Disconnect all of these scenes and you find the same formula. It's a big action clash, the music swells, the audience gets on the edge of their seat.

There are some good anime, but they are rare. I'm guessing the percentage of good anime films is much higher than good anime shows.
In the 80's and early 90's during the height of Japan's bubble economy, money was being thrown around left and right for anime film production without regard for ROI, so there were a bunch of amazing animated films made for art's sake. After the economic bubble burst, producers expected a ROI, so they want more safe and more merchandisable product, so anime got less creative and got cheaper.

I'm not very familiar with it, but Ghost in the Shell and Paprika were both graeat. I haveb't seen any anine TV show besides Pokemon when I was a kid, and that I mostly liked because I played the games

So I watched it for the first time this year and it's one of the most beautiful things ever made.

Anime was fun up until the mid 90s. Then it became like everything else: corporate bilge in most cases not even made in Japan but outsourced to Korea and the Philippines.

I'd argue that is was fun at least up until 2010 or so. There were still some good shows released in the 00's like Tenjou Tenge, Black Lagoon, Blue Gender etc.
