YouTubers who ultimately made a point of specifically not covering the sort of media that made them popular? I assume all of them start doing that after a threshold of popularity.

Funny thing was that the troony was actually far more respectable than Linkara since he refused to accept she was ever a man or talk about it, while she outed herself the second she broke up with him and admitted she only waited that long cause Lewis kept being squirmy about talking about it. And all this despite evidence that this super christian ultra-feminist dude has fantasies about being a futa wiener gobbler. Shit is weird.

I watch Linkara cause that all we had back in the day in terms of BIG comic videos (You did get lot of unscripted dudes with mics and picture of the thing they're reviewing like Blowshimselfupdude who funny enough Interviewed Linkara but his videos are gone now but anyways) and took lot of what Linkara said at face value but after awhile I realize he was full of shit lot of the time and his hate of 90's comics always rub me an guy who grew up on cheap back issues of lot of 90's stuff the wrong way too. Also storyline stuff was just idiotic and fact he wasn't really playing a character just made it worst and once, I fell off on him and learn about all his craziness later.

Same. I wasn't too into American superhero comics, especially since I didn't have ready access to them being in Europe and all. But his videos, even when he was mocking them made them seem fun, and he'd often compare the bad one to a good one that he reccomended. That's how I got into 52, first on a pirate site and then bought all 4 volumes. Since then I've probably spent over 1000 dollars in both physical and digital american comics, though that slowed down in the last 5 years to a trickle.

He was my introduction to Blake's 7, which is something I'm grateful for. It is one of the most bizarre scifi shows I've ever seen, fluctuating between moronic and brilliant, often within the span of minutes.

And this is Cinemaphile-related, because Blake's 7 very clearly inspired Farscape, which was pretty blatantly ripped-off by Final Space.

I kinda get it. I used to be into writing, and when I looked for content on YouTube I wound up with what they call "booktube", and it's 90% young, conventionally attractive, liberal, middle class women who were all way into YA (but have probably moved onto a new trend by now). It's like nearly the entire goddamn community consisted of clones, and the better ones generally had less of these clone traits. The worst thing was that so many of them were self-styled advice channels, giving advice based on zero experience, which they often couldn't even follow themselves in their shitty, self-published Fantasy garbage, the shilling of which was the point all along.

Consequently, I don't want women's opinions on writing anymore, at least on YouTube.

Do either of you know where the "Let's go back, let's go back" thing started? I know that gets said in several videos, but I don't know when it started, and I don't have the time to go to the very beginning and watch everything in order.
I'd also like to know when they found out what Black Bolt's name was, assuming that was actually brought up in a video where they go over the plot of something and not just something that happened and they bring it up sometimes in videos.
So do either of you know either of those, or am I just wasting my time by asking you?

It was just something Sal would do to indicate a flashback was happening and it stuck around.

Yeah but it doesn't inject into his videos, it's the same with like his opinion being rather flat and to the point and he doesn't lay it down as law like lot of Youtubers.

Huh. I just see the recommended channels as big red flags to me on what type of channel it might be. Might check him out later. Thanks for the rec.

This is tough because I can't seem to think of anyone in the comics youtube sphere that's similar to RLM.

Like to me RLM's thing is that they took what 00s Channel Awesome and others were doing and improved it by a mile, in spite of their own flaws and biases.

    >Cartoonist Kayfabe generally cover a lot of different stuff. But they are clearly artists into cartooning and while they have interviews/interesting stuff, there isn't depth nor is there real discussion on the modern comics or anything outside their wheelhouse.
    >Strip Panel Naked are better for more indepth analysis of comics medium.
    >Comic Tropes is alright for more general stuff.
    >Near Mint Condition is okay if you basically want a catalogue for "what is coming out" and which new editions are releasing but he doesn't really have actual opinions.
Avoid Youtubers who do fricking wikipedia redenditions of whatever Marvel comic event they have decided.

Strange Brain Parts (even though he frequently doesn't know what he's talking about)
Comic Belief (even though he has shit taste)
ComicSamurai (most of his videos are collector nonsense, but his "hidden gems" recommendation videos are excellent)

PulpSecret was the very first comics channel on youtube all the way back in like 2007 or 2008 or something. They abandoned that channel before long and switched over to a new channel called ComicBookClubm which, incredibly, is still going and they post regularly. Now they're like in their 40s and still posting multiple times a week. They must have genuine passion for this shit, because in all this time they have UTTERLY FAILED to cultivate ANY kind of following. Their videos get double-digit views and it doesn't stop them. They actually have interviews with industry pros, yet it does NOTHING to boost their views. Make of that what you will. But I think they're worth mentioning for being the OGs.

Another "how the frick did this last so long" comics channel was Pete's Basement, which was apparently the SECOND youtube comics channel (after the above mentioned guys). It's a dude from New York named Pete who'd review new comics each Wednesday with him and his friends sitting at a round table in his basement. They were usually about a half hour long and all done in one take with a single camera then uploaded the same day. They start around 2008 or 2009 or thereabouts and continued until the shutdown in 2020. That fricked them over HARD. Without new comics coming out they had nothing to discuss and even once new comics started coming out again they never really got back into the old habits. They tried to keep the channel going with various comics content (mostly interviewing writers and artists of ULTRA OBSCURE indie comics), but they never really had a regular release schedule again. Haven't posted since last year, so it looks like the channel's dead unfortunately.

    Also, anyone remember ComicBookGirl19?

I like when Chuck from SFDebris does the occasional comic series, but more for his historical recaps than looking at the comics themselves. His series on the Transformers being created was fun, and his one in the 1990s Marvel implosion was pretty good. It's also endearing that he was a longtime Spiderman fan who dropped the series with ODM. Plus, the man has strong "I just want to grill" energy.

For the most part I just watch Comicpop and Comicstorian to keep up with new stuff and hear about old storylines.

And by extension Absolutely Marvel and DC.
But episodes with Hassan just keeps getting more insufferable I feel. Like he keeps using "appeal to emotion" arguments for why things are good and people who don't like something are bigots.

I generally like people who talk about what's coming out and do trade reviews like Omar over at Near Mint Condition though he's sort of become a shill to keep game going but even then he does a decent job of letting you know what's in what book. Otherwise it's generally just cliff notes for people who don't want to read comics.

Comics youtube is a joke. And I imagine this thread is going to be deleted now that I mention one of the few relevant channels in existence.

Ya boi Zack for being the only relevant voice
Comics by Perch despite being milktoast
Matttt just kinda popped up but doesn't cover comics, just the safe creator shit.
Casually Comics is the same shit except just batman, superman, and wonder woman retreads.
    Linkara was never relevant.

There is no "Red Letter Media" because that would mean there were comics worth reading and discussing for non-drama reasons.

Yes, the guy who did porn.

The fact that he is still the most relevant voice in comics youtube shows just how shit it is. The channels that do more views them him talk about nothing but Batman and Superman and even then its just retreads of old stuff. You've also got "review channels" that are just piracy where they show %90 of the comic with "commentary" on top (ComicBreakdown, I'm looking at you).

The worse part is the excuse: Nothing else gets views besides Batman and Superman

And that's why comics youtube is trash. Hell, Comicstorian is the biggest but even his crap turned out to not be self-sustaining. Corrupt Comics Tropes has fled to manga. And Linkara was never good.

          >The worse part is the excuse: Nothing else gets views besides Batman and Superman
          I mean...from what i've seen that's kinda true though.
Youtubers have to do the more popular characters like Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man because they're guaranteed views in order to do other characters or indie comics that don't do as well.

At least when it comes to their channel being a job and not just a hobby, because they have to make sure they can pay the bills.

Even comicstorian, who you mentioned, has talked about how comics like X-men and Iron Man just don't do as well as Batman and Spider-Man. Same for Indie comics like Nice House On The Lake or Radiant Black.

And unless they start getting a lot more money through Patreon it's probably going to stay mostly those same comics that pull in the views because he literally can't afford to not focus on those over smaller comics or comics he likes that just don't do well.

            Anonymous

            It's a self-perpetuating cycle.

Nobody makes videos on anything but Batman and Superman because only they get views.
Batman and Superman are the only videos available thus get views.
Nobody wants to make videos on anything but Batman and Superman because only they get views.

Add in that Marvel and DC on youtube don't separate their comics content from all the TV crap and you have a situation where the comic buying market can't see shit.

            https://www.youtube.com/@marvel/videos
            https://www.youtube.com/@dcofficial/videos

At least Image Comics' channel exist to advertise comics. And Boom to a lesser extent.
            https://www.youtube.com/@imagecomics/videos
            https://www.youtube.com/@BOOM-Studios/videos

But I digress, Marvel and DC are backed by large megacorps. Surely they can spend some money actually advertising comic books right? Right?

              >Surely they can spend some money actually advertising comic books right? Right?
