ATLA is a textbook high fantasy story, where their planet is totally divorced from ours and all events take place solely within the constructed world
only connection to our world is that their history follows an analogous progression with events mirroring ours

I dunno; I feel like defining high and low fantasy by how connected they are to our world is flawed. As you said, LOTR is technically connected to our world. I'd say that the main difference between the two is just how prevalent magic is to the world. In, say, Game of Thrones, magic affects the world very little. It's there; but aside from a handful of special people who can use it, everyone else lives in an ordinary medieval world. I don't think GoT even has different races. Whereas in ATLA, magic is so commonplace that it's mundane. Every one in four people have magic, at least. And even if they didn't, their world is teeming with magical creatures and spirituality and all sorts of things that defy science. It's an inherently magical world.

Assuming Azula being there means that Aang doesn't get his back cracked, Aang wouldn't have the Avatar State. Imo, the problem is that the Fire Lord essentially gets all the power in the Fire Nation while the other heirs getting nothing. It's why I think Zuko and Mai only had one kid; to prevent any power struggle. It's also one of the main reasons why I wish Azula redeems herself: so she and Zuko can finally put an end to cycle of terrible/abusive sibling relationships in the Royal Family.

With the Japanese at least, they were so cruel when it came to their colonial subjects that almost everyone they ruled would have preferred to remain a "shithole". Modernization is nice, but you can't really enjoy it if your wife is being forced into prostitution while you're being forced to join a kamikaze unit.
It's partially true, in the sense that Japan put in all the basic colonial infrastructure you'd expect from a 19th/early 20th century colony, with some legitimate side benefits. But again, like most colonies, it was mostly meant for resource extraction and settlement by the "mother country". So Korea didn't really see "modernization" until well after the Korean War. IIRC they were a fairly backwards country up until the 1960s and 70s.
It's a bit more complicated than wapanese/wehraboo make it out to be (like any topic; all ideologues have tunnel vision), but there were attempts by both Joseon and Qing to Westernize, but a mixture of imperial politics/corruption and reactionism, especially among the peasantry, lead to slow progress. Japan had a head start, and I am curious as to how things would have played out if Joseon and Qing had also sorted things out when Japan did.
Also, merely adopting Western military or industrial technologies does not equate to real development. Consider that many of the Qing's soldiers thought that their rifles' distance sights were actually power meters which would make their rifles shoot stronger if they put it to the max.
In any case, it would be nice if the conquered nations could be a little more thankful. There's a lot of black legends of course, but perhaps the worst that Japan did was simply attempt to enforce Japanese culture and language, but frankly I'm not too much of one to say that every culture and language should necessarily be preserved even if it might be worth doing so, and really, if the conquered peoples did not wish to adopt Japanese culture than they should not have been conquered by the Japanese.
That's based in a very linear view of "development."

Ty Lee is arguably the most emotionally intelligent person in the show. The advice she gave to Azula about how to get guys to like her is exactly what she did to placate Azula. And everyone thought she was such a vapid airhead that no one suspected she was threat until she chi-blocked Azula (see Mai's reaction). Ty Lee's cheerful, bubbly, airhead personality is the inverted version of Mai's depressed, non-caring, too cool to care personality: a defense mechanism and coping tool to deal with their shitty home lives and toxic/abusive "friend."

Nick fricked with TLOK so hard. It was originally meant as a miniseries, then they renewed for a season 2 midway through season 1's production. Then they renewed for Seasons 3 & 4 mid-way through season 2's production. They moved the show online midway through season 3 in a pre-streaming era and cut the budget of season 4 mid-way through production, forcing Bryke to subsistute Kuvira's origin story (which was later told in Ruins of Empire) for a clip in order to avoid people getting laid off.

for him the fire was more like sorcerer's familiar, taking what ever shape Zuko thought of at the moment (fire whips are another example) while for Azula fire was a weapon, forged by discipline and honed by repetition, that she would unsheathe and use when needed
so at that moment, stunned by the realization that his sister was not there to give him a hand, or welcome him back - but to arrest on false charges - Zuko, essentially stunned and in shellshock, manifests his fire as the first thing that comes to mind when he thinks bout fighting or weapons

Imo, Azula's plan in S&S reads less like a revenge plot or a terrorist plot and more like her trying to cope by proving to herself that her ideology is correct and she is the strongest. Hence her using fire dragger to show Zuko why she is better than him at everything, including sword fighting, and why she learned lighting redirection.

Yang is an acclaimed writer and was a veteran comic book writer when he wrote the ATLA comics. But in an interview, he admitted that everything was run through Bryke and he had to get their approval. Also, it seems like he is a massive Bryke fanboy who thinks they can do no wrong, though that could due to him not wanting to step on their toes in public. Imo, Bryke's problem post-ATLA the show is like that of Lucas post-OT; good worlderbuilders and competent directors/showrunners who are bad/medicore writers who fail to hire people willing to challenge their worst writing impluses and/or fail to enpower them to stand up to them.

if you want to be a bit creative, maybe Aang over corrects in his attempts to bring back spirituality into the world and unleashes a demon sealed in a rock for a thousand years
throughout all of this Azula should have weaved her schemes and plots trying to manipulate Zuko into becoming a Fire Lord he was always meant to be - while Zuko tries to hold onto his well meaning but ultimately naïve idealism
resulting in the siblings meeting half way, with Azula taking her rightful place at her brothers side, acknowledging him, while he admits that he needs her council
and keeping with the theme of the thread, one could also say that Zuko and Azula ending up in one bend not only metaphorically but also literally, would not be out of the question especially if we include Mai's family treason plotline, although it would need a lot of rewriting

They were genuinely just trying to share their prosperity cause they industrialized earlier than the other nations.
I actually watched the series for the first time recently, but there's not been an opportunity to really talk about my thoughts, most of which are about the finale anyway.
Okay, but I'm also enjoying this weird sex AU.
It's very jarring that everyone got a heartfelt moment at the end where they reunited with their loved ones, and we go from Katara and Sokka with their dad, and then Zuko with his Uncle, and then Aang and the inventors, and then it cuts to Toph just standing there and everyone is made super aware that she never actually reconciled with her parents and they probably still hate her. Did they just not have time to dedicate an episode to it? We got an episode dedicated to Aang's insomnia.
Taking a step back; what's the entire point of the series (that being, teaching Aang to bend all four elements) if he's just going to activate the Avatar State in the first ten minutes of the fight and then beat Ozai down that way? It should have been the other way around, where Aang starts in the Avatar State and then Ozai knocks him out of it and he has to rely on everything he's learned since to pull off the win. That's the smart way to do it.
And Aang refusing to kill Ozai feels like an asspull, but I think that's the consensus, but it really makes Aang look like a child throwing a tantrum when he's summoning different Avatars over and over, trying to find one that agrees with him so he can ignore the rest instead of doing the right, logical thing.
And the White Lotus didn't really amount to much either. Sure, they pushed the Fire Nation out of the capital, but it also felt like something that we didn't really need to see happen. It just took up valuable time. You could have removed the whole thing and nothing really changes. They're good as a secret society, don't ruin them by making them non-secret.
That's all the main points. That said, I can see why everyone calls this one of the best animated shows ever, even if I think they play a bit too loose with the bending at times.

TA, Sokka always feels a step behind everyone else simply because he's not a bender and bending is overwhelmingly powerful in a fight. I think there's only one major fight in the whole series that you can claim he undeniably won. For all its flaws, exploring the idea that non-benders are inferior in many regards was an interesting point for Korra to address straight off the boat.
That said, Sokka is never the warrior of the group, as much as he might claim otherwise. He's the guy who comes up with the plans, and most of the time, they work very well. Practically every major plan the Gaang comes up with is Sokka's idea in some way. But he'll also be the joke of a lot of episodes; and his attitude of 'magic doesn't exist, everything has a logical explanation' gets really annoying in a setting where he's travelling around the world on a flying bison with his sister who can control water. Especially when he's been to the Spirit World!

Which makes me remember another point, spoilers below: What was the point of having Appa get stolen if he was just going to free himself a week later and then wind up getting captured by the Dai Li anyway? because she is so good at everything and so strong, there is zero motivation for her to change or to learn from the challenges she has overcome, because there aren't any
there is also no reason for her to change her world view, because it is propped up on the supposition that being a fire nazi is the way to martial enlightenment, and since she is apparently still stronger than Zuko, her ideological basis remains solid - despite the fact that the final of AtLA, with Zuko pulling Luke by first proving that he's stronger and then sacrificing himself to make a point, should have seriously undermined it

Luke during ROJT was never stronger than Vader except when he briefly tapped into the Dark Side. And even then, Vader was conflicted about killing his son and the trace of Padme (as far as he knew). So, just like Luke, Zuko was never stronger than a (sane) Azula, but it was his inner peace and belief in his friends that won the day. Also, Azula does have motivation to change: peace of mind and the ability to have healthy relationships she deep down craves. It is just that her circumstances haven't been conducive to helping her reach that point of seeking atonement.

They won't have Azula do the logical thing because LOK says he led the FN to golden age and had a long, prosperous reign, he is still alive in LOK, and everything Azula does is on his and Aang's hands she is free due to them, and so if she did some henious shit, it would permantely tar their legacies both in and out of universe.

If Zuko was stronger than Azula, then why did Azula get the upper hand on Aang while Zuko and Katara where evenly matched until the Dai Li came? And before you say it, Katara getting the upper hand on Azula can easily be explained by her never encountering a master waterbender or training to encounter one (since they were wiped out or hidden in the North Pole as far as the Fire Nation was concerned). Avatar isn't DBZ where the person with the higher power level wins all the time. Environmental circumstances and knowledge of your opponent matters in ATLA. In fact, imo, if you gave Azula Zuko's memories of his previous encounters with Katara, I am pretty sure she would easily defeat Katara.

as per general iroh, Fire bending mastery comes from the breathe, and the entire point of zuko and aang having to learn firebending from the dragons is that the style of bending azula, ozai and most of fire nation adopted under sozin is a distortion of true fire bending, which is actually about control. fire bending being based on irl martial arts is irrelevant to the actual show cannon for obvious reasons, your insistence on pointless hypotheticals isn't as well thought out as you think >She was actively pyschotic.

Zuko and Aang searched for the Dragons because they wanted a way to bend fire without tapping into anger and rage since that was the only way to firebender as far as they were concerned. Even Sozin-style firebender acknowleges that bending comes from the breath, not the muscles. When Iroh said that much to Zuko during S1, Zuko didn't treat it like that was some hidden information.
Bending is an art, not magic. If Azula was sane, she wouldn't have restored to trying to overpower Zuko and eventually run out of breath.

Fire Warriors where always named the Fire Warriors, it just that during the events of S&S, they pretended to be Kemurikage, which is why they changed their uniforms. Cause the outfit with its billowing cloak and one-eyed mask is not suited for combat. Also, since the Gaang knows about the Fake Kemurikage, Zuko can just tell the general public who they are, making the whole disguise useless.

The out of universe answer is that there is no way a kid's show could show guns. The best in universe answer imo is that ATLA humans are lightning timers, and early guns would be easy to aim dodge, so there was no drive to invent them. Especially when bending is more effect than early IRL guns.

Whereas in ATLA, magic is so commonplace that it's mundane. Every one in four people have magic, at least. And even if they didn't, their world is teeming with magical creatures and spirituality and all sorts of things that defy science. It's an inherently magical world.

Imo, the problem is that the Fire Lord essentially gets all the power in the Fire Nation while the other heirs getting nothing. It's why I think Zuko and Mai only had one kid; to prevent any power struggle. It's also one of the main reasons why I wish Azula redeems herself: so she and Zuko can finally put an end to cycle of terrible/abusive sibling relationships in the Royal Family.

It doesn't, but invaders want to profit from the territory and so the build it up to a certain level (which may be below the home country, but could be above what was there before).
With the Japanese at least, they were so cruel when it came to their colonial subjects that almost everyone they ruled would have preferred to remain a "shithole". Modernization is nice, but you can't really enjoy it if your wife is being forced into prostitution while you're being forced to join a kamikaze unit.
It's partially true, in the sense that Japan put in all the basic colonial infrastructure you'd expect from a 19th/early 20th century colony, with some legitimate side benefits. But again, like most colonies, it was mostly meant for resource extraction and settlement by the "mother country". So Korea didn't really see "modernization" until well after the Korean War. IIRC they were a fairly backwards country up until the 1960s and 70s.
It's a bit more complicated than wapanese/wehraboo make it out to be (like any topic; all ideologues have tunnel vision), but there were attempts by both Joseon and Qing to Westernize, but a mixture of imperial politics/corruption and reactionism, especially among the peasantry, lead to slow progress. Japan had a head start, and I am curious as to how things would have played out if Joseon and Qing had also sorted things out when Japan did.
Also, merely adopting Western military or industrial technologies does not equate to real development. Consider that many of the Qing's soldiers thought that their rifles' distance sights were actually power meters which would make their rifles shoot stronger if they put it to the max.
In any case, it would be nice if the conquered nations could be a little more thankful. There's a lot of black legends of course, but perhaps the worst that Japan did was simply attempt to enforce Japanese culture and language, but frankly I'm not too much of one to say that every culture and language should necessarily be preserved even if it might be worth doing so, and really, if the conquered peoples did not wish to adopt Japanese culture than they should not have been conquered by the Japanese.

Ty Lee is arguably the most emotionally intelligent person in the show. The advice she gave to Azula about how to get guys to like her is exactly what she did to placate Azula. And everyone thought she was such a vapid airhead that no one suspected she was threat until she chi-blocked Azula (see Mai's reaction). Ty Lee's cheerful, bubbly, airhead personality is the inverted version of Mai's depressed, non-caring, too cool to care personality: a defense mechanism and coping tool to deal with their shitty home lives and toxic/abusive "friend."

Imo, Azula's plan in S&S reads less like a revenge plot or a terrorist plot and more like her trying to cope by proving to herself that her ideology is correct and she is the strongest. Hence her using fire dragger to show Zuko why she is better than him at everything, including sword fighting, and why she learned lighting redirection.

Yang is an acclaimed writer and was a veteran comic book writer when he wrote the ATLA comics. But in an interview, he admitted that everything was run through Bryke and he had to get their approval. Also, it seems like he is a massive Bryke fanboy who thinks they can do no wrong, though that could due to him not wanting to step on their toes in public. Imo, Bryke's problem post-ATLA the show is like that of Lucas post-OT; good worlderbuilders and competent directors/showrunners who are bad/medicore writers who fail to hire people willing to challenge their worst writing impluses and/or fail to enpower them to stand up to them.

throughout all of this Azula should have weaved her schemes and plots trying to manipulate Zuko into becoming a Fire Lord he was always meant to be - while Zuko tries to hold onto his well meaning but ultimately naïve idealism
resulting in the siblings meeting half way, with Azula taking her rightful place at her brothers side, acknowledging him, while he admits that he needs her council
and keeping with the theme of the thread, one could also say that Zuko and Azula ending up in one bend not only metaphorically but also literally, would not be out of the question especially if we include Mai's family treason plotline, although it would need a lot of rewriting

Yangchen in Sozin's Comet said that the Avatar can never become enlighted because of their duty to the world. The Avatar's purpose is to maintain balance in both the human and spirit worlds. If not, then how could have past Avatar like Roku and Kyoshi used the state while interving in worldly matters?

Okay, but I'm also enjoying this weird sex AU.
It's very jarring that everyone got a heartfelt moment at the end where they reunited with their loved ones, and we go from Katara and Sokka with their dad, and then Zuko with his Uncle, and then Aang and the inventors, and then it cuts to Toph just standing there and everyone is made super aware that she never actually reconciled with her parents and they probably still hate her. Did they just not have time to dedicate an episode to it? We got an episode dedicated to Aang's insomnia.
Taking a step back; what's the entire point of the series (that being, teaching Aang to bend all four elements) if he's just going to activate the Avatar State in the first ten minutes of the fight and then beat Ozai down that way? It should have been the other way around, where Aang starts in the Avatar State and then Ozai knocks him out of it and he has to rely on everything he's learned since to pull off the win. That's the smart way to do it.
And Aang refusing to kill Ozai feels like an asspull, but I think that's the consensus, but it really makes Aang look like a child throwing a tantrum when he's summoning different Avatars over and over, trying to find one that agrees with him so he can ignore the rest instead of doing the right, logical thing.

TA, Sokka always feels a step behind everyone else simply because he's not a bender and bending is overwhelmingly powerful in a fight. I think there's only one major fight in the whole series that you can claim he undeniably won. For all its flaws, exploring the idea that non-benders are inferior in many regards was an interesting point for Korra to address straight off the boat.
That said, Sokka is never the warrior of the group, as much as he might claim otherwise. He's the guy who comes up with the plans, and most of the time, they work very well. Practically every major plan the Gaang comes up with is Sokka's idea in some way. But he'll also be the joke of a lot of episodes; and his attitude of 'magic doesn't exist, everything has a logical explanation' gets really annoying in a setting where he's travelling around the world on a flying bison with his sister who can control water. Especially when he's been to the Spirit World!

Luke during ROJT was never stronger than Vader except when he briefly tapped into the Dark Side. And even then, Vader was conflicted about killing his son and the trace of Padme (as far as he knew). So, just like Luke, Zuko was never stronger than a (sane) Azula, but it was his inner peace and belief in his friends that won the day. Also, Azula does have motivation to change: peace of mind and the ability to have healthy relationships she deep down craves. It is just that her circumstances haven't been conducive to helping her reach that point of seeking atonement.

Fire Warriors where always named the Fire Warriors, it just that during the events of S&S, they pretended to be Kemurikage, which is why they changed their uniforms. Cause the outfit with its billowing cloak and one-eyed mask is not suited for combat. Also, since the Gaang knows about the Fake Kemurikage, Zuko can just tell the general public who they are, making the whole disguise useless.

Azula was always the better weapon, Zuko was always the better person. Hence why he has the throne, loving friends and family, and peace of mind while she has nothing except for her martial prowess.

ATLA is a story of, among other things, the generational of cycle of violence, and how Iroh and Zuko break it. I think Azula is stronger not because I am an Azula stan, but because her being weaker than Zuko takes away from her failing into the Royal Family's cycle of abuse by becoming a living weapon and budding tyrant, and how it ultimately leads to her downfall. That and how Zuko being strong enough and lucky enough to not fall into it leads to his rise.

Firebending is based on real life martial arts and it is repeatedly said that one needs focus in order to use it to its full potential. if a MMA fighter was having haucllinations and was visible insane before losing a title match, would you say they are normally weaker than their opponent?

It doesn't take away from that in the slightest, becoming a living weapon doesn't mean being the best martial artist, if anything it's a waste of potential.

My opinion is that iroh saying zuko couldn't take her alone, and zuko deciding to do so once she was slipping supports the idea that they were at least basically equal in firebending by the boiling rock/post dragon dance, but azula still had the mental/ruthless edge. once that was gone, zuko beat her while not even moving from his starting position... seriously, go rewatch it and you'll see the two biggest attacks in that fight either forced her to evade or knocked her on her ass. she wasn't sane in that fight but she also wasn't weaker in firebending because of that.

The out of universe answer is that there is no way a kid's show could show guns. The best in universe answer imo is that ATLA humans are lightning timers, and early guns would be easy to aim dodge, so there was no drive to invent them. Especially when bending is more effect than early IRL guns.
