What the frick are you talking about, dumb shit? Literally nobody puts him over Arnold, Stallone, even Van Damme. He didn't even peak in the 90s. Fricking moronic zoomer.

Van Damme and Seagal are on the same level - a couple of decent flicks in a sea of turds.
Stallone is Rocky and Rambo, he’s on a level way above the others

            rocky went the auteur route.

a guy like van damme would have been much bigger if he had allied himself with ufc or K1 kickboxing to give himself another dimension of branding.

Van Damme got hooked on coke and became hard to work with. Now he makes a good living still making money laundering movies with shady Eastern Europeans, much like Seagal.

segal, stallone, and Van Damme are all israeli. they are hollywood's answer to aryan superman arnold taking over the scene in the 80s.

Under Siege was pretty much one of the biggest movies in the 90s. It had a trove of actors in it which VanDamne movies did not have.

I would argue that Segal was bigger than vandamne but that martial arts was way better in blood sport

I would absolutely put Seagal over Stallone and Van Damme

It's not really worth putting anyone over anyone else, imo. Stallone made a pivot into higher action and Van Damme's movies always had an otherized fish out of water quality.

Segal's movies had a distinctly American bent to them. Highly multicultural and usually following Segal as someone worldly and ex military.

Van Damme's movies age well as you get older because you appreciate the martial arts more. Stallone's because you appreciate risks he began taking as an actor.

But I definitely appreciate Segal's dedication to a visual style of martial arts movie. His movies have a vibe and he fits an archetype. It's a shame he couldnt just relax a bit and integrate himself with Hollywood more, or he could have seen a resurgence similar to travolta or Kurt Russell.

Arnold won out because he was able to take the piss at himself first. Sly and Van Damme took themselves too seriously. Somehow Arnie still ended up being the most badass. By far the best filmography through that era.

            Anonymous

I don't disagree, but it's tough to say Arnold won 'because'. Arnold was always going to win. He's the most fun.

If you have a twin that's been raised in ireland, and you two both go to a bar, he's going to get all the girls you two talk to. That's just how the game is made, he's going to project the most 'fun' even though you both are identical.

There is also something otherworldly to Arnold being able to just put himself out there, almost selflessly. Stallone does it as well, but his finest example is in the Rocky series, where he is an aww shucks everyman compared to Arnold's perennial superman.

Someone made a thread weeks ago about who ultimately had the better films, arold of stallone. Arnold wins. He's got hit after hit after hit and his image is incredibly versatile. He got directors to believe in what he could project. They saw something and ran with it.

But Rocky is such an incredible achievement that it's hard for me really give all the praise to Arnold. And all the movies are fricking great. Stallone kept the same character through what? 3 decades? He basically created an American Anime that touched on everything while being sincere and bringing violence and spectacle in a very american pastime.

Arnold is the bigger character. But I deeply respect Stallone for working to cement Rocky in the zeitgeist and delivering consistently with such earnestness in a business that's pretty shallow. I also love that Carl Weathers is part of both Arnold and Stallones shared universe of 80s macho brizance.

I also respect that Stallone never settled for being a gangster. He is in Rocky, he's a collector, but more of a galoot, closer to Brando's character in Waterfront than DiNero. Even his returning mafioso turn in his new show is played for laughs. Dude's a good guy and enjoys playing them.

By the 90s, Stallone and Schwarzenegger stopped being the premier action stars they were in the 80s, so we had low-rent stars like JCVD and Seagal filling that niche to lesser success.

        Anonymous

I dont think anyone 'stopped' being anything, the movies were changing. Both Arnold and Stallone had action hits in the 90s. What people began from big screen action was growing. Under seige 1 and even 2 are great action films, but Arnold started doing stuff like True Lies which is probably one of the strongest action comedy films ever made, and Stallone was doing Cop Land and Assassins with Antonio Banderas.

Segal never made the jump because he was selfish instead of selfless. He was in clear and present danger and killed off immediately, which, as a kid and a big segal fan seeing that movie with my family, my first metal gear solid 2 kick in my ass moment.

Segal was a handsome guy. Hes also visually interesting in that he can present damn near any race, sort of like Brando, sort of like Billy Zane, sort of like that mongoloid Tito Ortiz, and sort of like that one half black looking guy who plays a football player in that old ass show.

dude should have kept in shape and loosened up to what hollywood was about beyond the scope of his specific hustle.

Imagine Segal in a movie like Collateral. I like Jamie Foxx, hellofa talent, but I felt like the movie itself could have been better on the whole with someone a bit more grounded in reality. There are certain emotions and insecurities foxx doesnt project imo--good for him, but bad for his characters.

Imagine a Collateral where Tom Cruise walks by Jamie Foxx's cab, but Foxx blows him off, and he jumps into an older Steven Segal's cab instead. Indian charms and shit everywhere.

It would have been fricking brilliant!

And Segal is freaked the frick out over the murders, trying to talk himself out of even being there. Imagine Segal playing scared, an actual coward for a bit, not in control.

Then imagine Vincent loosing his briefcase and Segal slowly showing glipses of old Segal as he has to pretend to be Vincent to get a copy of the names and locations of the rest of the list.

Imagine a reverse Executive Decision where they list Jamie Foxx and have him to press as a favor to Mann for Miami Vice, but Segal shows up on the red carpet opening night.

Do I think it could have worked? Anything is possible; if Segal were a different guy he'd still be in hollywood instead of eking out a film with direct to video.

Imagine Segal doing a 'segal run' through the final building while cruise does his Cruise run right after him. Poetry.

Seagal agreed to be in the film without reading the script, assuming he would be the lead. If he had known his character died so early he would have said no.

Always thought Seagal's sensitivity in above the law was interesting. He weeps for his dead friend. Opens with that compassionate speech. Practicing religious and politically conscious in a not annoying, looking out for his neighborhood way. He has a jimmy stewart earnesty in that movie and the beanpole physicality to match it, which is definitely unique. Never seen anyone talk shit about aikido and not be some ufc larper. It looks stupid, nobody cares if it doesn't work irl, but it's good on film and Seagal is straight breaking stuntmens necks risking lawsuits just for the art of moviemaking. And everyone was on that lame karate shit until Seagal broke in. There's a direct lineage from Seagal's upclose wrist locking shit to the prevalent style of choreography today. And it was all him and his ego.

      Anonymous

      Good fricking post.

I think a lot of Seagal's genuine love gets mistranslated because it came from his ego. Imagine loving your art, but not knowing how to communicate that love beyond ruthless demonstration. Almost like he's trying to end anti martial art or anti akkido debates before they happen by kicking every ass that shows up on screen.

I wish he had been a part of K1 or other organizations early on. He could have learned healthy ways to communicating his love of his art with others who loved theirs, and entered into a more expressive teaching phase of his life earlier on. And been in more movies.

I would have loved to have seen Seagall and Jackie Chan in something.

Seagal was a breath of fresh air in the action genre. Gritty and violent with grounded stories. Compare that with Chuck Norris's cornball trash, Van Damme making his ninth movie where he's in an underground martial arts tournament, bloated Arnold 90s slop like The Eraser, etc.

Hopefully Seagal learns to cut loose a bit more and come out of his shell. he comes off really goofy to a lot of people because of how seriously he takes himself.
his videos with jesse enkamp were refreshing to watch, he looked a lot less stiff showing some of his stuff to the youngsters and having an actual conversation with them, even if his bad qualities did bubble up occasionally.
