Hacksons mistake to begin with. All of it should have been chainmail, maybe some scale.
And yeah, nuFantasy costumes tend to look cheap and shit.
Tomatoes are fine and whatever, but plate armor is, as far as I remember, not mentioned, and I think think books even mention Gondorians wearing chainmail. It's also better that way because then you have Gondor in plate looking like late middle ages when they have Rohan on their borders that look like early to high middle ages anglo saxons.
You would have to find me a passage in the book then, because I remember searching for this before and I didn't find plate armor, at least in LotR books themselves. Not sure about Hobbit or other works.
Doesn't imrahil have a shiny vambrace, being played armor? I could have sworn he described iron helms. He definitely refers to orcs heavy iron shod feet.
Rohirim are chainmail. They're Saxons on horses, or something along that line. Gondor has proper knights, with 'shiny armour', and helmets. It's safe to assume, that's plate. Not gothic full plate, but plate armour nontheless.
''Knights'' don't have to use plate armor, at certain periods they didn't use it. But it's just weird to have late medieval looking Gondorians (and Uruk hai for that matter) next to 10the century or so anglo saxon Rohan. They should have made Gondorians look like 10th century French.
I don't remember that but I do remember a lot of references to shields and typically people did not use shields when wearing plate because it was just that protective, made more sense to use a two handed weapon to bludgeon other dudes wearing plate to the ground so that you can either ransom them or less commonly kill them by putting your dagger through their visor slot.
>B-BUT THAT'S NOT ACCURATE TO T-
When you're making a product meant for entertainment you need to make choices that reflect that. Plate armor looks fricking nice. You're like the fricking autists that insist the orcs should be speaking their own dialect and unironically whine that they used the word "menu", then we get le heckin authentic orc language with their cgi slop walking around going "VISH NUSH OOGA BOOGISH MALU DING DONG" in the new movies and it sounds fricking goofy because everyone with an IQ over 20 understands just having it in english makes for a better viewing experience.
Not really, you are overreacting. I don't care how orcs speak, but I don't really care for plate armor, especially when they mix up aesthetics of different periods too much to make it kitchen sink.
one autist is crying because NOOO THEY NEED TO LOOK LIKE ANGLO SAXONS or something
the other autist is pointing out his hypocrisies with other aspects of the movies which is quite a common thing when it comes to Tolkiengays.
homie tolkien was a moronic christcuck who legit believed bread turned into the flesh of jesus every weekend. think about how fricking moronic you have to be to believe that. he got on his knees and prayed to an imaginary israeli fairy every day. he didn’t know shit about history and probably thought there was modernity and then just king arthur before that, stretching back infinitely. christians aren’t capable of rational abstraction. and don’t fricking go on about how he taught at oxford, he taught english literature which is just low IQ unfalsifiable bullshit being applied to tedious shitty stories like beowulf from shit smelling cave man made up drunk around a fire. enjoy LOTR for its fantasy and imagination, don’t expect accuracy or common sense. chances are you are smarter than tolkien was and notice shit more
No, you are not more intelligent than an oxford professor at merton college from 1950, you aren’t even as intelligent as one from 1250. Shut the frick up you fedora tipping moron.
I wouldn't blame Amazon for this one. They hired Weta Workshops who did all the prop work for the LoTR trilogy.
The question is what the frick has happened to Weta in the last 20 years.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and blame the incompetent millennial & zoomer women and minorities being churned out by art & design schools now.
Weta has done a lot of great work recently, Blade Runner 2049, Alita, X. But also very mainstream stuff like Avatar. In very big budget productions the art direction takes backseat and funds get misappropriated.
>oh noooo a female costume designer >oh noooo a female set designer
This is one of those instances where the red pill narrative has melted people’s brains. You think it’s somehow straighter to hire a gay man to make dresses for elves than a women
Bro i can count over 60% females on that pic
2-3 really dedicated to their craft? I can dig
Like 15 females working on something? Nah
I'm gonna go with art majors and nepotism no fricking company is run like that
Yes, that’s how most art majors are nowadays. 50%, if not more, are women. It’s different for certain things, but that proves my point even more. VFX is mostly men because it’s way more technical and technological. Costume design is way more female… because it’s hands on and it’s clothes.
Most very famous fashion designers are men because running a business and manufacturing can be very technical as well (and they’re ALL gay) but for just an employee who works in costume design… that’s like 100x more female than the average job in Hollywood.
Go to the credits of 15 films you like and see who did the costumes
Ren faire slag make a better effort with their costumes.
I'm so annoyed that burgers get this shit, and in europe, the very style they are using never does it.
We have gay nerd and weeb cons here now, hopefully ren faires will follow. It's the one burger culture thing I DO want here, swagger around in a Conan loincloth mogging all the dyel nerds and pork some fat tittied hippy slags
there was no authenticity, they clearly didn't give a shit like they did 20 years ago where they would look up actual medieval tailoring and armory to make it look like something that was actually real
it is pretty evident from other things they were more concerned about social issues on twitter than making kino, whether or not their gender or ethnicity influenced this
>the show was bad >therefore everything in it was bad and every nitpick is equally valid because I am MAD
That’s not how it works. You’d be b***hing about the Jackson films in the same way but you liked them so you don’t. Rings of Power was bad because whoever was in charge simply wasn’t inspired by the source material like Jackson was. They were handed an ip by the people who control the funding and they had to write something. That doesn’t mean everything in the show was bad, or none of the people working on it were talented. For the most part the show LOOKED great, it just wasn’t interesting or inspired storytelling. The writing was the problem.
Why would you assume Weta with their incredible track record would be to blame over Amazon? I could understand if Weta did a poor job several times in a row working with different studios, The showrunners have no experience so it seems much more likely that Weta did exactly what was asked, but what they were asked to do wasn't well thought out, probably rushed and underfunded.

I'm not finished with the Silmarillion but it seemed like the hobbit movies ruined more source material while ROP is trying to fill in the blanks. They're both garbage. I do enjoy the first part of the first hobbit movies and it's music. There were a few nice moments in ROP.
ROP isn't even close to Silmarilion. They took a giant dump on the source material. They're throwing a thousand years into one, while changing whole tone of the novel into cringy dark evil fantasy. Numenorians, that are superhumans per Tolkien, on par with High Elves, come out as Storm Troupers.
What's the most nerve wrecking, is that there's a ton of material in Silmarilion, just aching to be told. It's not Hobbit, that's one movie childrens tale, it's massive legendarium, with stories and settings that you can beautifully draw out into a tv series. Take Baleriand, for example, it's vast, packed with factions and territories, and you have a big big baddie up there in the north breading dragons the size of the mountains. But not, they just wanted to do hobbits and a wizard, even though both aren't even mentioned in Silmarilion, a superhuman woman character, and Saruman.
No imagination whatsoever, on top of poor knowledge and understanding of the novel that they were given. One only wonders what these frickers would come up with, if they were allowed to do LOTR characters, like they wanted to, but were not allowed by Christopher.
tbf not entirely a valid criticism as they were not allowed to adapt the Silmarillion
they basically reconstructed a portion of the Silmarillion using only the information given in LOTR and its appendices and original content. It's shit, I'm sure, which I have never actually watched but they were pretty straightforward with what they were allowed to do and it's scope
A lot of modern fantasy has this problem with costumes where they look fake and plastic.
I wonder if it's something conscious or just a product of wanting to save some money.
Problem with metal armor, be it real metal or simply made to look like metal, is that it creates lots of reflections and makes people look like disco balls when standing in normal film lights. Excalibur is one of the few films that uses real metal armor and the result is lots of gleaming armor. The film deliberately leans into this up for stylistic effect, even going so far as to recreate it in things other than the armor itself such as the shiny hilt of Excalibur by deliberately shining lights on it that reflect into the camera. But as a general rule film making is about avoiding these kinds of effects because they're just annoying to deal with because its hard to deal with these kinds of extreme contrasts.
Combat armour didn't look like a gleaming silver mirror, it was fairly dull.
What makes me fume about plate in tv&film is how they just wear fricking shiny plates.
That shit was always under livery so it wasn't just 2000 identical morons swinging hammers at each other, everyone wore brightly-coloured fabric liveries over their plate so you could see who the frick was who and you didn't smash your own baron in the spine by accident
>Combat armour didn't look like a gleaming silver mirror, it was fairly dull.
Yes. Problem is that it only looks dull in real life in real light. Film and tv uses unnaturally strong lights, that also comes in from that comes in from impossible angles. So even if you scuff up the armor you'll still have very reflective round metal surfaces which is a recepie for creating lots of glare.
The right side is armor to wear when you’re on a ship right? You really wouldn’t want heavy plate if you can fall in, and need to move quickly. I thought the set design was one of the better parts of the series honestly. It was trash but not because of that
left is meant to evoke high middle ages, right is meant to evoke Ancient Greek hoplites
It's a shit attempt to tie the two fantasy eras to real historical eras
You guys still don't get the difference between movies and TV do you? These costumes are for 8 years of filming 50 hours of content, not 3 years of filming 15.
unnecessary bait
