Alright I'm just going to come out and say it. Norm Macdonald isn't funny.

Alright I'm just going to come out and say it

Norm Macdonald isn't funny. Yeah i get that you are supposed to snicker at his jokes with a sly twisted mouth because its so intelligent and the audience are being mocked, but that is a cope for having shitty jokes. He was also very up his own ass, he was smug and hid behind a calm personality while he mocked and showed his arrogance to others. Just look at his twitter, he likes to attack people personally and thinks that whatever opinion he has is the correct one because he is so smart. I've seen anons talking about stand up comedy as if it's some huge respectable art form, while they only name the same comedians over and over again. Can you Norm fans stop pretending he is funny and intelligent and see the broken confused man he was. His whole career lasted off a arrogant attitude, he put no effort into anything and got away with it because people fall for his arrogance and sardonic personality. I'm not glad he's dead but I'm so tired of anons pretending he was some genius and falling for the mask he wore.

I have, you're just a moron with no actual hobbies or interests so you don't get that within every hobby there exist people like this who are good to the point that they only really impress other people in that hobby.

I have a lot of hobbies and interests, I am a musician and I don't think that a musician is worth a thing if he only appeals to other musicians. Besides its a dumb thing to say that norm was a comedians comedian when he appeals to mouth breathers on Cinemaphile. I like most of the older comedians that norm liked, i respect his love for dangerfield but everything about norm and his fans is arrogant

            > I am a musician and I don't think that a musician is worth a thing if he only appeals to other musicians
You must be a very poor musician if you can't understand what this term means. It's used as a way to refer to someone who DESERVES more views, but might not get it because people are fricking plebs and want their music in a specific packaging and don't want things that break the mold too much.

It also refers to musicians who create music that is so complex, it can only be appreciated fully by other musicians. A recent example I can think of is Tim Henson. The opening riff alone is so technically complex, it's hard to imagine playing it yourself with all the mute notes and techniques he employs.

As for Norm, he made jokes that were often too smart for the audience. That and being conservative are the only reasons morons hate him.

the point you were trying to make is that some music can only be enjoyed by other musicians who understand complexity, you posted a youtube video with 6 million views. you made a bad example

                Anonymous

It's a perfectly good example of a musician's musician. I can show this song to someone who knows nothing about music like my dad and he will say it "sounds nice". It's a completely different reaction from people who know how to play guitar. Anyone who plays even a bit of guitar is basically in awe of the complexity of the song.

                >The technicality is trivial compared to whether or not the music is good.

And now you understand why the term "musician's musician" exists. It's because of morons like you who can't appreciate technical excellence.

Yeah and Norm had a Netflix show that got millions of views, he hosted the fricking Espies, and was on SNL. Getting attention like that says nothing of his sense of humor just like a few million views on Youtube says nothing of whether some random guy has mainstream appeal in music you blathering moron. What world do you live in where 6 million views is mainstream shit? You sound like a Boomer with no concept of scale on the internet

                Anonymous

no, its just that i mainly listen to stuff with under 500,000 views so 6million is very popular. the noodling on the guitar unironically appeals to smooth brains to go 'woah'

                Anonymous

The difference between 500,000 and 6 million is not huge. Getting low views isn't the point, because anybody of a certain skill is going to get a certain amount of views. There are plenty of comedians who were much less successful than norm and it's because they suck. Someone like Norm stayed afloat because other comedians found him funny. Letterman threw his weight around to get Norm a Netflix show back when that meant something after he went on his podcast. He got all kinds of weird roles in comedic shows because all of the writers saw him as an old great. Whether Norm was a comedian's comedian isn't even really something that can be argued because it's objectively true.

no, not really. If there's a meta joke there, it is on the medium (tv) not the form (comedy). He's taking several minutes of the valuable airtime on tv and telling a long joke which completely subverts what you'd expect to see on the Tonight Show. The joke itself is very funny and he's not mocking the idea of being a comedian or telling jokes
