I agree. The changes were very slight to make them work in 3d, but as far as redesigns go, they didn't really take any liberties.
They just don't look appealing. 2d and 3d both have their strengths and weaknesses so converting these characters without much stylization wasn't the best idea. Morticia is the only one that works because she actually looks like a standalone 3d character rather than some approximation of a simpler 2d cartoon.
so your stance is exactly opposite of Antonucci's who was bemoaning that they changed too much. You're saying that they didn't change enough to successfully adapt it to 3d.
Adding to this, the movie designs were trying to immitate the comic designs.
I know, and I still think it's ugly. I do agree that instead of making two movies they could have just funded an original project. It's just that since we're stuck with endless recycling of IP's the least they could do is make the Addams not look like an uncanny, lesser version of the original comics.
The Raul Julia movies made Gomez and Fester brothers but originally Fester was much older and Morticia's uncle, so the nose would be from her side of the family
I think the issue is that they are overly stylized for no real reason. Comic Wednesday had an oval shaped head, but movie Wednesday had a gigantic lightbulb head that is 1/3 of her body. Pugsley's head is also really huge and tall, again about 1/3 of his body while comic Puglsey has a really small head. Morticia is a lot bonier and more skeletal, same with Lurch. Everyone has spindley little stick arms. Mama is just 100% a different character.
The movie crew kind of funhouse mirrored everyone while trying to make the claim that they stuck to the comic designs closely.

Wendsday went form a cute design to a literal fricking bowling pin, Pugsly's egg head does his design no favors, and if you showed the two Morticia designs to anyone and ask which is more pretty the newyorker version would win every time.

it's probably easier/cheaper to animate. These days making tens of millions of dollars in pure profit is considered a flop because rich people are apparently not rich enough, so the order of the day is to cut as many corners as you can and then market the shit out of it.

In 2D absolutely, it is simplified enough to work out. It's just the 3D stuff that is jarring and unnecessary

I think it's just that studio and what they're doing with the stick-figure limbs, based on my limited understanding of 3d rigging and animation, is creating something that has so little detail and surface area that it doesn't need any high-skill, high-effort rig setup with constraints and such. That was they can quickly shit out these movies with far less effort. It's probably why most characters have stiff clothing that perfectly meshes to their bodies, so they don't have to simulate any folds or wrinkles.
So they suck at what they do, but they're paid way less to do it. Probably so the studio can hold onto the rights.
>Big Jim Miller, the head storyboard artist for many of the episodes, thinks that Marie is the cutest girl out of every female character. According to Animation by Mistake, he explains that "she has a completely sultry half-lidded smirk." He punctuated this by purring.
I like how they people behind this show don't give a shit that she's underage or a rapist
antonucci is the luckiest fricking animator alive. He hit the game at precisely the right time, got a bidding war, and made off like a bandit with an impossible deal that has never been seen since nor will it be. Studios discovered how much they fricked up when they when they realized they couldn't milk EEnE to death so that will NEVER happen again. Notice he also hasn't done dick since then.
He won the very last lottery before all the winning tickets were pulled. He can coast off of for the rest of his life and he thinks realistic advice is telling people to not work jobs they don't 100% agree with and to play the (now rigged) lottery instead. Dude is lucky and he had a good break, but he can take his advice and get fricked. Nobody, including himself, can do what he did again.

You could always get work doing other shit between gigs if you actually had a spine and skills.
He definitely had the best time working right in the middle of the golden age of creator driven shows. He got a series just a couple years after it started and ended his series a couple years before it all fell apart.
In the current era of IP hell and everything only ever being allowed to be an existing IP, a remake of some 1980s thing, or an extension or spinoff of a show that has been on for the last 20 years, I don't know if we are ever going to get another situation of Oh Yeah Cartoons, and Cartoon Cartoons spawning series after series is not likely to come back anytime soon.
It was really just Disney doing it for the most part. Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon mostly checked out from creator driven stuff around 2012ish. Nick was cool with Spongebob forever and only ever really greenlit other things that were wacky Spongebob-lite but never let any of it go past 3 episodes. Cartoon Network decided on Teen Titans Go forever and only had their other stuff on for a week or two, three times a year. Even popular stuff like Adventure Time was only one for one week at a time, every 6 months when new episodes were made after 2013.
Disney however just decided to consistently make shows consisting of some 14 year old girl creator self insert go on a magical isekai adventure and eventually get super saiyan powers in the third act.
was it true that he/CN/AS turned down the KevinL dude for the eene bro show prequel idea? or was it never on the table to begin with? I know of the deviantards from this board ape out about eene to this day but im just pitching in because he seems like he doesn't wanna make any slop or continue his magnum opus in the modern day which is as based as he seems but obviously does interact with the mentioned die hard fanboys still >WTF I look up to Danny Antonucci now
While I think the designs are somewhat faithful, I'm 100% behind his logic here. I can't find the interview, but I remember someone at Capcom saying the reason there was such a huge gap between Mega Man 10 and 11 wasn't because they weren't interested in the series, but because everyone they asked about directing a new game turned them down out of respect for the series' legacy.
If more creators were willing to just tell these studios no, we wouldn't have as many crappy remakes/sequels/reboots/whatever as we have now
This is the way every single show should go. Have creators say "yeah there are gay there but they won't just start acting like homosexuals just so you can validate your shitty lifestyle". That ends any debate not impulsed by bitterness.
>Van Partible (before he got re-hired) >David Feiss >John Dilworth >Maxwell Atoms >Mr. Warburton
Why are there so many old CN creators that got screwed over by the network? Only Genndy, Craig and Mo Willems (who is now a highly successful author) came on top.
His projects for HBO Max, which were adaptations of his bestselling books, got very low viewership and removed during the tax writeoffs. Which just emphasizes how TV is a very hard medium to find success,
They didn't work out but it's almost incidental at this point. He's still a very successful children's author, gets artist-in-residence gigs and has had multiple successful shows.
So insane that Mo Willems made out better than most old school CN allumni considering how much of a flop Sheep in the Big City was
Sheep flopped becuase it got fricked over. Its ratings were initially fine but then for whatever reason it was pulled for months, then put on Sundays at 9 PM, then pulled again and cancelled, then uncancelled, then kept in the same shitty timeslot where they'd just randomly not air the show for whatever reason. Same way other shows like Robot Jones, Time Squad, and the like got fricked over.
Sucks too.
Sheep could have been their own SpongeBob, especially in terms of humor and the fact that Mo had better success as a children’s author.
But hey, I guess the PPG was already good enough for them.
Simply put, their shows weren't good enough. The success Craig had with PPG and Foster's, and the success Genndy had with Dexter's and Jack were on another level. They singlehandedly put the channel on the map
>Grim Adventures: August 24, 2001 to November 9, 2007, 82 episodes,162 segments,1 special and 1 direct to video movie >Ed,Edd n Eddy:January 4, 1999 to November 8, 2009,130 segments and 1 tv movie
Less episodes than both. Also Antonucci didn't get screwed over, he ended the show on his own terms with the movie since he didn't want to do a season 6.
KND and what? Dexter and PPG had the Savino seasons, Ed Edd n Eddy had the school seasons and Grim Adventures declined hard in the later seasons, where it started focusing on booger, fart, shit, gags, characters screaming constantly, and meme humor (Fred Fredburger, the word "yo momma" repeated over and over again, etc.). Compare it to the "Grim and Evil" era and it's a completely different show.

>anti eenegays have to pretend like season 5 was bad even though it was just a bit worse than the rest of the show
No. Your shows became a travesty of themselves in their alter seasons, while my show only went from excellent to great. Not to mention that its movie blows most animated works out of the water.
I know Grim Adventures remained consistently good, but what's the other one?
Definitely not Dexter's Lab and PPG, so it's either Ed Edd n Eddy or KND. Thing is, both their last seasons dipped in quality, but not that bad.
I, for one, am glad to live in a world where Ed, Edd n Eddy didn't get a shitty 2016 reboot, a failed attempt at a live-action reboot and yet another reboot that the creator is forced to do because he doesn't have enough clout to do his own thing like his pal Genndy.

I don't know, they seem to never ever let Spongebob or Fairly Odd Parents go. and they are always willing to make more Powerpuff Girls
It seems more like no one in charge of a broadcast channel in the US gives a flying frick about their channel or their job. They are fine not paying attention and slapping the same ten episodes of the same two shows 24/7 and getting back to not giving a frick. They have not cared to attract viewers or make their brand worth a damn in more than a decade now. No one in charge of a cable network has any care to make their channel worth watching and just sort of turned it into white noise around 2013-2014.

It will contain shows such as Courage the Cowardly Dog, Ed, Edd n Eddy, Dexter's Laboratory, and The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy.
They were the first actual new shows on what was before just an old rerun channel. But they did help launch the era of creator driven shows in the late 90s to early 2010s.
Sucks that time is over except for maybe one or two shows on Disney at best. Cartoon Network and Nicktoons used to be the main vehicle for creator pitched cartoons, but those are fricking gone in favor of old, typically 80s era IPs
How did they get screwed over? They were allowed to make cartoons with tons of creative freedom on CN's dime, until CN decided to put their money elsewhere. That's not screwing them over, that's just business
They all got canned for different reasons. Courage the Cowardly Dog got cancelled because they couldn't sell merchandise, as pink dogs doesn't sell in a boy dominated marketplace.
John Dilworth regrets making Courage pink because of this.
There was a lot of that kind of thing going on for years. The 80s had tons of girls cartoon series being made but that largely fizzled out when loads of people did not want to work on them since making a girly show might mean they are gay, execs having something like that in their studio means they might be gay, etc.
That was done 2 or 3 times. They overhauled the network, cancelled most of the old content and started up a new generation of content. Remember when the channel was all Billy & Mandy/Cap Lazlo/My Gym Partner is a Monkey? Then Flapjack/Chowder, then Adventure Time/Regular Show?
>Only Genndy, Craig and Mo Willems (who is now a highly successful author) came on top.
Pretty sure these guys got fricked over too (which is why they left CN in the 2000s in the first place) but managed to get over it.
Floated around here and there being a story(board) artist for many movies like Rango, Penguins of Madagasca, and all the Hotel Transylvania movies except for the first one.
Not really, that is incredibly common in the animation world to rise up and be a showrunner or director for a while. Then after that job ends they go off to be a storyboarder on someone else's show afterward. Very rarely does someone get to be a showrunner twice. Director of a few random episodes maybe, but they do often just become a storyboarder, character designer, or layout artist after that.
Kyle Carozza immediately after Magiswords ended was just a typical episodic storyboarder on animaniacs.
He was the character designer for Open Season. Probably a storyboarder and co-producer too. You can see it in the character's faces, though obviously it would be more charming in 2D.
>was the most popular of the middle segments CN had back in the day >had a segment in each Cow and Chicken episode, bringing it up to 52 shorts >CN wanted to make an entire show of it in 1999 >however according to David Feiss, new executives had just entered the building and was about to open Cartoon Network Studios in 2000, where shows like Samurai Jack and Time Squad would be made >Hanna-Barbera Productions, who made Weasel would be dismantled and merged with CN Studios and WB Animation >because of this Weasel got only one season of 9 half-hours (27 segments). CN dubs this (Season 5) but that's not really the true since Season 1-4 are Cow and Chicken shorts. >despite all this, it was still the fifth highest rated show of 2000, but didn't continue production over at CN Studios like Dexter's Lab and Powerpuff Girls did
Poor Feiss. I know Cinemaphile hates his shows, but he really for the short end of the stick.
This same kind of thing happens a lot. Maomao was a victim of coming out right at the time of the Warner/AT&T merger and rebranding all things turner animation into WB Family. This also ruined a lot of animated series that were supposed to go up on TBS.
working on a series for two or so years only to have it fricked over because the release date just so happens to be right next to a huge corporate rebranding/merger/buyout event is always a fricking nightmare and usually kills whatever project a crew was working on for years.
I'm still fricking livid over what happened to Mao Mao. Summer Camp Island gets five goddamn seasons but that show can't even get a second after announcing one?
Summer Camp Island wowed a whole lot more people by going through film festivals for a couple years before it was made into a series. Loads of important people knew what it was and liked it. Maomao was just another Cartoon Network show that came and went.
I don't know why people shit on Cow and Chicken. Like yeah, its easy to dismiss as a Ren and Stimpy ripoff but its easily the best of the Ren and Stimpy ripoffs and in some respects it was even better then actual Ren and Stimpy.
Why so many Americans claim that Johnny was black? is it cope over the fact that the show didn't had any black characters?
Most late 90s Cartoon Network show didn't had any black recurring characters so if you need to cope you an always say that one of the adults from the school seasons was black since we never actually saw them
I think he may be mixed but he's a loner outcast and is marginally above the Eds in the social totem pole so like, I don't think it really helps either way.
I always doubted he was black when you look at how he acted and talked. What black kid has hippy parents and wears open-toed shoes? However, I know a few white kids growing up similar, if not identical, to Johnny, baggy shirt, buzzed, everything.
I guess because the show did not have any black kids at all? Which is kind of weird, especially for early 00s era stuff that was way more multicultural than anything made now where it is overly emphasized in everything as much as possible. Half the shows made in 2000-2002 always had the black friend, random ambiguously brown kid, a Mexican kid with an accent, and an asian girl.
Sort of like how early 90s shows always required black sporty guy, asian girl, and wheelchair kid.
I remember that episode where Johnny got poofy curly hair. Seems more of a black thing tbh (maybe a israelitefro too). But only Antonucci can provide the answers on whether or not he's mixed.
In an industry where everyone kisses ass because they don't want to make waves, Antonucci stands above the rest. Maxwell Atoms and Carl Greenblatt are close though.
Antonucci was never beholden to the calarts cult
Him and John K actually worked for HB at the same time for a short while in the late 70s/early 80s. Canadian animators were just cut from a different cloth back then
Antonucci at least finished his one show, I'll give him that. John K is such a fricking hack that he got booted from his own show after barely a season, yet he crowned himself king of animation and morons believed him.
John K is just a series of problems. Professionally he is a shitty employee that always turns work in late and goes over budget. Privately he is a creepy fricking rage-prone weirdo that no one wants to be in a room with. He's just a bad at doing what he does.
I guess on a technical level, yes he is indeed a great animator who is really good at putting together a walk cycle or a reaction shot, he is damn good at keyframes. But he sucks at every other skill involved in the process including being a reasonable fricking human that people can put up with. So he is a great keyframer who is really good at keyframes, but sucks at budget, timing, running a crew, directing, maintaining morale, just everything. If the man stuck to just being a keyframer working for others forever, it would work.
outside of guy, who actually respects him?
I don't know if many do now, but he was fricking huge in the 90s, mostly by edgy people who loved how John K put adult stuff and edgy dark shit into his shows all the time. No one cared how he was as a person or even gave a shit about his technical level of skill or knowledge, they just fricking loved him because he put fart jokes, fat jokes, and had Ren saying crap a lot. That was really cool in 1992 because dark comedy in a kids show on nickelodeon was a novel and new thing, the rebellious different thing that pissed off parents and moral leaders a whole lot. Which is why they joined in with his b***hing about Animaniacs, it was the same and sterile show full of family friendly kiddy shit while Ren and Stimpy were for REAL adults who FRICK! ..but really no one gave a flying frick about his rants about technical skill at all ever. He was always pissing into the wind with that one.
I imagine the people who really love him now are the same people who loved him back in1995.

I dunno, isn't John K the one who started using "CalArts" as a term to describe some stylistic choices?

The school guarantees employment
Their alumni infiltrate all the studios they can and actively try to only hire other grads from their school
Speaking against their practices or stylistic memes can get you alienated to the point where you won't be able to get work outside of advertising
It's a full blown cult

you understand that the school doesn't "teach" a style, right? Students learn anatomy, principles of animation, work pipelines, movement, color theory, history, acting (for animators)...but it's not like there are classes on drawing "bean mouth".
The look is a trend. It comes from chibi anime, and aside from looking "cute" so it appeals to children, it's likely popular because it's easy to replicate and quick to draw which saves studios tons of money.

>Students learn anatomy, principles of animation, work pipelines, movement, color theory, history, acting (for animators)...
Sure could have fooled us...
The irony of an anon on Cinemaphile complaining about any of this is palpable. Yes please tell us about your high horse after jerking it to teens on /s/ and posting "no pussy no work" on /misc/.
He exposes the industry. For instance, he confirmed that the reason Fish Hooks was terrible despite immense talent, was due to executive meddling at Disney with their many rules.
He was going to make a show called Lupo the Butcher based on a short he did as a student. Then the network wanted to tame down the violence so he said "frick no" and walked.
I give him credit for sticking to his guns (and yes, that would have totally neutered the show so it was a good call) but he's also already has a name and made his mark. A lot harder to walk away from a network willing to fund your project when you're young and hungry.
>nobody in the industry want to work with him anymore
you have it backwards.
he doesn't want to work with the industry anymore. he doesn't need too, he's above it.
So, how are you guys liking the slow death of animation?
I'm honestly just surprised that it wasn't directly caused by twitter infiltrators like the she-ra b***h and Sugar
You should see the existential crisis Charlie Gavin is currently having over the fact that all production dried up in anticipation of the strikes way back in January and there is just no work for anyone anywhere.

The weird thing you guys seem to not realize is that this shit has been feeding the whole consistently using the same design style bullshit of the last 6 years.
There was a poster of Mr Meeseeks looking forward in a studio I was in back in 2019 that had the caption >This scares the incel
with everyone fricking loving how bean mouth and round teeth triggered the evil incel hordes so much that everyone in the room used to draw various characters with it over and over again, loads of it was posted on twitter at the time. And it sort of turned into a whole thing where you either drew everyone with noodle arms and round teeth, or you might be implicated as one of the evil bigots that complain a lot. A lot of people were brow beat into joining in or were scared to not join in (because all future jobs are based on being friends with everyone and being a part of the in-group) Then that slowly evolved into just plain everyone drawing the one style for all projects, and now we have Pixar films being made in the same style. Because it triggers the evil Cinemaphile bigots and that's GREAT, we need to do more of that!
It was a Lion-O printout and it was on the bathroom door until at least 2021.
Otherwise yes, it was internet lashing back that caused the industry to triple and quadruple down on it so hard because not loving all things bean design was looked upon as being an angry racist Trump fan in some circles. So everyone joined in and tried to become the paragon of all things bean design so no one would ever point a finger at them.
>how are you guys liking the slow death of animation?
more like the slow death of cable TV, and I welcome it
there's better shit online/streaming anyways
I've made my peace with it. A good show comes out once in a while by accident so it's nice to know i can comfortably ignore 95% of what comes out and be pleasantly surprised to find a show i like. Either it dies completely and i can stop caring or it'll dig itself out of the hole after it finishes the current cycle of burning itself down.
>I'm honestly just surprised that it wasn't directly caused by twitter infiltrators like the she-ra b***h and Sugar
In what world would this have ever been the case? Also it's mostly TV animation, animation as a hobby, feature length animation in general and smaller scale projects will always exist and get eyes. One avenue of opportunity closes, but others will always be open for those who want it. I'm just popping off at the inevitable corpo folding.
He can be based sometimes

Adding to this, the movie designs were trying to immitate the comic designs.
They're like a funkopop exaggerated version of the comic designs.
The movie lost what made the originals grotesquely cute, number one example Wednesday, but then Ricci redefined her so they kinda had to
>give puggsley a pig nose like gomez instead of a drop nose like fester
>removing the implication puggsley is fester and morticias kid
The Raul Julia movies made Gomez and Fester brothers but originally Fester was much older and Morticia's uncle, so the nose would be from her side of the family
I think the issue is that they are overly stylized for no real reason. Comic Wednesday had an oval shaped head, but movie Wednesday had a gigantic lightbulb head that is 1/3 of her body. Morticia is less attractive but has more character. Original is just "hot lady but grumpy".
Original Wednesday looks way too friendly and innocent. I don't like the new design much but I understand why they changed it.
Puggsly is the only that looks like they changed him just for the hell of it. If they were all like that I could understand flipping out.

Probably so the studio can hold onto the rights.
he's based all the time
>Big Jim Miller, the head storyboard artist for many of the episodes, thinks that Marie is the cutest girl out of every female character. According to Animation by Mistake, he explains that "she has a completely sultry half-lidded smirk." He punctuated this by purring.
I like how they people behind this show don't give a shit that she's underage or a rapist
Big Jim, huh?
He drew this? Or it’s just a repost or something?
Yes, anon, of course he drew that, his username is "JayMarvel" now

i just wanna frickin read the comments
The blonde was always kinda cute just more dopey-looking than blue
All three of them are cute. They're supposed to be. It's how they act that's off-putting.
as a kid, i preferred the blonde one. her goofiness was endearing
Holy shit, it’s real. I assumed someone photoshopped this. Dude does not give a frick lol
I kneel.
FRICKING BAAAAAAAAAAAAASED
antonucci is the luckiest fricking animator alive.
What was the deal?
He retained ownership of Ed Edd and Eddy. Cartoon Network can't do anything with it without his approval.
…wonder if he had any say in those checkered past bumps
They're his characters, not the network's, so yep. I'm sure he had fun being a part of this as well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIw_bFP1YVA
Full rights of his own property, merch included.
>Need to endure Adul Swim creators seething at your show
>Him and his other coworker need to endure Ouweleen moroneness

Yeah, he was lucky
when did adult swim creators do that?
>WAAAAAH MY LIFE IS HARD I *HAVE* TO EAT SHIT AND BE A CORPO FRICK
Well, you can blame the last decade's amazing batch of creator driven cartoons for that.
We won't ever have that again. They have all the incentive to endlessly reboot the show/properties of the past.
Holy fricking autism
was he saying the 90s toon and movies were bad? I dont get it
was it true that he/CN/AS turned down the KevinL dude for the eene bro show prequel idea? or was it never on the table to begin with? I know of the deviantards from this board ape out about eene to this day but im just pitching in because he seems like he doesn't wanna make any slop or continue his magnum opus in the modern day which is as based as he seems but obviously does interact with the mentioned die hard fanboys still
>WTF I look up to Danny Antonucci now
old hoax meme i lold
Holy FRICKING based
He's right
I thought they do it because the director says to make them in this style and they want to continue being employed.
I thought the designs were fairly close to the Charles Addams original ones?
They're very exaggerated in the animated movies. Big eyes, heads and bodies, stick like necks and limbs
If more creators were willing to just tell these studios no, we wouldn't have as many crappy remakes/sequels/reboots/whatever as we have now
You mean at all times
>I haven't worked in over a decade and it's your fault.
He doesn’t like Sam Register, does he?
Thought this response was cool
This should be able to unironically please both sides.
Why should they, when one side doesn't care as long as they can see two cartoons of the same gender kissing?
It won't because twitter warriors want them to stick out like a sore thumb, they see the LGBT as exotic zoo animals.
Thats pretty funny.
Brutal
This is the way every single show should go. Have creators say "yeah there are gay there but they won't just start acting like homosexuals just so you can validate your shitty lifestyle". That ends any debate not impulsed by bitterness.
Thanks Max!

Why are there so many old CN creators that got screwed over by the network? Only Genndy, Craig and Mo Willems (who is now a highly successful author) came on top.
So insane that Mo Willems made out better than most old school CN allumni considering how much of a flop Sheep in the Big City was
CN missed out, Sheep in the Big City was great
A true unsung great.
But hey, I guess the PPG was already good enough for them.
feiss boards for sony/illumination movies these days, i'm sure that's a decent living
Simply put, their shows weren't good enough. The success Craig had with PPG and Foster's, and the success Genndy had with Dexter's and Jack were on another level. They singlehandedly put the channel on the map
>Grim Adventures: August 24, 2001 to November 9, 2007, 82 episodes,162 segments,1 special and 1 direct to video movie
>Ed,Edd n Eddy:January 4, 1999 to November 8, 2009,130 segments and 1 tv movie
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/i_S4QDuyxJI
Less episodes than both. Also Antonucci didn't get screwed over, he ended the show on his own terms with the movie since he didn't want to do a season 6.
Kys Edgay
Only two shows on that list aren't known for having terrible later seasons.
Oh no, buddy.
Finn is so cute
Gay pedophile. One and the same I guess but still.
I, for one, am glad to live in a world where Ed, Edd n Eddy didn't get a shitty 2016 reboot, a failed attempt at a live-action reboot and yet another reboot that the creator is forced to do because he doesn't have enough clout to do his own thing like his pal Genndy.
But maybe that's just me.
Zoomies get the rope.
What kind of pride flag is that blue+yellow one? Bugchasers? Everyone I see using it is an annoying homosexual.
>What kind of pride flag is that blue+yellow one?
I know you're memeing but the fact that most burgers wont know it is hilarious.
To be honest, those designs look better than what would be in an actual reboot
zoomer here.
Ed Edd n Eddy was pretty cool
>expecting morons on Cinemaphile to know that some of gen z grew up with EEE

>Checkered Past is an upcoming programming block on Adult Swim featuring Cartoon Network cartoons from the 1990s and early 2000s that is scheduled to premiere on August 28, 2023 starting at 5:00 p.m. EDT, running weekday evenings. It will contain shows such as Courage the Cowardly Dog, Ed, Edd n Eddy, Dexter's Laboratory, and The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy.
It still bemuses me that AS is more willing to show pre-2010 CN cartoons more than CN itself.
>It still bemuses me that AS is more willing to show pre-2010 CN cartoons more than CN itself.
I find really odd how AmericanCN acts like if Steven universe (Gordo Mamon) is the oldest cartoon that hey can show meanwhile Latin America/Mexico/Brasil CN shows all the cartoons even the probematic ones with the snow flakes like Jhonny bravo, Why american Cartoon Network is too ashamed or want to bury their past?
Imo American execs are obsessed with the idea that kids won’t like anything “old.”
So are there gonna be generals for that too?
I've been conditioned to hear that fricking macbook voice and instantly associate it with OK Computer.
Fitter. Happier. More productive.
Souless
I thought he was purple
>as pink dogs doesn't sell in a boy dominated marketplace.
This sounds moronic. I demand proof.
New heads of the company wanting to go a new direction.
They got rid of all of their veteran talent for CN Real.
Oh yeah and the Boston Bombing too.
Cartoon Network shows never got the same level of prestige as most cartoons
>Only Genndy, Craig and Mo Willems (who is now a highly successful author) came on top.
Pretty sure these guys got fricked over too (which is why they left CN in the 2000s in the first place) but managed to get over it.
I wouldn't say Craig or Genndy got fricked. If anything they overstayed their welcome and didn't give enough new talent the same chances they got
Willems got fricked though. He's successful now in spite of CN, not because of it
Unironocally adult swim fault
What did Feiss do after getting booted from CN?
Floated around here and there being a story(board) artist for many movies like Rango, Penguins of Madagasca, and all the Hotel Transylvania movies except for the first one.
Boy, that must have been a little awkward to work for your former contemporary
Not really, that is incredibly common in the animation world to rise up and be a showrunner or director for a while. Then after that job ends they go off to be a storyboarder on someone else's show afterward. Very rarely does someone get to be a showrunner twice. Director of a few random episodes maybe, but they do often just become a storyboarder, character designer, or layout artist after that.
Kyle Carozza immediately after Magiswords ended was just a typical episodic storyboarder on animaniacs.
Worked at SPA particularly the Open Season movies.
Can someone circle the showrunners/creators
He was the character designer for Open Season. Probably a storyboarder and co-producer too. You can see it in the character's faces, though obviously it would be more charming in 2D.
>was the most popular of the middle segments CN had back in the day
>had a segment in each Cow and Chicken episode, bringing it up to 52 shorts
>CN wanted to make an entire show of it in 1999
>however according to David Feiss, new executives had just entered the building and was about to open Cartoon Network Studios in 2000, where shows like Samurai Jack and Time Squad would be made
>Hanna-Barbera Productions, who made Weasel would be dismantled and merged with CN Studios and WB Animation
>because of this Weasel got only one season of 9 half-hours (27 segments).
I always liked I Am Weasel. Cow and Chicken was garbage though.
Forget that, it's the disgusting, dirty logo that sums up WB well
Stop being anti semitic
Quiet you
I always knew Antonucci was cool, but damn.
I'm willing to mostly forgive him for the Brothers Grunt now.
Frick you the Brothers Grunt was based.
EEE was mid and the school episodes dogshit
its no wonder why his other garbage failed so hard
Cartoon Sushi? lol lmao even
The more I learn about Danny, the more I want to be exactly like him.
Johnny always looked like a younger modern Elmer Fudd to me.
Seems mixed black and white to me.
He dresses up as a watermelon-themed superhero.
That would be like saying that Rolf is black because he has the same skin tone as Johnny
He's obviously somewhere from Eastern Europe so him being black seems unlikely.
I always saw him as being from somewhere in the middle east.
same. i also thought maybe he was a mix of pajeet, arab and something like welsh or the netherlands
Sicilian?
>Why so
Yes gay
I guess because the show did not have any black kids at all? Which is kind of weird, especially for early 00s era stuff that was way more multicultural than anything made now where it is overly emphasized in everything as much as possible. Half the shows made in 2000-2002 always had the black friend, random ambiguously brown kid, a Mexican kid with an accent, and an asian girl.
Sort of like how early 90s shows always required black sporty guy, asian girl, and wheelchair kid.
i thought he was some type of spanish
I remember that episode where Johnny got poofy curly hair. Seems more of a black thing tbh (maybe a israelitefro too). But only Antonucci can provide the answers on whether or not he's mixed.
Can anyone reach out to Danny personally for him to answer if Jonny is black or mixed?
>Is that...AN OLD SIGN?! OMG MY CHILDHOOD IS DEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD
Cinemaphileners are a joke
Enjoy your stay twittergay
In an industry where everyone kisses ass because they don't want to make waves, Antonucci stands above the rest. Maxwell Atoms and Carl Greenblatt are close though.
Antonucci was never beholden to the calarts cult
Him and John K actually worked for HB at the same time for a short while in the late 70s/early 80s. Canadian animators were just cut from a different cloth back then
Did he rape children with John K too?
Antonucci at least finished his one show, I'll give him that. John K is such a fricking hack that he got booted from his own show after barely a season, yet he crowned himself king of animation and morons believed him.
John K is just a series of problems. Professionally he is a shitty employee that always turns work in late and goes over budget. Privately he is a creepy fricking rage-prone weirdo that no one wants to be in a room with. He's just a bad at doing what he does.
...and yet idiots on /co think he is the greatest master of animation in the last 30 years because he said he was.
outside of guy, who actually respects him?
who knows anymore. It seems like a lot but it wouldn't be surprising to find out it was all guy the entire time.
also, this idiot
Hating won't make you fit in better, pal.
trolling won't give you enough attention to make up for what you didn't get from your parents, buddy
>That was really cool in 1992 because dark comedy in a kids show on nickelodeon was a novel and new thing, the rebellious different thing that pissed off parents and moral leaders a whole lot.
It's this
John K was only popular because he made the edgy dark cartoon that made parents scream.
I hear what you're saying, but I think Rocko's Modern Life did the same thing with more style and class. It refined what he was doing and walked the line with more subtlety.
I dunno, isn't John K the one who started using "CalArts" as a term to describe some stylistic choices?
Now we can never have a thread without someone crying about "muh CalArts" which has morphed into basically whatever that person happens to not like (as if a school had anything to do with that).
CalArts
He also made The Ripping Friends, you rabid hater.
You act like he's Satan Incarnate because he insulted your favorite show. Everything else is rumor and hearsay.
>Maxwell Atoms
What did he do?
He exposes the industry. For instance, he confirmed that the reason Fish Hooks was terrible despite immense talent, was due to executive meddling at Disney with their many rules.
>he confirmed that the reason Fish Hooks was terrible
>"Still, I think there are some great episodes in the series."
>Fish Hooks was terrible
looks like a spongebob ripoff
What rules exactly?
Has Antonucci made anything significant since Ed ended or does nobody in the industry want to work with him anymore
He made a pilot for CN called Snotrocket
I think it’s interesting but the digital coloring makes it feel a little off. The concept itself is charming but really outdated
You should see the existential crisis Charlie Gavin is currently having over the fact that all production dried up in anticipation of the strikes way back in January and there is just no work for anyone anywhere.
https://twitter.com/charliepgavin/status/1690166896879099904
Pretty funny, but because it's beanmouth I don't feel bad for him
The weird thing you guys seem to not realize is that this shit has been feeding the whole consistently using the same design style bullshit of the last 6 years.
There was a poster of Mr Meeseeks looking forward in a studio I was in back in 2019 that had the caption
>This scares the incel
with everyone fricking loving how bean mouth and round teeth triggered the evil incel hordes so much that everyone in the room used to draw various characters with it over and over again, loads of it was posted on twitter at the time.
I have a pretty good idea of who the frick you are. Only three people complained about the pics,
well?
If you were down with it, it's you who came to the wrong neighborhood.
you sound like you enjoy making up scenarios where you are being persecuted.
I despise the beanmouth.
Some of it actually is caused by twitter camps ruining the party for others. But it's more Cartoon Network and Disney TVA than Netflix.
Netflix has always hated any animation that isn't movies or Big Mouth (And with big Mouth it's mostly because they're freaks who fap to it)
Not true, the love their generic "western anime" which is used to ruin existing IPs.
You could always fund some smaller artists directly
It's demoralizing. I truly believe we've already seen the best the medium has to offer and it's all mediocrity from here on out.
>how are you guys liking the slow death of animation?
more like the slow death of cable TV, and I welcome it
there's better shit online/streaming anyways
Yea, like Game Sack and LGR.
In a world where getting woke could make you go broke... hmmm wait
