>"Andrew, what are you doing, man?!". >"I'll kill you!"

>"Andrew, what are you doing, man?!"
>"I'll kill you!"
And he just nods and continues like nothing happened. What the FRICK is that? The ending was completely ruined by this crap.

You’re that moronic?? You got filtered by this? The entire fricking film is about him wanting to be the best, Simmons seeing his potential but potential is nothing will NEVER make you the best. He repeatedly says, “earn it Neiman”. Then at the most pivotal, embarrassing, crushing moment hes presented, Neiman transcends his potential and fricking crushed it instead of being crushed by it.

Still doesn't explain why the frick Andrew said that he was going to kill his teacher; an act that was totally out of character for him.

He said "I'll que you", as in he'll let the director know when the rest of the band can join in. Stick to disney movies you fricking moron

First time I saw this I thought the ending was a fever dream after he got hit by the car. And this big finale of him owning his director was a him slowly dying with morphine delusions in a hospital bed

His dad actually has 0 character arc, he's not proud before and he's not proud then, he's just scared for his son and his obsession once he sees how much it's consuming him.
      Why are parents like this?

frick DADS. DADS just mess up their kids life. usually when someone isn't as successful or happy or have as much as they could, the blame could all rightly be placed on the DAD. and its probably only the person's fault so much in that they listened to their DUMB DAD too much

not every character needs an arc, the father exists solely as a constant to measure nieman's character arc against
        >he's not proud before and he's not proud then, he's just scared for his son and his obsession once he sees how much it's consuming him.
that's literally the point. the finale of whiplash isn't a happy ending, andrew has finally committed to casting aside being traditionally happy to be great. his life will most likely be miserable and because of that he will die in his mid 30s due to drug overdose like he says at the dinner scene but in exchange he will get to reach heights nobody else can.
the father's reaction is supposed to signal to the audience that andrew has embraced something that's ultimately twisted and unhealthy.

I'll just say it, the reason I'm so bitter about it is my parents drove me to be so motivated but have never seemed to care about anything I actually achieve.
The diner scene makes me think maybe his family is the same way.
If Nieman is anything like me he wouldn't be happy anyways, that greatness is the only thing he can hope for.

The point is that Andrew takes the reigns and starts dictating the pace of the band instead of lettinf Fletcher tell him what to do, he doesn't give a frick what Fletcher says because as long as they're on stage he won't do shit. It's a moment where Andrew transcends the reality of his life to reach his full potential as a musician, and Fletcher let's him do it because he realizes his petty revenge scheme ultimately gave him what he wanted, someone who could be the next Charlie Parker. What was unclear about that

I will say I sympathized with Andrew the moment he made a passing, jokey remark and everybody looked at him like he just said he fricked a dead body or something, the people at that table were huge c**ts who couldn't even pretend to be interested in his minor accomplishments

        Anonymous

his extended family were definitely condescending c**ts. they absolutely looked down on andrew as less of a man because their kids played sports (even though they were D3 athletes and not even close to the level of accomplishment andrew is at by going to the best music school)

I'll just say it, the reason I'm so bitter about it is my parents drove me to be so motivated but have never seemed to care about anything I actually achieve.
The diner scene makes me think maybe his family is the same way.
If Nieman is anything like me he wouldn't be happy anyways, that greatness is the only thing he can hope for.

his father though I don't think was like that. he was shown to be a caring and supportive father, he even was shown to be extra nurturing after andrew is thrown out of the school, bringing him food and doing his laundry, etc.
his extended family yeah are shitbags as I mentioned above.

so what would happen if every musician on stage decided to have their turn at a "protagonist" moment and just slapped away at their chellos and triangles aimlessly for 15 minutes each like neiman?
