why does this album cause seethe?
In the old days it made sense (double albums were expensive and people who didn’t like it felt they wasted a lot of time and money) but I genuinely don’t get it now. I guess it’s just a vestigial remnant of the old seethe.
Beefheart’s voice is a little harsh, but it’s not much harsher than most other blues artists. Compared to many, I’d say his voice is downright pleasant. The riffs are cool. Some people think the album is all randomness, but that’s only half-true. Beechcraft had no skill with any instrument, so he just banged on a piano randomly looking for sounds he liked while his friend wrote it down and fashioned it into complete songs with band arrangements. The guitar, drums, bass etc. are all very tight and harmonious with one another. The end result is like a mix between blues rock and math rock. I like math rock, I’m only a moderate fan of blues, I’ve listened to the album a few times out of genuine enjoyment
