A laugh track is an audio track containing laughter that's added onto comedy shows that didn't have an audience but want to pretend they did. A real audience isn't a laugh track.

            >A real audience isn't a laugh track.
You're talking about "canned laughter," which is stock audio added to a programme.
A live audience is recorded, and that audio is the "laugh track."
Don't make me walk you through this obvious thing.

They literally tell the audience when and how hard to laugh. They do multiple takes, people aren’t going to laugh naturally at the same joke every time. How are you morons this dense?

when people criticized big bang theory's incredibly obnoxious laugh track, CBS media-blitzed on the difference between their laugh track and other laugh tracks. now people actually think "live studio audience" reactions aren't scripted.

Not sure, but if I had to hazard a guess it's because S7 seemed to be more of a comedy-drama at times. Maybe they thought the laugh track sounded too goofy with some of the dramatic moments?

Series 7 and Back to Earth weren't filmed with an audience because they both had so much location stuff.

As a kid I liked all the stuff with nu-kochanski but rewatching it as an adult you can see how little of a shit they all give and its depressing after knowing Barrie left basically cause they writers were twats to him. Still some great episodes though

      Anonymous

they fricked up incredibly hard writing in rimmer leaving the crew to become "ace rimmer" I was palpably pissed while watching recently and the new kochanski is so incredibly bad and she has 0 chemistry with any of the crew even lister falls off because he doesn't have anything to bounce off AKA rimmer banter, the only saving grace is kryton and even then kryton alone couldn't carry it, so fricking disappointing.

Barrie couldn't do Red Dwarf because of a scheduling conflict with The Brittas Empire and TBE was the stronger show for the BBC so it took priority.

    rimmer left?

Kind of but not really, he appeared to be written out in Smoke Me A Clipper but he appeared in 2 out of the 6 subsequent episodes in series 7, then he returned and was in every episode from series 8 onwards.

Shutup will you haven't even finished

  13. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

Yes. The Lister/Rimmer relationship was a vital part of the show. Without Rimmer, it went to pot. The loss of Rob Grant was also a big factor. Most of series 7 wasn't funny, and it felt very different. Series 8 tried to bring back the Porridge in space angle, but failed to recapture the magic, and also wasn't very funny. Back to Earth was terrible. The Dave years aren't perfect, but as they've gone on you can tell everyone's gradually gotten back in the swing of it. But it has never really been the same.

it's best to think of series 1-6 as the entire run of a flawless original show and 7 onwards as some wacky reboot that has nothing to do with it.

That weird ass mini-reboot where Kryten is suddenly a crew member at the start of a season is a pretty big flaw.

they always used canned laughter for old BBC shows like this. the sets were cheap and cramped and there was no room for a studio audience.

rule of thumb for old school bri'ish comedy is that if they don't show you the audience, it's probably not there.

Nope. Don't know why people keep saying this about Alan Partridge too. People complaining about the laugh track when there isn't one.

        Anonymous

live studio reactions are recorded by different devices than what records the actor's performances, it is its own "track" that will be primarily "laughter," the various "tracks" are then mixed together for distribution/broadcast.

Series 1-6 are peak uk sitcom perfection

7 is weird, a massive tonal shift due to a the move to shooting on film and Rob Grant exiting the show. Has its moments but still a steep drop in quality.

8 is Men Behaving Badly in space, absolute garbage except for the 'Cassandra' ep which is actually quite good.

Back to Earth had potential but squandered it with weak writing and performances.

10 was surprisingly good, and 11/12 are almost great. Haven't seen The Promised Land yet.

      Anonymous

11/12 definitely benefited from being shot together. Though not on par with the very best of the show, it really feels like they managed to get into a good rhythm. It feels right in a way that some of the other stuff didn't.
The writing lets Promised Land down a bit. Given how long the Cats concept has been brewing, it should have been stronger. Not bad, though.

it went to shit when rob grant left. suddenly the characters start acting inconsistent and moronic, and the plots get unbelievably stupid (ie: lister is his own father, kryten is PMSing all the time and sabotages the ship out of jealousy, etc). he tried to shake off rob's 'restrictions' and make the show in his own image, and the results are embarassing.
the show should've ended when rimmer blew up the time drive.

When I was in primary school my home room tutor knew I was into this show and he'd leave a different VHS in my cubby hold each week. One day he stopped and I asked him about it and he got real nervous and said "....I can't do that anymore" and it was then I realized this guy was likely a pedo who wanted to smeg me. True story. Still a great show
