It was rarely shown, yeah, but the few times it was Kishi made it extremely clear that every other character besides Madara did not come even close to Hashirama. They were both on a different level and the other characters didn't really realize it either. The stories about their fights weren't believed by anyone.
Madara's perfect susanoo in his weakened edo tensei state could slice mountains and hashirama beat a prime version of that + the full power of the 9 tails at the same time and had power to spare to fight for several more hours. That feat should be more than enough to made it clear what I'm saying
