manhatten is the "island" (only barely) in between the hudson river on the west and the east "river" (which is just the thinnest gap between long island and the mainland, not an actual river). It is where all the big buildings are.
Brooklynn and Queens are the parts of the city across the east river on long island. The bronx is north of Manhattan on the mainland (seperated by the harlem "river" which again is just a tidal strait, not a river). Staten Island is somewhere south of manhatten and no one cares about it and that's just how they like it. All five sections are their own counties but are all part of new york city. The statue of liberty is in the middle of the water south of manhatten and west of long island. New Jersey is to the west on the other side of the hudson river.

It's not perfect, but nowhere is. I don't get why so many people write articles about how "nyc is doomed!" when it's not.
