Nothing at all, top was an asspull the author wrote because too many people were rooting for the villain. Bottom was a blatantly obvious statement, the only surprise being the character admitting it.
You're comparing a pretty decent ending to a television show with one of the most infamously bad endings in all of manga, ever. Now manga and anime often have lackluster endings, but comparing anything to the ending of SnK isn't really fair (plus the show sucks in general).

If Eren admitted his "love" for Mikasa similarly, the ending would've been marginally better but still terrible nonetheless.
