Yeah I watched it last year and it drops in quality in season 3 or 4 I don't remember, gets too silly. There's a point they give up on Christopher's character and that's when it nosedives

What do you mean give up? Chrissy was always a fricking moron, the consequences of his choices simply add up at a certain point.

Then you weren't paying attention to how moronic both of them were.
Tony laments early in the series that he knows that he joined the mob as it was degrading. Chrissy is fricking stupid and should never have been made, but the current crop of associates are all similarly trash, so they made the best of a bad situation and recruit him anyhow.
He goes on to get addicted to heroin, making him a target for FBI arm-twisting; he dates a moronic b***h and then makes her into the front man for a mob business, a role that should have gone to an expendable, not his future wife. Would Tony make his wife into a mob front? Would Carm accept being mob front? No.
Tony says that in the old days, Chrissy's drug use would have gotten him killed, but Tony's weak, and the mob is degraded, so Chrissy gets another chance.
Tony cleans up crying-b***h ass Chrissy's mess when he confesses to Tony that Aid is an informant. The old mob would have killed both. Chrissy gets another chance.

Finally, after three strikes, Chrissy's luck runs out when he crashes the truck.
              Degradation.

Prohibition was the beginning with high profits, but the era itself was incredibly miserable and dangerous with gang wars out on the streets. During WW2 and after untl the 1954 it was the most profitable period with minimum notoriety and all the benefits. After Apalachin it was a tickling timebomb before american mafia was uncovered on national television and all ranks were purged from shitton of people.

                >More than 60 underworld bosses were detained and indicted following the raid. Twenty of those who attended the meeting were charged with "conspiring to obstruct justice by lying about the nature of the underworld meeting" and found guilty in January 1959. All were fined, up to $10,000 each, and given prison sentences ranging from three to five years. All the convictions were overturned on appeal the following year. One of the most direct and significant outcomes of the Apalachin meeting was that it helped to confirm the existence of a nationwide criminal conspiracy, a fact that some, including Federal Bureau of Investigation Director J. Edgar Hoover, had long refused to acknowledge.

                >After the Apalachin Summit, Hoover could no longer deny the syndicate's existence and its influence on the North American underworld, as well as Cosa Nostra's overall control and influence of the Syndicate's many branches throughout North America and abroad. J. Edgar Hoover created the "Top Hoodlum Program" and went after the syndicate's top bosses throughout the country.

                >As a result of the Apalachin meeting, the membership books to become a made man in the mob were closed, and were not reopened until 1976.

NTA but The Apalachin meeting was a meeting of high ranking mob members that the FBI either tapped or had informants in or raided or some shit. Basically they got caught with their pants down and it put the mob back in the main sights of the government

This. Meanwhile the Mexican cartels saw what happened when the Americans invaded Afghanistan. With cells operating independently so even if the Americans caught a terrorist and tortured him for information, it barely made a dent to the organization at large, and the Mexicans copied that structure. If one cell is taken out, it's no big deal because they have a thousand other cells that remain unaffected and which have no clue what the other cells are doing

1980 things were on the downslope but overall things were ok from 1990 forward the mob has had to seriously lie low and switch to more white collar crimes. They can't have the same presence of street goons and small business shakedowns that they used to

I've never managed to catch how big of a family it was, because there are only like 6 recurring characters in their office and each captain is supossed to have his own crew, but then they have the same pair of Chrissy and Paulie going on most wet jobs even when both of them are capos later in the series. And even characters who were in 2 or 3 episodes have their own guys like Feech and Lorraine in season 5.

        Anonymous

The show could afford to cast minions for Feech and Lorraine because, like you said, they were only in a few episodes anyway. Casting minions for each member of the main cast would have created the expectation among fans to see those minions all the time, and juggling that many recurring minor characters would have been a logistical pain in the ass. Having the capos do their own dirty work was unrealistic but it's in the same spirit as movie characters never wearing helmets in battle scenes; you just have to accept it for what it is and roll with it.

there are 6 crews, about 50 made men split up in there that we don't see or barely see. then 150 associates. the strangest is barese who is the biggest crew and they are almost completely absent in the whole show. the New York homies had five times that in a family.

The show could afford to cast minions for Feech and Lorraine because, like you said, they were only in a few episodes anyway. kind of. its also just because all of them are expected to generate their own value out there on their own for the most part unless the manpower is needed. none of the shit that chrissy and paulie do needs anything substantial, and they get jobs gifted to them because of their status. we also see a lot of shit relevant to tony or from his direct point of view. its still moronic we don't see many lower guys though.

The more I think about Sopranos, it wasn't a very coherent show, a part of it is that they wanted to make it feel more grounded in the sense of life itself being somewhat random but they genuinely went nowhere with most of their plotlines.

The show is funny and enjoyable, but not a masterpiece of storytelling.

      Anonymous

      >but they genuinely went nowhere with most of their plotlines.
That’s life. That’s what I liked about the writing. More often than not things don’t just “wrap up” in real life.

        Anonymous

Sure but life is boring most of the time, good storytelling skips the boring parts or recalls them only to prop up the more interesting ones. Sopranos wasn't really boring per se with some exceptions, but you can tell characters arc were made up as they were going. There was no "big plan" to it, which reflects life, but is not great for telling a story.

I fricking love the Italy episode, its a hackneyed tv trope to send the cast on vacation, but the whole side plot about Paulie is gold. Discovering that to real Italians he's just any other ignorant American who doesn't understand the culture and his attempts at integrating is met with eyerolls. His whole Italian identity is shaken, it's hilarious

Steve used to be really into the No-wave scene in NYC, he'd go to shows and hang out with fricking SWANS.

Its really a shame that Sopranosposting fell victim to the same groups that regularly coopt Cinemaphile memes.
