I believe that Lucifer ate the fruit of the tree of forbidden knowledge when he was tempting Eve and also developed free will, which is why things have been getting increasingly off script.
Free will exists at creation and is inherent to humans. The forbidden fruit did not grant free will, just knowledge of right and wrong. Even if this is true, God can still force beings with free will to do what He wants so nothing should be "off script."

No, it's more complicated than that. I an attempt to canonise the European pantheon early Christianity turned them all into Angels, divine beings that serve the one true God. He was teasing them with the one thing that apparently separated them from God, knowledge of good and evil. He claimed that God didn't want humans to be like Him and thus told them to avoid that fruit. In their lust for this power they disobeyed God and that knowledge they gained is what prevented them from living in Eden. God was trying to protect them by telling them not to eat it.

Satan didn't rebel just for no reason at all. He had looks, high status and was full of wisdom but still wanted to be worshiped as a God instead of being humbled enough to enjoy his position in heaven.
Satan was just an unthankful prick that let his ego get in the way and he was so butthurt that he wanted to take the human race down with him which he did with Adam and Eve
