While I always have hated Anime due to the world of each series having a single streamlined source of powers like Ki in Dragon Ball or Stans in JoJo, instead of having a menagery of powers cathegories and kinds as you would have on a western role playing game... I think Avatar is actually one of the worst examples you can use here. when you have shit like X-men for example.
I mean the elements and just moving them around, really? loincloth-wearing cannibals from the fricking Jungle had better myths than that. I will never understand Avatar's popularity other than "we... we can do Anime too!" mentality.
I hate this kinda shit cause it puts everything in meaningless categories just to have one category that is simply just "anything else." wiener Piece does the same thing.
in practice the categories don't matter because everyone has some insane jojo tier ability that turns your butthole inside out if you look at them the wrong way.
"oh he did this thing, he must be a transmuter, i will act accordingly" no one ever thinks this way.
it's "ah frick this guy makes people explode, i'm going to stay away from him." or " this guys strong, i'll hit him with a Big Punch, and it'll work this time because i'm the protagonist."
This, no point in even bothering with categories if you end up just having a kitchen sink one anyway. Because then you almost always get anyone of note going there making the rest meaningless.
That's the fault of the writer if he cant learn how to make a decent character that doesnt fall into the special god powers category.
There's only like 3 Specialists of note in the entirety of HxH, one of them already dead from simply being poisoned. So the ones outside the specialist category really do matter.
This, no point in even bothering with categories if you end up just having a kitchen sink one anyway. Because then you almost always get anyone of note going there making the rest meaningless.
How so? The extra category is just whatever that doesn't fit in the others.
I guess "Dragon Prince" counts, I would mention the Lord of the Rings cartoons, but I don't think LOTR has a hard magic system. I wish some of Sanderson's books got made into cartoons so we would have more hard magic in western animation.
Except the categories of nen are far from arbitrary and if anything are necessary to the plot.
specialization is literally just "miscellaneous"
>specialization is literally just "miscellaneous"
It's also the rarest nen category, and most nen specialists use nen in a way that's consistent with what the other categories can do.
That's to be expected when you only have three categories, and two of the them are as basic and narrow as animals and elements.
>That's to be expected when you only have three categories, and two of the them are as basic and narrow as animals and elements.
Except nen has six categories and each describes the effect of the ability and not some arbitrary "element" or some such nonsense.
Anime giving everyone the exact same source of power is lame
Then why do so many autists on Cinemaphile think that x men should be it's own universe because hurr? Why do people still discuss various bending types while hating what Kora did to bending in Avatar? Both are good if done well.
This, no point in even bothering with categories if you end up just having a kitchen sink one anyway. Because then you almost always get anyone of note going there making the rest meaningless.
Can you think of a few superpower that CAN'T be placed in the other 5 categories?
How about Time manipulation?
It dont enhance
You're not transmuting anything or emitting
Definitely not conjuring
Manipulating? Ehhh bit of a stretch, I dont think it counts for intangible concepts.
It falls just outside of all the categories I think.
Specialist is more for abilities that fall withing multiple nen categories.
You both talk about nen like you couldnt combine categories like Castro did. And yes that means it would be extremely difficult to develop techniques that involve more than 2 categories but thats exactly what they did in Greed Island, many users combining categories into something incredibly complex.
TL:DR complex powers like time manipulation shouldnt be feasible by a single character, or at least would required A LOT of artifacts/research/sacrifices/pacts with demons (think pic related)
Shape-shifting
Precognition
Clairvoyance
Necromancy
Time stop and time manipulation in general
Portal creation
Any power that has something to do with manipulating powers of other people
People with powers like these who already exist in HxH are all classified as specialists.
Admittedly I forgot about Knov existing and being a Conjurer, but to be fair it seems like this classification is more about him manifesting the pocket dimension his portals lead to and not portals themselves. I'm not sure if generic portals from point A to point N, without interdimensional room in-between, would count as conjuration.
>Shapeshifting
Transmutation, Manipulation, or Conjuration. Hisoka has used Bungee Gum for slight disguises/shifting, Biscuit shifts herself into her e-girl form, Illumi uses his needles to take a disguise and can shift temporarily without them, and Tsubone can shapeshift into vehicles. >Precognition
Weird toss up as Tserriednich is the poster child and is a specialist but that's because his Nen Beast is Discount King Crimson but Gon and Netero could have split second precognition/battle sense in combat through Enhancement. >Clairvoyance
Define Clairvoyance. If it's just remote viewing, then it's possible through Nen Beasts and that can be Emission+Manipulation or even Conjuration through creatures/objects. One of the Kakin Grunts, Musse, could summon an Owl-like Nen Beast to spy on people remotely via Emission & Manipulation. Palm Siberia was a Clairvoyant through a Crystal Ball/Fishman Corpse and she's an Enhancer not a Specialist. >Necromancy
Manipulation if it's just control of Corpses. Illumi does this all the time with Corpse Control & Needle People. >Time Stop
Worldwide Time might be closer to Specialist but Cheetru could manipulate the flow of time in his pocket dimension to extend his races but he was an idiot that loses the ability if he lost a race. It's possible to slow down time in a pocket dimension with Conjuration but really taxing to do so. >Portal Creation
>portal creation >specialist
Anon....
beat me to it/Knov but also Leorio to an extent with Remote Punch. >Manipulating Other People's Powers
Ability Theft/Copying yes but Power Improvement/Enhancement is still possible. Bill is an Enhancer who can improve the Nen Abilities of others and Biscuit's Nen Beasts can improve your healing/learning of Nen Techniques.
The Nen Beasts of the Kakin family also screw this up as Zhang Lei can create coins that give powers to people including improving their own powers (Conjuration) and Benjamin's Beast can increase your Aura and boost your powers too (Enhancement).
>By this same logic X-Men is lazy.
They literally invented mutants so they could be lazy, and not have to think of origin stories for their powers. You played yoself.
Because MHA whole point is trying to emulate western sensibilities and try to abandond that Chi bullshit while still having the Anime style, X-men comparisson is unfari, it is fricking old and they are a product of their tyme extrapolating human diferences like race and sexual preference with genetic mutations. of course is not that original nowadays but it was original back then, Anime is literally the remnants of their religion applied to a school grade system where you spend your time grindign it. MHA exists in part thanks to the super hero live action movie boom from the past 15 years.
Not only that if you wanna go even back further see the greeks and roman myths, even the olympians being the same type of creatures/gods can have widly different origins and habilities.

Tbf, Hori needed a way to have 90% of earth citizens to have powers, so going the x-men way was the best way to do it. I kinda feel like one power per individuals is lame though.

Yu Yu Hakusho was always mid at best. The characters were its real charm. But having good characters doesn't elevate a mediocre story. Just look at Demon Slayer. Azuka peacing out was a great character beat, but it was an unfathomably shitty story beat. The entire final arc is just a rushed mess.

My main complain is with One Piece doubling down on the shitiest and most prevalent trope in battle shonen, the golden genes. It wasnt enough to make Luffy Dragon's son (although I insist he is Roger's, just look at the 4 of them and tell me whom is whose kid) and member of the D (whatever that means) but now he is also the reincarnation of a god or something? Fricking Naruto all over again.

Because he's cartoon rubber. Actual rubber would have melted with the amount of volts that Enel hit him with.
It's not lazy, it's just telling a different kind of story.
The point of MHA is that basically everyone in the world has powers, and to showcase how the world would change to deal with that. Characters still have origin stories that are unique to growing up with their specific power, they just got them for the same reason everyone else did. Having nearly every person on the planet all independently gain powers due to getting bitten by a spider or hit by cosmic rays all within the span of a few years would be laughably convoluted.
>Having nearly every person on the planet all independently gain powers due to getting [...] hit by cosmic rays all within the span of a few years would be laughably convoluted.
No it isn't, you just have a big high-intensity cosmic ray bathe the whole earth. Scientists discuss this scenario to death, though mostly for the mass destruction and infrastructure shutdown angle and less the "OH MY SEVEN QUIRKS"
it's bad because is not like DnD type shit, I want to have multiple categories and types of creatures, monsters, demons and heroes.
The reason why Anime powers all come from a streamlined single source is for them to have tournament arcs and powerscalling. you know why? because it is like grade school and the powers are the grades you get. They reflect their way of seing the world in their fiction.
I think it's fine depending on the setting and story. Not every one wants to go crazy with the sources of power. I do think it becomes shit if you do a retcon like in Ben 10 where magic was linked to an alien race genes instead of being its own thing people could study and learn.
Is kino.
I like that World trigger all have trion but only a few one had the 'abilities' (so the one without it need to use weapon), is like a more realistic Nen
>special can do anything the others cant. >also it can do everything the others can
Of course the laziest mangaka ever come up with the laziest energy system ever.
So how would you classify a power that fits in every category or outside of them? Especially when your powers can be almost anything.
Would you rather them shove extra shit into another category even though it doesnt really fit? Like how lightning is a firebending technique when it hardly has any relation beyond heat generation.
>how would you classify a power that fits in every category or outside of them?
YOU dont put in YOUR story, is that simple. Whats the fricking point of a power system if you are gonna make it irelevant by either making your MC the second coming of power incarnated (ie 99% of every damn shonen ever) or worse, create a blank slate in advance to save your story whenever you write yourself into a corner like Hiatus x Hiatus?
Also lightning is fire in the sky, dont be so dense anon.
My guy in HxH,and in the context of the power system, the MC is some kid who can only punch things hard, and he gets absolutely murked by anyone that can move faster than he can or outsmart him , which ain't hard. You're making specialist sound much more greater than it actually is. It's actually no better than any other category, only exists to say, we literally cannot classify this power in any of the aforementioned categories, so dump it in the we dont fricking know category.
Also that's bullshit and you know it. Electricity and Fire are two different things, next you're going to tell me Spirit projecting are just very fancy air bubbles you fart out of your system.
Anonymous
>MC is some kid
Why do you lie? He is the son of the greatest hunter ever who is such a badass and is so free-spirited and cool and does what he wants and of course Gon is the same because nips are OBSESSED with genes, in shonen MC is either related to some big shot or the reincarnation of said big shot.
Specialists are narrative crutches the hack with crooked back uses everytime the plot needs help solving a problem to move forward. Compare it with any JoJo story, where every stand is the same as the specialist class but for most of the story that "anything goes" bullshit is only used for entertaining value (right up to the climax where Araki inevitably would shit the bed and do some kind of reality warping shenaningangs).
>Electricity and Fire are two different things
Yeah for you, on this planet, in the XXI century. For medieval asians in a mystical land where they can fart a tornado by doing a backflip? Lightning is the fire of the sky.
Also people in TLA can have spiritual powers without bending (see that poo who helped Aang with the Avatar State) so your comparison is flawed from the beginning

That doesn't really make sense still. That's like saying because I'm a water bender and everyone thinks lava is just really hot water, I should theoretically be able to bend lava.
It sounds to me like you're really trying to force lightining into making sense when it should've honestly been classified as a different form of bending.
And so what if Gon is the son of a famous hunter, he still didnt get anything from him. Every feat Gon has done has been 100% him. Ging didnt do anything to him except make greed island. Unless something was said after the chairman arc, I'm pretty sure you cant say genetics here. Not like Naruto that has Uzumaki blood + a 9 tail demon to be a living chakra tank for him

That was something that was explained anyone could do when kurapika was training. Actually part of the reason Kurapika is so strong is because he put on a condition that he is not allowed to use half his moves on anyone except a phantom spider or he'll die.
That was not Gon specific, my dude was just so pissed he'd throw his life away and perhaps even the ability to use nen in the first place to win that fight. They even had to bring in an bigger bullshit monster to bring him back to life.

said, everything Gon is capable of is due to him winning the genetic lottery.
It gets even funnier because the latest arc of hxh moved on from hamon nen to literal stand users. You cant make this shut up and people were hyping this shit to come back for a decade
It's actually like "You have 6 different power systems and Nen lets you learn one of them." >Enhancer: DBZ Kai >Manipulator: Bleach Bankais >Transmuter: One Piece Devil Fruits >Conjurer: Jojo Stands >Emitter: Avatar Bending >Specialist: All of the above
The funny part is that all of this is null because all nen users can still use other forms to a (lesser)extent and specialist exist. People always say how deep HxH's power system is and really, it just has an autistic amount of rules to do the same basic shonen shit that everyone else does.
>all nen users can still use other forms
Everyone has a specific class specialization they excel in and will be efficient at. Using the other categories that aren't yours weakens your uber special ability and sacrifices potency for your Hatsu, while focusing on a single one gives it optimal power. It's like DnD in that way.
Specialist don't also have the ability to use every other category willynilly, the same penalty applies and people in this thread are misunderstanding what a specialist is. The only one able to do that is Kurapica.
Yeah nen users can still use other forms they aren't born with, but doing so will actively hinder you than help you. It's like you're geared up and specced to be a bowman, but your dumbass is sitting there trying to learn magic spells.
Now youre a shit archer and a shit magician. Only a true dumbass would actually try to master a technique outside of their specific nen type. And even so, they're limited to nen types adjacent to theirs.
This doesn't seem right. Devil fruits do all kinds of shit. Also how the frick is Zeno a Transmuter instead of an Emitter, every attack he does is just shooting some kind of energy, but I guess it's "transmuting" because he turns gives it a cool dragon shape?? Like sure Transmuters can use Emitter techniques, but they establish early on that people who lean too heavily on techniques that aren't their specialty are the weaker guys in the setting *because* they're doing it wrong
I think they were just side characters that didnt go into detail about their techniques. Gon is an exemplarary enchancer but he still has the paper emitter ability(a ki blast) in his arsenal of attacks. It's not as strong as his main rock but it doesnt seem to hinder his main nen type. Am I missing some detail?
He uses his aura more like clay and manipulates it, not just firing it out fires it out raw. It's function isn't meant to be used like firing dakka like Razor uses it for.
Zeno is implied to be one of the stronger characters in the setting, and also all of the Zoldyck's abilities we see are pretty straightforward without a bunch of weird conditions (they're assassins, they don't have time for that shit), so that's why I would expect his abilities to be a pretty straightforward use of his main strengths
Most of the abilities he uses involve controlling the shape of his aura without actually separating it (e.g. the dragon during the Chrollo fight, the dragon he rides with Netero). That's transmutation.
If I didn't know the periodic table/study of chemistry was real, and I suddenly learned about the rules in a show, I'd call the writers talentless hacks for coming up with something so unbelievable
>All of the novels take place in the same fantasy universe, spanning a time period of almost two thousand years. >Within this universe, all matter is aligned with two competing forces: order and chaos. In their natural state, these forces are equally matched, in a condition called Balance. These two forces can be seen as fantasy representations of the natural entropy (chaos) that occurs in matter, balanced by the various molecular forces (order) that bind matter into structured forms. These forces are understood, at a basic level, by all inhabitants of the world. The colour white is identified with chaos; black with order. The first published novel explains it this way: white is the chaotic combination of all wavelengths of visible light, while black is the absence of this light. The extreme of either is undesirable...for a human, perfect chaos is destruction, perfect order is death.
Sounds cool, although I think the electromagnetic force can help entropy too.
I fricking love hxh in a way capeshit will never be able to compete, it is just so creative, in just the 2 chapters togashi releasead since the 4 year hiatus, there are already 2 new cool abilities
True. I started to see the flaws of DBZ and Dragon Ball thanks to HxH, how the death of characters mean shit, power levels are just goku/sayains screaming until they win.
Togashi makes very tense scenarios.
Yeah, sorry I meant more a subset. Emission feels like it's like Illusion, and then obviously there's one that's just dealer's choice. But the other 4 have a pretty direct comparison.
hard power systems are kind of lame outside of shonen anime and even then those only exist because japan is obsessed with hard rules for everything and they jerk off hard when the protagonist breaks all those rules
whenever the west tries to do hard power systems you get schlock like sanderson's mistborn garbage that just reads like a bad video game novelization
the old "big three" shonens(one piece, bleach, naruto) all had a pretty rudimentary power system but since it was battle shonen, it's all dumbed down to just hitting shit as hard as you can to win. Funny enough, one of their biggest IPs, Fate stay night was also all about masturbatory power system explanation that went on for literal hours only to have it's protagonist break all the rules anyway and you're right, they always happily eat that shit when that happens.
>sanderson's mistborn garbage that just reads like a bad video game novelization
I thought I was the only one that thought this or at least the extreme minority. Because his power systems always read like some autist that needed to create his own fictional laws of physics and periodic table to explain why someone can cast fireball. At the very least it made me realize that I took soft magic stories for granted by forgoing all of that tedious bullshit
Good power systems don't work on spectrums and don't let you infinitely buff abilities. As long as you follow those two simple rules and don't introduce anything too stupid, you're fine.
Also the less powers involve making and moving shit, the better. Freeform abilities like telekinesis, even of specific materials, and conjuration, even of specific materials, generally lead to broken shit.
>5 specifically defined powers
ok cool >1 other power that could be anything
fricking ruined. what's the point of even having the other 5, why not just have everyone be a "specialization"
Nen is shit. Same reason Jojo stands are shit. Same reason Yu Yu Hakusho territories are shit. Don't get me wrong, they can lead to fun fights and scenes but to pretend, even for a moment, the system is balanced is laughable.
People can make up bullshit powers that fall into each category. The fact they have a category doesn't make the power any less bullshit. Specialists just exist for whatever ability the author makes up that is just too outlandish to fall into any other category (despite being able to justify it somewhat).
Territories weren't shit. >The system balance is laughable.
Systems don't have to be balanced. And non-structured systems absolutely shouldn't be. Some of the best fricking anime and manga are about wildly unbalanced systems. Law of Ueki starts with the main character able to turn trash into trees. That's his power. Incredibly niche transmutation. Zatch Bell! was unbalanced as frick and popular as frick. Power systems built entirely out of gimmicks are "fun". Remember "fun"?
That said nen and stands are shit. Both are underexplained in some areas and overexplained in others and inconsistent as shit with their own rules and nen in particular is up its own butthole.
>Don't get me wrong, they can lead to fun fights and scenes but to pretend, even for a moment, the system is balanced is laughable.
So their not shit? Why is balance a prerequisite for some reason? You can't tell me that the Marvel and DC universes are somehow "balanced. >The fact they have a category doesn't make the power any less bullshit
Yes it does. >People can make up bullshit powers that fall into each category
Once a power falls into a category it has to abide by it's rules making it not BS. >Specialists just exist for whatever ability the author makes up that is just too outlandish to fall into any other category
Most specialists we have seen in HxH ether use aspects of all other categories (see Kurapica and Chrolo) or multiple categories (Pitou) or cases where it's kind of up in the air like Meruem.
>So their not shit? Why is balance a prerequisite for some reason? You can't tell me that the Marvel and DC universes are somehow "balanced.
Marvel and DC are shit though and have much bigger problems than balance. Like the fact that not a single power is consistent and works differently under different author or even under the same author, with no rhyme or reason, and nonsensical power fluctuations, de- and repowerings, power upgrades and downgrades are all incredibly commonplace.
>Like the fact that not a single power is consistent and works differently under different author or even under the same author, with no rhyme or reason, and nonsensical power fluctuations, de- and repowerings, power upgrades and downgrades are all incredibly commonplace.
Ah, so like OH MY RUBBER NEN. But, you know, with the occasional good story instead of decades of fujobait dreck.

That shit was foreshadowed literally years before it happened and yet drooling morons like you still make low-effort shitposts about it.
>Ah, so like OH MY RUBBER NEN.
Disregarding the fact that this was kind of foreshadowed, comic powers have worse asspulls anyway. Or the opposite problem where characters have powers that can solve the plot in a second but never use them.
> OH MY RUBBER NEN
funny thing is that wasnt as big as an asspull as >Kurapika hate spiders so he can use all the super powers against them which is a pointless restriction because he wont be used in any other kind of story except those involving the spiders

Thats all I ask, what I cant stand is idiots pretending is le deep. For me JoJo is the ultimate "shut down your brain and enjoy it" show.
I really don't understand Nen. Nen just feels like the author just gave each character whatever sounded cool to him and just slapped it wherever on the Nen flowchart.
I mean these characters was already powerful even before Nen was introduced. I didn't see why Gon couldn't have kept his Fishing rod or at least incorporated it into his Nen.
Hatsu are different to nen specialties. They use all facets of nen but tend to err towards those the user is best at which is their own and the two adjacent types. Your baseline nen-type just flavours how you fight with nen control still being equally or more important. It's LITERALLY just a matter of inclination/disposition correlating to preference/instinct in how they use nen. It's not a rule. Anyone can use any nen. You're just faster at learning certain ones over others.
The nen model is just that, a model of typical behaviours. Same thing with Hatsu. If you want to be hyper autistic you can go all out can do basically anything if you have the time and the willpower (and are willing to make dumb compromises). But no one has infinite time and mental resources.
>Picrel
What the frick is this incoherent ESL word salad? What was the point of even bringing it up? >what matters is skill and experience
Skill doesn't mean shit when your opponent is ten times stronger, faster and tougher than you.
>power classifications and ratings are goofy at best
Just what I expect from a bureaucracy tasked with managing and tracking superhumans. I remember getting a good laugh when at some point late in the story they just went "frick it, assume the worst" and gave Taylor a minimum 2 rating in every category to keep the response teams on their toes.
yu gi oh, it has a good power system, as long as the protagonist does not use "the heart of the cards" which is the synonym of cheating when the writer does not want the protagonist to lose cleanly.
>any writer can make anyone win any fight for any reason, therefore killing all stakes, tensions and consequences >this is good
You're a living example of capeshit brain rot.
Sure all modern fantasy books in the west are filled with cringe magic systems. Power systems are fricking dump and moronic, whoever writes them and whoever reads and enjoys this shit should be shot dead
I like Avatar's bending. If you're gonna make a power system, I think you should start from a simple, easy-to-grasp concept and gradually build on it. The power system in avatar doesn't get much more complex than "use martial arts to manipulate the elements" but there's an astounding amount of depth to it. This guy did a pretty good video on it.
I also think the Neutrals of TGT are a really good power system for this reason. Again, really simple core concept: Use magic strings to reanimate the dead, keep your emotions placcid. But there's an incredible amount of complexity built around it and it gets utilized in tons of creative ways.
>shonenshitters actually believe they're not moronic only because their favorite shonen explains every aspect in detail, ad nauseam >also: "how do I read batman durrrr?"
You're no better than a capeshitter.
You're never going to make an interesting power system by studying other fiction. An interesting power system comes from within, the perspective of studying the material sciences and the natural world around us.
Do other fictional works not count as 'the natural world around us'? Great artists steal, figure out a system you like and find ways to make it better.
The reality is that power systems are in of themselves flawed. A child with a gun can kill you just as easily as a rhino's horn can. This idea that powers inherently win out over others is childish. Reality is they are merely tools like anything else. To quote
, if you're nothing without the powers in that system, you weren't really powerful anyway.
Brandon Mull's books are pretty good for power systems. Besides "Beyonders" which is a standard magical system but explores unique Magical races as the focus, his other series "FableHaven" and "The Five Kingdoms" contain great magical systems.
FableHaven: Humans have no innate magical powers, but magical creatures and magic do exist. Humans can only use magic through Enchanted Items created by wizards, which are not human, potions or to be infused with magic by a creature.
Five Kingdoms: As is standard most people are normal gays but some have the skill to be "Shapers", which is what they call the magicians in this world. Depending on where which kingdom you live in the magic is different. 1st Kingdom (Sambria) Shapers can control physical objects and create enchanted items. Hence Shapers. 2nd Kingdom (Elloweer) is illusionary magic and high levels are pretty much transformations. They shape appearances 3rd Kingdom (Zeropolis) is pseudo-science with AI and future weapons. They Shape Energy 4th Kingdom (Necronum) connects to the After Life (EcoLands) and you can talk to spirits, form pacts etc. Shape the Soul 5th kingdom (Creon) is about bending Space and you know Wormhole Theories so time as well. Shape well Space. And a small area at the centre that has all magics, but they are noticeably weaker, called Junction.
I like stands as much as the next guy. Its an excuse to make really creative character designs and interesting fights.....
However Part 3 had a lot of stupid shit that never occurred again in the series and was immediately dropped after >Every stand is named after a Tarot card, this is dropped in part 4 and never mentioned again >Jotaro has the same stand ability to DIO and it is never properly explained why the two have the same ability and no 2 characters ever share another ability going forward >Jotaros mother doesn't have enough Willpower for a Stand so it slowly kills her but a rat, a dog, a monkey, a turtle, a bird and even a sword somehow do?
has the same stand ability to DIO and it is never properly explained why the two have the same ability and no 2 characters ever share another ability going forward
I always, for like a decade assumed It was because The World was Johnathan's stand that Dio had hijacked and a similar stand was passed own to Jotaro through the stand equivalent of recessive genetic traits.
But fans have told me The World is literally Dio's stand so it is actually a complete coincidence.
Apparently that's not the case but it'd be neat.
Though ultimately it's obvious Araki just kind of thought of it late in the game as a cool twist.
If he thought of it earlier and was just a better writer it'd be smart to plant seeds that Star Platinum wasn't just "He's like really fricking strong and fast and that's it"
>Jotaro has the same stand ability to DIO and it is never properly explained why the two have the same ability and no 2 characters ever share another ability
This was the moment when I knew JoJo was the ultimate 'turn your brains off and enjoy thE cool shit on screen' anime. Pissed me off too because all the elements were there to make SP the perfect counter for ZaWarudo, SP was shown to be getting faster and faster as the series progressed so when they faced DIO all Akari had to do was make his punches as fast as light so they would BE SENT INTO THE FUTURE rendering ZaWarudo useless. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20 I guess.
The shot with Holly not being to handle a stand will always urk me after the baby, Iggy and RAT. It feels like a copout reason to have her in a dire situation.
Stand powers are repeated to a certain degree though. Little Feat and Goo Goo Dolls are the same power minus GGD's user shrinking herself but it's not out right stated she couldn't use it in herself.
I mean there was another baby and an orangutan in Part 3.
I just like to pretend Holly has a stand still, I'm not sure if it's confirmed but Josuke possibly had stand sickness during Part 3 as well and developed a full stand. If you survive, you get a stand so Holly deserves one too.
Would the Miraculous from Miraculous Ladybug count? >Each Miraculous user has a Miraculous (magical accessory) and a Kwami (creature embodying a concept) >Transform into an alternate persona by having Kwamis go into Miraculous via transformation phrase >Gain enhanced strength, speed, reflexes and durability, as well as a weapon and powers based on a concept (Creation, Destruction, etc).
>read story of mutie OC with super strengh without durability >rofl stomps absolutely everything >was only held off once by two twins working complete unison >actually gets almost killed by his best friend knowing all his weaknesses
It was kino.
and then i remembered it was fanfic
and then i sat there wondering how the frick modern professional western writing can't do the same
There's a lot of weird shit, but it helps the whole surreal bleak existential thing it's going for. Author is actually a channer. I found him in a short-lived fanfic thread.
Is it really fan-fiction if it just uses the setting or whatever?
I see that a lot of this kind of thing and when the official movies/TV shows/comics are complete ass and make these supposed fan-fiction writers look like accomplished authors by comparison
Those adaptions completely disregard the setting though. Afungi goes out of his way to justify and mention things. When Spider-Man appears (spoilers, kinda I guess), you can tell he has a love of the setting or at least the characters. The sentinels that attack (spoilers again I guess) in Zero Tolerance are from the event itself. Lampshades are more for the things the author may have fricked up on, like the warehouse having two floors, than making fun of the setting
>and then i sat there wondering how the frick modern professional western writing can't do the same
Because modern professional western writing is glorified fanfic writers, but with the added constraints of having to shackle themselves to a century of continuity and direct editorial oversight ensuring their stories can work as part of the undying shared continuity. Something like that would get editorialized to hell and back to fit whatever ideas the editor-in-chief has in mind for the shared setting, and nothing is allowed to simply stand on its own anymore.
I meant in general. It's not just comics suffering from it.
>and then i sat there wondering how the frick modern professional western writing can't do the same

>adventure time.
It is an easy system to understand, but complex to master and you only have to use the logic of the rpg, you can use magic or science and you will arrive at the same place.
You can master magic in one day and be a ninja or build a super robotic suit and smash everyone's face, you just need strategy to stand out in battle.
Even HxH's power system exists to set false expectations for the reader so that it's cool and exciting when the established ceiling is shattered. Ultimately complexity and consistency aren't that important to the narrative tool aspect of power systems.
My favorite battle shonen are kinnikuman and toriko, and those barely even have power systems outside of a measurement for strength. Most characters powers work by their own established rules, which seems to work fine.
It's insane to me how little HxH there is relative to how long it's been published. I feel like I was just starting to feel some momentum and then I caught up. Meanwhile I've read manga that started publication years later, and ended as longer manga than the entirety of HxH up to this point.
You're not gonna get anything better than bending in Avatar
Well the choice of elements was really uninspired.
I will never understand Avatar's popularity other than "we... we can do Anime too!" mentality.
its simplicity is its beauty
>Stans in JoJo
t. Never saw anything relating to the first two parts or part 7
I hate this kinda shit cause it puts everything in meaningless categories just to have one category that is simply just "anything else." wiener Piece does the same thing.
In what way are the categories meaningless
specialization is literally just "miscellaneous"
in practice the categories don't matter because everyone has some insane jojo tier ability that turns your butthole inside out if you look at them the wrong way.
I can’t even begin to tell you how stupid that id.
How so? The extra category is just whatever that doesn't fit in the others.
That's to be expected when you only have three categories, and two of the them are as basic and narrow as animals and elements.
It's also the rarest nen category, and most nen specialists use nen in a way that's consistent with what the other categories can do.
>That's to be expected when you only have three categories, and two of the them are as basic and narrow as animals and elements.
Except nen has six categories and each describes the effect of the ability and not some arbitrary "element" or some such nonsense.
Then why do so many autists on Cinemaphile think that x men should be it's own universe because hurr? Why do people still discuss various bending types while hating what Kora did to bending in Avatar? Both are good if done well.
Can you think of a few superpower that CAN'T be placed in the other 5 categories?
No, any conceivable power in fiction can fit within the 4 categories without the nned of specialist.
How about Time manipulation?
It dont enhance
You're not transmuting anything or emitting
Definitely not conjuring
Manipulating? Ehhh bit of a stretch, I dont think it counts for intangible concepts.
It falls just outside of all the categories I think.
Specialist is more for abilities that fall withing multiple nen categories.
Every story doesn't need to be kitchen sink bullshit that allows every power.
Shape-shifting
Precognition
Clairvoyance
Necromancy
Time stop and time manipulation in general
Portal creation
Any power that has something to do with manipulating powers of other people
People with powers like these who already exist in HxH are all classified as specialists.
>portal creation
>specialist
Anon....
>Portal Creation
beat me to it/Knov but also Leorio to an extent with Remote Punch.
Anime giving everyone the exact same source of power is lame
No dipshit thats not bad. Its not automatically good, execution still matters but dont act like its inherently shit.
>hurr mha not giving anyone an origin story like superheroes is le good
Shut up homosexual, it's lazy
MHA literally has chapters titled "[Character Name] : Origin". By this same logic X-Men is lazy.
OH MY 7 QUIRKS
>trying to compare a development setting up future abilities, which was both foreshadowed and predicted as such, none of which are introduced to immediately quell a threat, as an asspull
>to the biggest "you didn't win" bullshit put to paper
homosexual
please
Tbf, Hori needed a way to have 90% of earth citizens to have powers, so going the x-men way was the best way to do it. I kinda feel like one power per individuals is lame though.
As opposed to Venom becoming captain universe, wielding mjolnir and having that god cutting black sword ?
>this one example is proof it happens nearly as much in manga
and before you go 'name one:'
>Bleach (Fullbringer, Shinigami, hollow, and quincy)
>Naruto (Uzumaki bloodline, muh super yellow flash daddy, reincarnation of asura, and sealed fox)
>Yu Yu Hakusho (I AM LE ANCIENT DEMON KING CHILD)
>One Piece (SURPRISE! IT WAS THE SUN GOD FRUIT ALL ALONG)
really quite disgusting
Yu Yu Hakusho's was disappointing. I really wish that last arc was just undone.
>The asspull that is said to be one of a kind in manga is despicable.
>The asspull that is said to be one of a kind in a comics is not a proof
>one piece
That one hurted the most...
Yeah. It was arguably its last saving grace after Haki made everything about who has the greatest fart cloud ability. But no. Luffy is a generic shounen protagonist. Always was.
>One Piece (SURPRISE! IT WAS THE SUN GOD FRUIT ALL ALONG)
I love how you can tell bad readers from their media criticism.
The only inconsistency that happened was the direct rubber connection, everything else fits with what was established and the means by which it occurs is meaningful, not pulled out of nowhere.
Fricking Naruto all over again.
should've read a better manga
i know omega is a meme
Sad part? For many years One Piece WAS the better manga to read.
you're joking right?
>arrive to island
>split up
>get into shenanigans
>emotional moment
>somehow end up together again near the end
>luffy beats up big musclehead
>repeat
That's just the steps of the hero's journey
That doesn't mean it's good.
Finally someone talking sense, yeah that's why Dragon doesn't care about Luffy, but gives a huge frick about ace. Also why Luffy wasn't told who his daddy was, because it's not even true. Those long faced mfers
Are any of these fricking shounenshits any good?
FMA was okay, but kind of forgettable.
A lot actually start really good. It's just rot sets in, some sooner than others.
Chainsawman, I guess. Except Chainsaw Man isn't really traditional shounen: it's existential schizo shit. Mato Seihei no Slave is entertaining at the very least, albeit extremely basic. Brings back the old battle harem, which gives me nostalgic good feels.
I know they start good. That's why they're all so infuriating.
Fire Punch was kind of a let down too. I'll still attempt Chainsaw Man.
Mato Seihei no Slave looks generic as hell.
I gave up on this turd after Whole Cake Island. Hearing about Wano, I'm glad I did.
Well, if you haven't watched Naruto, you can read all the way up to Pain. Out of the big three, I'd argue it's the one that kept up quality the most. Except it still ended shit.
It is super fricking generic. But that doesn't mean it can't be good nor entertaining.
Naruto has a lot of cool ideas, but has the worst execution out of the big three, and has by far the most filler. I've been rewatching it recently and it really only holds up at all due to nostalgia.
It's still better, which is the weirdest shit. I forgot that you could go through the entirety of part 1 absolutely hyped. And then Shippuden happened.
As a kid, I actually loved the filler. Made the world feel bigger. Although it was all noncanon.
>Shippuden happened.
And the more it goes on the more it shits over the original's themes. Sasori's fight was kino.
really the last time sakura was useful
I read manga mostly, I don't like watching anime. Too slow for what it is.
Naruto has actually filtered me the most. I've never gotten that far after multiple attempts.
One Piece is unironically the greatest story ever told, but it will likely take you months or years to get through so take that as you will.
Devilman and dorohedoro.
give up on shonenshit
>SURPRISE! IT WAS THE SUN GOD FRUIT ALL ALONG
If you were actually surprised, you haven't been paying attention.
please
frick off
>His powers don't apply when it would be funny
>People have been commenting in-universe that he does things rubber shouldn't be able to do for years
>He literally blows into his hand like a balloon to make it punch harder
But now it's "suddenly" revealed that he's a cartoon and you're surprised? Come on now.
please
And what is the point of Luffy being able to stretch his own body and make it stronger? It made sense before because we could argue it was thanks to haki (all that heat release shit), but now it's just crap.
You're saying the heat release shit make's LESS sense because he's a sun god?
no, I'm saying that the power to stretch his body is meaningless now.
also, I hate that stupid sun god explanation.
How so? He incorporates it into his fighting style now more than ever.
if he's not rubber than how is he immune to electricity?
Because he's cartoon rubber. Actual rubber would have melted with the amount of volts that Enel hit him with.
It's not lazy, it's just telling a different kind of story.
The point of MHA is that basically everyone in the world has powers, and to showcase how the world would change to deal with that. Characters still have origin stories that are unique to growing up with their specific power, they just got them for the same reason everyone else did. Having nearly every person on the planet all independently gain powers due to getting bitten by a spider or hit by cosmic rays all within the span of a few years would be laughably convoluted.
MHA is the worst of the battle shounen manga I've read, despite all of this.
no it isn't
That was re-retconed to be "magic is real and this alien species is just genetically good at it". Like DC and homosexual Magi.
fire force made it work.
Yeah, let's never do that, like having some people posess a special gene that gives them powers. That would never work.
Is kino.
I like that World trigger all have trion but only a few one had the 'abilities' (so the one without it need to use weapon), is like a more realistic Nen
I agree. It always feels very forced and strange.
HxH suuuuucks
>power scaling
There's only one type of scaling Cinemaphilentrarians reply to
What show is this from?
American Dad
aka Funnier Family Guy
Roger ruins the show.
>Roger carry the show.
ftfy
you truly are a newbie
>good/unique power systems
Your pic is unrelated, I see
Nen is literally the best and well thought out power system in all of shounen, or at least top 3
>special can do anything the others cant.
>also it can do everything the others can
Of course the laziest mangaka ever come up with the laziest energy system ever.
Not like Naruto that has Uzumaki blood + a 9 tail demon to be a living chakra tank for him
Dude. Gon is outright said to be a diamond in the rough that could've one day actually matched Merium. He is like every other shounen protagonist.
Maybe after like a 1000 years of training, like fricking Netero did? Either way he'd have to work pretty fricking hard to get there.
I dont see what you're getting at here. He was never going to get some sacred power boost that made him super strong by the time he grows up. Compared to say, Midoriya, who right off the bat is given 7 quirks
instead he got a sacred power boost when he was young to annihilate the catboygirl
Didnt they literally state that that is because he put on a condition so harsh that it multiplied his power significantly?
That was something that was explained anyone could do when kurapika was training. Actually part of the reason Kurapika is so strong is because he put on a condition that he is not allowed to use half his moves on anyone except a phantom spider or he'll die.
That was not Gon specific, my dude was just so pissed he'd throw his life away and perhaps even the ability to use nen in the first place to win that fight. They even had to bring in an bigger bullshit monster to bring him back to life.
we were never given the condition
> They even had to bring in an bigger bullshit monster to bring him back to life
the asspull
to undo the consequences of the asspull
True, we were not given the condition, but seeing as how big the asspull was and an even bigger asspull needed, we can infer that it had to have been a pretty harsh condition.
All we have to go on is the harsher it is, the bigger the boost. In any case, that was something told to us long ago, Gon was just the one crazy enough to do it.
it's still really really really really really fricking stupid
also bad writing
What part of
>nips are OBSESSED with genes
dont you understand? Like this anon
said, everything Gon is capable of is due to him winning the genetic lottery.
>Like how lightning is a firebending technique when it hardly has any relation beyond heat generation.
It's energy bro.
fire is a byproduct of combustion
lightning is the result of two electric charges
fire benders are really protonic and electric benders
To be fair both fire and lightning are plasma, so maybe that's the common ground allowing firebenders to manipulate lightning.
It's literally just stands and ki with extra steps.
nen is just "we wanted to ripoff jojo"
seriously, it's just hamon mixed with the stands
It gets even funnier because the latest arc of hxh moved on from hamon nen to literal stand users. You cant make this shut up and people were hyping this shit to come back for a decade
It's actually like "You have 6 different power systems and Nen lets you learn one of them."
>Enhancer: DBZ Kai
>Manipulator: Bleach Bankais
>Transmuter: One Piece Devil Fruits
>Conjurer: Jojo Stands
>Emitter: Avatar Bending
>Specialist: All of the above
Dragon Dive is pretty 'dakka' to me tho..
Maybe the transport dragon is his main Hatsu, good to always have a getaway vehicle in that career
>OP asks for good/unique power systems
>Posted the most unoriginal one in anime
Lol, lmao even
Can't stands and devilfruit do all that?
>Enhancer: DBZ Kai
Well you got one right at least.
despite being a harry potter expy, owl house atleast had an interesting idea that their magic circles appear naturally as part of nature
could be a good idea for a puzzle game, like the witness but fun.
The only power system I'm interested in is one that moves an army to decimate another.
WH40K
You may not want to hear this but the answer is Homestuck
>A system where we don't know what half the classpects do and the rest are vague and unexplained as shit
I don't care what you may say, inversion theory may as well be canon.
Yeah, still the best one.
No fiction can compete.
>"Strong"
>"Weak"
sound like bullshit, who the frick comes whit those names, lmao
The alternative would be to call them the "Colour Force" and the "Flavour Force"
Did anyone tried a elemental system with those ?
>Did anyone tried a elemental system with those ?
Ye
So intricate.
So interesting.
So interconnected.
If I didn't know the periodic table/study of chemistry was real, and I suddenly learned about the rules in a show, I'd call the writers talentless hacks for coming up with something so unbelievable
>so unbelievable
Come on, just look at those compounds, bro.
It makes more sense from quantmech point of view.
Drammaforce>Toonforce
>2 new narrative crutches
FTFY
Power systems are trash, period. Especially nen.
Togashi, like most mangaka, is a constant disappointment.
Battle shounen manga tend to be very creative, but always shit the bed.
Sure would be fun if anything fricking happened though, Togashi seems more interesting in jerking off complexity with zero development from it.
True. I started to see the flaws of DBZ and Dragon Ball thanks to HxH, how the death of characters mean shit, power levels are just goku/sayains screaming until they win.
Togashi makes very tense scenarios.
You didn't specify western cartoons or comics, so I'll continue to be eternally buttmad that we'll never get a quality MTG animation.
Huh...
Times like these I wish Worm were Cinemaphile
Isn't this the DnD schools of magic?
Missing quite a few. D&D is:
Transmutation
Conjuration
Divination
Necromancy
Abjuration
Evocation
Illusion
Enchantment
Yeah, sorry I meant more a subset. Emission feels like it's like Illusion, and then obviously there's one that's just dealer's choice. But the other 4 have a pretty direct comparison.
Emission is more evocation than anything.
They were folded, for example, Transmutation is part of Conjuration.
How is changing the properties of things anything like creating things from nothing?
Matter is energy and energy is matter. Conjuration is the process to convert one into the other through psychic energy.
And how is that related to altering the attributes of things?
hard power systems are kind of lame outside of shonen anime and even then those only exist because japan is obsessed with hard rules for everything and they jerk off hard when the protagonist breaks all those rules
whenever the west tries to do hard power systems you get schlock like sanderson's mistborn garbage that just reads like a bad video game novelization
the old "big three" shonens(one piece, bleach, naruto) all had a pretty rudimentary power system but since it was battle shonen, it's all dumbed down to just hitting shit as hard as you can to win.
GET OFF MY LAWN Cinemaphile!
Earth! Fire! Wind, Water, Heart!
>5 specifically defined powers
ok cool
>1 other power that could be anything
fricking ruined. what's the point of even having the other 5, why not just have everyone be a "specialization"
>OH MY RUBBER NEN
BUNJIE GUM
PROPERTIES OF RUBBER
AND PROPERTIES OF GUM
>OH MY RUBBER NEN.
> OH MY RUBBER NEN
funny thing is that wasnt as big as an asspull as
>Kurapika hate spiders so he can use all the super powers against them which is a pointless restriction because he wont be used in any other kind of story except those involving the spiders
When postmortem nen was established way earlier and we still dont know what are the consecuences of bringing yourself back as a corpse.
But I digress, say what you will about capeshit but when a run is projected to last 12 monthly issues it doesnt stretch itself with decades of hiatus killing whatever momentum the story could have.
anon, he's literally been fighting non-spiders for a gorillion chapters in the arc we're in right now
the real reason he's bullshit is that he makes up new powers way too fast when the old ones are too inconvenient
>Kurapika hate spiders so he can use all the super powers against them which is a pointless restriction because he wont be used in any other kind of story except those involving the spiders
Read the manga again
>with the occasional good story
false

Thats all I ask, what I cant stand is idiots pretending is le deep. For me JoJo is the ultimate "shut down your brain and enjoy it" show.
Terrorities were used during the Psychic arc right? What were wrong with those? It's been awhile but I remember them being straight foward and cool.
underrated.
>mfw the Uchuha Clan is a gender
lmao thought those were the Unknown from the thumbnail
https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Unown_(Pok%C3%A9mon)
"Visionaries knights of the magical light" had a pretty consistent magic system from what I remember.
But no one has infinite time and mental resources.
powers are bullshit

Dude, it's literally two characters with letters for names.
Frick off with your trash setting and trash plot.

Why? That's just what tranimes love, as OP proves.
Hiatus X Hiatus is not representative of all anime and manga they are often based on.
Western media doesn't have power systems, they occasionally have elements but that's it.
Western media is still at its creative infancy when compared to Japanese media.
All power systems ultimately devolve to my fartcloud is bigger than your fartcloud

Underlying premise for how powers are obtained/used is very good, power classifications and ratings are goofy at best.
>power classifications and ratings are goofy at best
Just what I expect from a bureaucracy tasked with managing and tracking superhumans. I remember getting a good laugh when at some point late in the story they just went "frick it, assume the worst" and gave Taylor a minimum 2 rating in every category to keep the response teams on their toes.
Changer and breaker are the same thing, Thinker and Tinker should be 1 category, and Master should be split into 2.

yu gi oh, it has a good power system, as long as the protagonist does not use "the heart of the cards" which is the synonym of cheating when the writer does not want the protagonist to lose cleanly.
Toon Force is just more truthful.

Stan Lee is a hack and this is one of the reasons why.
He's right, powerlevel homosexual.

Death Battle is capeshit/anime/video game brainrot.

Freakazoid has something beyond toon force, he's the co-director of his own show.

No. What show IS he the co-director of. That shit got canceled.

A fair tradeoff for such a mighty power.

>Is there an instance of comics not being written for <70 IQ shitwits?
>shonenshitters actually believe they're not moronic only because their favorite shonen explains every aspect in detail, ad nauseam
>also: "how do I read batman durrrr?"
You're no better than a capeshitter.
KATON: KAGEBUSHIN NO JUTSU
I mean oots is fantastic and Xykon's speach is a thing of beauty, but... the power system is dnd it doesnt really count for this discussion
I liked the talismans in Jackie Chan Adventures
Name a single power system out there better than Hajike
Sounds interesting. Are these books good?

Nen sucks.
I like stands as much as the next guy. Its an excuse to make really creative character designs and interesting fights.....
However Part 3 had a lot of stupid shit that never occurred again in the series and was immediately dropped after
>Every stand is named after a Tarot card, this is dropped in part 4 and never mentioned again
>Jotaro has the same stand ability to DIO and it is never properly explained why the two have the same ability and no 2 characters ever share another ability going forward
>Jotaros mother doesn't have enough Willpower for a Stand so it slowly kills her but a rat, a dog, a monkey, a turtle, a bird and even a sword somehow do?
has the same stand ability to DIO and it is never properly explained why the two have the same ability and no 2 characters ever share another ability going forward
I always, for like a decade assumed It was because The World was Johnathan's stand that Dio had hijacked and a similar stand was passed own to Jotaro through the stand equivalent of recessive genetic traits.
But fans have told me The World is literally Dio's stand so it is actually a complete coincidence.
Originally, the World was going to have the power of every stand.
If that's the case, then why is Joseph's stand a whip while his son Josuke had a punch ghost with a healing effect then?
Cringe
>no 2 characters ever share another ability going forward
false
The shot with Holly not being to handle a stand will always urk me after the baby, Iggy and RAT. It feels like a copout reason to have her in a dire situation.
Stand powers are repeated to a certain degree though. Little Feat and Goo Goo Dolls are the same power minus GGD's user shrinking herself but it's not out right stated she couldn't use it in herself.
To have a Stand you have to be at least a bit of an butthole and Holly is too pure for that.
Jackie Chan Adventures had a nice mix of Magical artifacts and Xiaolin Showdown similarly.
Since this thread is already kinda off topic, I really like Earthsea's name based power system. It's simple but still really neat.
Stone Ocean best part.
If you count books then Brandon Sanderson tends to come up with new stuff for every series.
Would the Miraculous from Miraculous Ladybug count?
>Each Miraculous user has a Miraculous (magical accessory) and a Kwami (creature embodying a concept)
>Transform into an alternate persona by having Kwamis go into Miraculous via transformation phrase

Ao3
/series/2342216
There's a lot of weird shit, but it helps the whole surreal bleak existential thing it's going for. Author is actually a channer. I found him in a short-lived fanfic thread.
I've read this bef-
>Right and Wrong Love
oh yeah
I meant in general. It's not just comics suffering from it.
>and then i sat there wondering how the frick modern professional western writing can't do the same
Because modern professional western writing is glorified fanfic writers, but with the added constraints of having to shackle themselves to a century of continuity and direct editorial oversight ensuring their stories can work as part of the undying shared continuity. Something like that would get editorialized to hell and back to fit whatever ideas the editor-in-chief has in mind for the shared setting, and nothing is allowed to simply stand on its own anymore.
>adventure time.
Complexity no, consistency yes, for the exact reason you described. If it's inconsistent then it's not cool and exciting when it's broken.
My favorite battle shonen are kinnikuman and toriko, and those barely even have power systems outside of a measurement for strength. Most characters powers work by their own established rules, which seems to work fine.
>"Specialization" is just ass pull
I always hated this
Specialization is mostly ability thieves and special senses like future sight or memory reading.

It's insane to me how little HxH there is relative to how long it's been published. I feel like I was just starting to feel some momentum and then I caught up. Meanwhile I've read manga that started publication years later, and ended as longer manga than the entirety of HxH up to this point.
You'd think the writing would be excellent given how long Togashi's had to mull it over, but no.
