Because Harmada and Emmerich are too controlling. They were too controlling on Shazam 2. They were too controlling on The Flash. And they were too controlling on Aquaman 2.

Warner Bros has this obsession with “fixing” the DCEU that don’t need to be fixed and going overboard. Take Shazam 2 for example. While the first movie wasn’t a gangbusters for money, it did have good critic reception. Instead of letting Sandberg do his own thing and build off the good will of the first movie, they interfere and limit what Sandberg can and can’t do (not letting him use Shazam’s villains and forcing him to use OCs). The same is with Aquaman 2. WB thinks they know better than James Wan and as such are constantly overstepping their boundaries and forcing changes.

Harmada can’t because he was fired/quit.

Difference is Gunn is the one in power now and both Emmerich/Hamada are out.

Hamada and Emmerich were forced out.

          https://deadline.com/2022/10/dc-films-boss-walter-hamada-warner-discovery-david-zaslav-1235149111/

The catch as everyone pointed out is that the movies people blamed on Zaslav--Shazam 2, Black Adam, Flash--were primarily done under Hamada and Emmerich's watch. Zaslav deserves blame for certain things but this is still primarily on Hamada and Emmerich

they thought Shazam could have performed better if it had more action, so they decided to make Shazam 2 mostly an hour and a half non stop action sequence without all the character stuff that worked in the first movie.

I always wonder to what extent people are seriously about this shit, like Snyder isn't partially the whole reason why DC movies are in such a shitty state to begin with.

      Anonymous

because instead of making a complete reset they keep investing on what Snyder build.
The problem is what he build only works with this 5 movie idea and not separate ones and even worse only with his dreadful tone.
So you have separate movies that felt disjointed trying to "connect" something that was never there.
It worked with Aquaman , WW and Shazam but after that they just gave carte blanch or everyone to do what they wanted.
Hamada shit plan/Emmerich pettiness , all of that are the result of poor leadership.

Snyder hasn't been involved since 2017 and weirdly the grosses of these movies plummeted immediately after he left with the singular exception of Aquaman. Work BB set to bomb were going on 8 DCEU films with sub-400m grosses.

DCCU is nothing but cope over mid 10's era MCU. And the MCU itself is in bad shape, yet WB thinks it can still "outdo" or "compete with" MCU. It's like the chad who steals your gf is a big disco dancer, so you practice disco moves every night, and then come back when disco is pretty much a dead genre and your gf has moved on from disco stu and even then you still fall on your face trying to dance. What are you even doing at that point but embarrassing yourself? It's clear that movies like Joker work far better than this cinematic universe tripe.

        >underperforming streaming platforms
I don't know where this lie came from. In 2019, before Covid, HBO Max was projected to reach 50 million subscribers by 2024 and by the end of 2022 it had 70 to 73 million subscribers. After the merge Warner-Discovery didn't give concrete numbers but they said they had 95 million streaming subscribers. Discovery+'s last sub count was 10 million so if you take those away that means HBO Max is still ahead of projection with roughly 85 million subscribers. Which means it's retaining the people from the COVID same day stunt. It wasn't a failure. It's performing above expectations.

They're performing well largely because of most subscribers being HBO subs via cable/satellite/Hulu/Prime. In other words, they're getting paid not just by consumers but telecoms and other streamers as well.

        >Why not have a little confidence in James Wan to make another hit, since he delivered such a big one the first time around?
Because of the other shitty WB movies. But we'll see.

We're really going to see Hollywood die, aren't we? Studio after studio feels like it's in a death spiral, and that was BEFORE both the writers and the actors went on strike.

It may take a shot in the nuts, but broadway and paris balet are still around.

That implies that aspiring filmmakers/actors/writers will make as much money as generations before them did in the past. The rock-bottom residuals in streaming, plus the fact that the profit ceiling for streaming has been hit (Netflix saw massive sub growth this quarter and their stock is still falling because they missed revenue targets) has rendered that impossible.

The real money always came from theatrical/TV/home video, and still does....and there's a good chance all three will be gone in the next ten years. Then what?

The biggest problem WBD will face is that these movies and Gunn's reboot will be in such close proximity, that the stench will carry over. They will hang on like stubborn dingleberries, as vexing as a repeating fraction is for a calculator.
WB had an opportunity to close the book on Snyderverse when they let him finish his Justice League. That was the closure his fans needed. Yet they soldiered on with one bloated CGI clusterfrick after another.
I actually liked Gunn's Suicide Squad, and what happened to it was a shame. There's no reason not to think that history will repeat itself. WBD should have cancelled everything and given people a breather, some time to forget this mess.

      >WB had an opportunity to close the book on Snyderverse when they let him finish his Justice League. That was the closure his fans needed. Yet they soldiered on with one bloated CGI clusterfrick after another.

You don't understand, the CGI clusterfricks were already in development prior to the release of the Snydercut, and the people in charge of WB didn't even want to release Zack Snyder's Justice League. They were stubborn about wanting to get rid of most of the Snyderverse and reboot to have a more diverse DCU (but with Supergirl, Batgirl, and Wonder Woman as the new trinity).

The Aquaman 2 Keaton cameo was done when they expected Aquaman 2 to be released following The Flash, which would've had Keaton becoming the DCEU Batman going forward

Then somehow things changed and they decided to have Aquaman 2 take place before Flash and filmed Ben Affleck in the cameo instead

And now they're getting rid of it because of the huge clusterfrick

Snyder is the ultimate boogeyman and scapegoat for these people. This despite the fact that DC was thriving under him and it didn't start to fall apart until after he left.

The MCU was doing better because it had been building for longer. But the DCEU was growing faster than the MCU.

Except the budgets were huge and the movies weren't performing in a way that justified spending so much money (Wonder Woman being an exception since it was way cheaper than the Snydershit). It's why WB got pissed off that Snyder couldn't deliver a billion dollar grosser with more famous characters than the MCU heroes.

Gunn is literally responsible for editing and green-lighting these movies. He admits to it in the fricking Tweet.

        >Hollywood is back!
Is this delusion? Disney and WB are floundering, animation is dead, and movie theaters are running empty shows. The writer’s/actor’s strike will lead to production droughts, a staggering drop in the quality of tv and films, and likely lead to the death the indie scene if successful. Maybe it’s hopeless anyway, no one can write a story anymore.

Snyder is the only man who can write Superman. Because he genuinely understands Superman.

The moment these snakes realize that Gunn can't write him they'll slither away into nothingness and come out pretending they always supported Snyder.

The moment Gunn fired Cavill was the moment everyone realized he's incompetent. Don't watch his movies. Just let them fade into forgotten history where they deserve to be.
