Anyone else think humanity has run out of original ideas? I thought the Lighthouse was really good, but upon further thought, I realize it was just okay. It SEEMED great at the time because for the past 20 years, everything has been so abysmally dog shit, it was a palate cleanser. Everyone is living in the past to some degree. Which is why 75% of movies/tv are remakes, and Zoomer/Millennial culture is LARPing like you're from another decade (see Stranger Things and Y2K fashion)

last interesting mainstream film
Humanity has abandoned God.
No wonder his films are kino
Current neoliberal world order doesn't value originality. Things will change this century when the USA led unipolar world collapses.
>Anyone else think humanity has run out of original ideas?
nah that's a very boring, unoriginal view that gets repeated a lot. thing is that we've arrived at a time with the internet and phones where information is very easy to access. a person can now google "what film did the shawshank redemption rip off?" and they'll get 100 good links about cool hand luke
there once was a time when the only people who could make comparisons were nerds with knowledge. and they wouldn't be tempted to make insane comparisons that are unfair to things they like

good example right here of how the view comes from pol zoomers

It is a combination of all of the above, but its mutually reinforcing because:
>all accounting is digitally accessible and not making Impressive Numbers means your other numbers go down and you lose money
>This will get you fired over time, selecting for only the most risk-averse actors in the marketplace
>As the collective level of risk-aversion goes down, demonstrating Proper Risk Aversion to the stakeholders who do things like select studio bosses means individually reaching more and more extreme levels of risk aversion
Globally, tighter accounting has generally made corporations much more risk-averse since the 80s or something. Higher competition (competition increases with information availability) means that you also edge out small actors, leading to
companies are just so risk-adverse today. as much shit as boomers get, they had a lot of creative types. gen Xers largely in executive roles are soulless knobs that only care about money
Yes, and they used to value small projects more.
It's just technology today with algorithms and online trending data allow you to predict success easier. And those are always based on previous trends, and the formula almost always works. From a business point of view, it's a risk-free way of making money. Back then they didn't have that chance, so they took some risks to make money. It wasn't a virtue that made them more creative.
This is because every story has already been told. What stands up is the way you're telling them and that's why The Lighthouse is good. Story wise, it doesn't bring anything new to the table, but the acting along with the cinematography both carry the movie.
You realize that's not even an original story, right anon? Not even the first adaptation as the shit in picrel came before it.
That isn't an adaptation of the unfinished poe story. And if you read the poe story you'll find the lighthouse 2019 is basically an original story more inspired than adapted from the story
>original ideas
you realize it's a re-telling of the story of prometheus right?
>prometheus
you realize it's a re-telling of the story of grug right?
dont post anymore bro
> they canceled Grug 2: Even Bigger Rock but the tale of Prometheus still got greenlit and told around the fire
Originality died in 10,000 BC.
The teenager expert who has watched 300 shitty Hollywood movies has spoken. Thank you for enlightening us with your advanced knowledge
No, the problem is good or interestingly new ideas don't make it into what we think of as the mainstream.
There's "new" everywhere, it's just that it's all segregated away from what is considered acceptable, or profitable.

Congratulations on your 20th birthday! Now that you've now seen the majority of what cinema has to offer, it's time to get a job
What is this if not the bleeding edge of entertainment? You tell me.
WHY'DYA SPILL YER BEANS?
The story is like about me and my dad.
Looks like I'll have to register an account.
>Looks like I'll have to register an account.
It's not so much that they ran out of ideas than that they execute them formulaically. It's all hero's journey bullshit.
Companies have learned that playing it safe and retreading old ground pays just as well if not better than trying new things.
As comforting as it would be to have it all be the fault of some secret evil bad guy you can defeat, the truth is that business and viewing trends reinforce production decisions. Studios simply react to what made the most money recently. We’re gonna keep getting cynical remakes and retreads until they stop making more money than risky new ideas.
>Everyone is living in the past to some degree. Which is why 75% of movies/tv are remakes, and Zoomer/Millennial culture is LARPing like you're from another decade (see Stranger Things and Y2K fashion)
Part of this is actual societal collapse and yearning for a better time
The other part is that companies will only fund something that has a PROVEN market, i.e., there is empirical evidence they can make money in the form of others already buying that exact product.
>And who is this gentleman?
Do you want to say that he is me, and I am him?
LMFAO. Frick no, I can think of at least 5 original ideas off the top of my head that would make for interesting stories. Hollywood just doesn't wanna take a chance on original projects because they are relying on past IP that was successful to generate similar box office success
