I genuinely never bought Christopher Reeve as Superman. He wasn't buff enough to be Superman in my child eyes. When Henry Cavill eventually came along he really looked the part, although he couldn't really be toned down in the looks department enough to pass as Clark Kent.

Why would it make sense for Supes to be ripped anyway? You can only build muscle tearing it up with resistance, and he can already lift everything he'll ever need to with no training at all. If Superman really existed he'd have the physique of Montgomery burns.

The suit was fricked. Spandex doesn't show your definition despite what you might assume. They had to try revising the material of the suit and that's the best they could do.
