Anime elves are now just a shallow imitation of real elves

Do people really ok with anything as long as they have long ears? Elves are supposed to be graceful, noble, otherworldly, beautiful beyond belief, and have a strong connection to the natural world. Japanese elves are a cheap mimicry made by people who don't understand the true appeal of elves.

    Elves aren't real.
There's no standard that fictional elves have to live up to.
If you're unable to separate different depictions of elves in your mind then think of whatever elves you don't like as not elves but rather some other fantasy race.

There’s a thing called the inevitable passage of time. Most fantasies races that you think are set in stone templates today were a bunch of little gremlin creatures in old folk tales and typically very ugly or outlandish or just a stand in for a ghost story or lesson about how you shouldn’t frick your neighbors wife or the hergenbergerderger will twist your balls.

Santa's helpers aren't even elves at all. They're closer to gnomes. Only in English they're referred to as elves for some reason. Actual elves are described in detail throughout history and Tolkien's elves are the most accurate.

Actually in pre Christian times the elves were exactly like that. They only became treacherous creatures in the Christian era in part to demonise pre Christian folklore.

They told the plebs to stop worshiping their elf spirits, telling them they were evil goblins and hags. Whether true Christians believed in them or not they used the superstition of the masses against them to stop worshiping their ancestors and worship Christ. That is why the elves of later folklore are treacherous, mischievous, murderous etc. But Tolkien was tapping into the pre Christian notion of elves being noble angelic beings.

Tolkien was a devout catholic you moron. And no, you’re wrong about this. The aos sí of the pre christian irish stories are not nice or noble beings, they are unpredictable. King oberon is not a nice being, neither are the satyrs that inhabit his woods. Forests were scary and dangerous, and had to be managed and pruned. Peasants were worried about their pigs being spirited away during pannage and would leave offerings for the fairies so they didn’t frick their livelihoods up, leshy is another good example of this. So what sure some Christian literature was inspired by pagan myth, it doesn’t mean anything I said is untrue, it just shows an example of the true nature of elves as pagans saw them being preserved in the Arthurian tradition, the same with the wizard Merlin.

            Anonymous

What you are saying isn’t how “pagans” saw them, since for one thing paganism is not a universal religion and varies massively from place and time, and for another thing you’re just wrong. Here’s two examples of very old pre christian myth which have cruel fairies:

Tolkien was a devout catholic you moron. And no, you’re wrong about this. The aos sí of the pre christian irish stories are not nice or noble beings, they are unpredictable. King oberon is not a nice being, neither are the satyrs that inhabit his woods. Forests were scary and dangerous, and had to be managed and pruned. Peasants were worried about their pigs being spirited away during pannage and would leave offerings for the fairies so they didn’t frick their livelihoods up, leshy is another good example of this. You are literally talking complete shit

The idea of them being idyllic and maiden like was influenced by the chivalric culture romance was born of. You can’t just call every post christian thing that contradicts you a “pagan survival”. Tolkiens notion of elves comes from romance. Same as his notion of dragons.

What pre Christian Irish stories are you referring to? The pagan Irish weren’t a literate culture before being Christianised.

In literally almost every case you are going to be referring to christian influenced sources, especially in northern europe. Why don’t you give an example of what you’re talking about?

        Anonymous

There’s plenty of pre christian stories where elves are cruel, look at irish folklore. As representations of the forests, which were vast and dangerous, obviously they’re not going to be perfect idyllic maidens (ironically something you are getting from romance literature, which is post christian) but uncanny forces you needed to be careful of and show respect to.

            Anonymous

            Elaborate please.

DnD isn't a setting its a rule system. Here is how elves are defined by DnD rules.

            Dexterity +2
Shorter than humans. Range from 4'6" to 5'8" on average men and women being the same height
females average 110lbs males average 140lbs
Long life, live around 700 years, become adults at 100
They can see in the dark like a cat
They have acute perception and count as trained in perception skill
They have advantage (roll twice take the higher result) on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.

That's it, that's all DnD has to say about elves. Everything else will be determined by the campaign setting, be that forgotten realms, eberron, greyhawk, darksun, dragonlance, mystara, ect ect. Each will have their own history for elves but mechanically the rules set up above will hold true.

Elves have been so muddied down and badly represented in all fantasy that there basically is no proper depiction of what we think they are because every hack fantasy creator just shoe horns in a homosexual OC race with lame and uninteresting lore and archetypes and just slaps the physical image of an Tolkien-esque elf on top and calls it a day.
