea for a toku GL thing since before the 2011 movie even, since I learned Ultramana and GL both are inspired by the Lensmen.
how about Darkhawk? He's already got the look, plus he can fire beams from his chest which is a pretty common power in those types of shows. But admittedly, he would likely have too bland of a color scheme to be a popular toku style hero, so that would probably have to be changed a bit

that's why I liked Peacemaker, it felt like the felt perfect combination of tokusatsu's practicalness and CW effects.
so i tried looking up peacemaker and all i'm getting is obviously-made-by-ai/photoshopped pictures of marky mark in a goofy looking helmet
Fat black b***h ruins the whole show.
>so this is from comics, not tokusatsu
Peacemaker

I was talking about Kylo
But this is far from the biggest problem in that movie
Phasma was cool however
If only Phasma was actually cool. It's funny how they went the exact opposite direction but managed to still miss the point

TCW also had Cad Bane with that role
They then actually used Boba Fett and missed the point to an extreme degree
Boba was supposed to kill Cad Bane before the show got cancelled. When the show came back, they scrapped that arc completely and decided to focus on the two sisters instead.

I'm pretty sure the sequels have a ton of CGI, you just do not notice it because the technology evolved a lot since the prequel days.
They do, but there is a huge amount of costumes and puppetry. The Prequels have a lot less CGI than what is commonly assumed.
They still had a lot of misused moments and the undeveloped tech makes it stick out like a sore thumb.
This, CGI will always be gazillions but MCU's problem is even the costumes are CGI because they haven't finished the design and can do it in post.
it's used properly to composite different real objects, and/or to scan and replicate real objects. not make them up out of whole cloth because you think you can do better
The prequels had a surprising amount of practical effects.
Say what you will about the 2012 Dredd movie, it was one of the few movies that had a mandate to never remove its protagonist's head covering and was better for it.
>Say what you will about the 2012 Dredd movie
Dredd 2012 was amazing tho. Practically the complaint was that it has a similar plot to The Raid.
Also props to Star Wars for making sure Asohka and Hera stayed orange and green in live action, instead of say Titans lazy approach with Starfire and Beast Boy, just for the most immediate orange/green comparison.
To be fair, Star Wars has movie level budgets per episode, where as Titans was made as a streaming show for a comic app
They killed him off too fast
Ant-Man rider
Yes, I saw those twitter posts too
>kino
But tokusatsu is shit.
Better than capeshit.
Not really. Same shit, different butthole kinda deal.
I just wish they stopped doing those stupid geometrical abs that the Nolan Bat movies popularized
Blue Beetle was ok when it didn't focus on the wacky family.
When the family is highly involved in the third act I got bored immensely.
read it like a comic
>Trunks son of Trunks
frickin what?
well, she did find mirai trunks cute.
Bejitabros... not like this...
If Blue Beetle had more of this, it would've been a better movie.
>tokusatsu

YOU ARE THE KING

Isn’t that pork ramen or something? Wtf that gotta do with costumes man
They made it political
Christ in Heaven, what's next? Seahorse Stalin? Mollusk Misc Pot? Snow Crab Sadam?
.......imma be right back
The GOD Villain Monsters included Ant Capone, Spider Napoleon, Scorpion Geronimo. Rhinocerous Beetle Lupin, and Ghengis Khan-Condor.
Yup
I really need to finish Kuuga. It was a really fun show.
Gen Xers used to shit on this aesthetic about things looking too "Power Rangers"...which I always thought was frickng dumb because the PLEX designs in sentai look way cooler than most superhero movies.

The MMPR movie adding chest logos to the outfits was a fantastic design choice though.
tokusatsu anons, what are genuinely some of the best/badass costumes you've seen in a series?
What heroes do you think would work best with a toku-style show? Obviously some fit the model better than others.
And you don't get points for referencing japanese spiderman.
Iron Fist and anything street level-ish,

Darkhawk is a good choice.
