being an butthole was already his coping mechanism for being stuck in the circus, but after it 'set in' between episodes that kaufmo was abstracted (it wasn't until the end of last episode that he found out), he's now doubling down on his butthole behaviour and desperate for a bigger-than-usual 'hit' of mischief and mayhem to distract himself with, hence him going full murderhobo and being devastated when it seemed to have been thwarted.

I wanted Jax to be slightly more long term thinking with a series of comeuppance like when zooble's arm chokes him. I'd say the biggest change was him being less forward thinking and getting himself into trouble instantly without a plan. My headcanon of him is more focused on trying to be a villain, wanting people to abstract. Basically think neutral evil vs chaotic evil. Anyone who thinks he actually cares is moronic.

I rewatched both episodes and it’s hilarious how harsh people are about him being an butthole, he clearly has deeper intentions and is pushing for something to happen by pushing everyone’s buttons and keeping them from being sad sacks. He saved them both episodes. Throwing the bowling ball at King and Gang to knock them into the pit when Kaufmo was coming, and bribing the fudge monster with the candy kingdom to get a ride back.
It’s all fake bs that can’t hurt them, so why not goof around and frick shit up to feel something that isn’t despair? Rag’s method of forced positivity and going along with one note corny storylines wouldn’t last to keep them sane, they need conflict and to be riled and livened up by unexpected things.
The real threats are things like abstraction or being trapped, and that’s what he takes seriously.
