By the 1930’s, the time frame we’re talking about the US and China being major trading partners, the opium trade was essentially dead between the U.S. and China you moron. Stop trying to drag the U.S. into Britains nonsense. The opium trade was never an official government policy. The U.S. government did not promote or regulate the opium trade in the same way the British government did. In fact The United States was one of the signatories to the International Opium Convention of 1912, also known as the Hague Convention. This treaty aimed to regulate and control the production, distribution, and use of opium and other narcotics for non-medical purposes. It represented an early international effort to address the opium problem. You third worlders are so fricking stupid I swear

Everyone was planning that war would break out in the mid to late 40s, not 39.

US entry into the European war was never a guarantee, had Hitler not declared war in the US there were not enough votes in Congress to make this happen. The population did not want to get involved in another European war. This is fact. Would it have happened eventually, yes - certainly with the in office administration.

Argument one, taxpayers themselves support it (though the support is waning), so you're not really "taking it". Argument two, a stable Europe is in the US best interest, you're stopping Russia before it can reach US allies to whom its a threat and who are already subjected to its hybrid warfare.

What city has 20 million because even Tokyo and Mexico City ain’t that much? And if we go by modern city standards twenty million would be like around two or three cities. If we factor in the 100+ million casualties that’s suspected from WW2 that’s roughly 15 to 20 large cities which is a frickton of deaths.

Depends on the country. They are far, FAR more mature than America because they had their day of reckoning. But they do suffer compared to most European countries. Just look at Germany's view of their own actions during world war 2 to Japan.

The problem with ME is literally that the US and NATO didn't send enough troops. If they started the Afghanistan warwith half a million, they could have had an effective occupation, and the country would be fine right now. But noooo, they had to be cheap asses, which ended up costing them much more for no benefit at all, even worse actually. That's how it worked out with Japan an Germany.

yes half assing things doesn't work and occupation is difficult you can't kill a belief as long as they want to follow a towelhead religion they'll be forever backwards that's how bin laden was able to operate out of there it's a lawless shithole at war for generations

            Anonymous

The problem isn't even belief. US were legit treated as liberators, people hated Taliban. There was a reason people like Hitchens supported the ME wars. But because they didn't have enough troops, they had to use the local warlords people hated even more to control the territory, also eliminating targets by drone bombing which kills dozens of bystanders. No wonder majority of the population turned against them. Fricking stingy burgers.

Germany's infrastructure was destroyed, but most of the institutions necessary to maintain that infrastructure were still intact. This simplified the post-war problem to merely having to rebuild said infrastructure and then the Germans could be trusted to maintain it themselves.

Afghanistan is very different. For starters, many of those institutions were either non-existent and reliant on imported help (most infrastructure in Afghanistan that's still standing was built by the United States or the USSR) or they were much smaller and nowhere near as well funded.

Keep in mind, the "war in Afghanistan" did not start in 2001 with September 11th, it started in 1978 with the Saur Revolution.

The tyranny imposed by Taraki and later Amin drove thousands of Afghan intelligentsia to flee and ultimately proved so intolerable that it ultimately triggered mass insurrection and the Soviet-Afghan War. However much of a bloody shitshow you thought America's adventure in Afghanistan was, the Soviet Union's time there was a thousand times worse. It went well beyond a mere war and became a genocide. The final genocide committed by the Soviet Union in its existence, and it exacted a horrific toll upon the Afghan people. Somewhere in the range of 1 in 10 and 1 in 5 Afghans are believed to have perished in that war. The subsequent disintegration of the country into warlordism after the USSR's downfall was the final nail in the coffin, obliterating virtually that remained of Afghanistan's human capital, leaving a nation populated by people utterly impoverished on a cultural and spiritual as well as physical level.

Afghanistan is for all intents and purposes, a post-apocalyptic society.

Not to defend Japan, but the order is wrong. They invaded China first, killed 20 million people, then decided to attack America to invade the other half.

Japan was crazy (Nationalists being crazy? What are the odds) but a lot of their more dumb decisions were basically the result of a Fawlty tower esque comedy situation where every error they make forces them to make a equally big error to try and fix it.

People who live on islands are always weird and sheltered in their ways. All you have to do is be an immigrant to one in any way shape or form to realise that everyone from an island is a huge pussy. Even if you move domestically from a mainland living situation to an island you will quickly realise everyone there has a sandy vegana. Island people are meek and pretentious and want to remain closed off. Ironically, they don't acquire necessary survival or social skills once a certain threshold of civilization has been achieved. It's fine if the vegana-having to wiener ratio of indigenous populations strays a bit high to around 60-40 perhaps, but when all native inhabitants possess a vegana it is a dire situation indeed. Proof things really need to be co-ed. Avoid ever having to situate on an island permanently as a immigrant, even if there is a decent job there. You will not be accepted or fit in.
