Not even a bad redesign
I can't get into sword and sorcery.
It's not for everyone. You almost have to be a Conan fan from childhood to like it
I got into Conan fairly recently, and it's not exactly entirely my jam, but I am perfectly capable of seeing the appeal. Especially since it's the actual guilty party for a lot of fantasy nerd shit that people seem to lay elsewhere, so if you've got various interests in fantasy, adventure stories, or DnD shit, you'll probably find something to latch on to. Hell, if some of the weirder Hellboy stories or spinoffs interest, you might find something worthwhile in some of Conan.
Going in with somewhat low expectations after all the shitting on Conan gets helps too. Not too sure about the various imitators, but the Conan comics themselves are very readable and some even had legitimately good scenes, not just "for a Conan" story.
It endlessly makes me sad that Robert E Howard killed himself thinking he was a hack when his stories still have such strong influences in the world almost 100 years later
Brilliance is never appreciated in it's time. What astounds me is how much he actually managed to write by the time he was 30. I hate to be the kind of person who says they're writing a book who never really delivers but I've been at it for ages and barely get anywhere.
>Brilliance is never appreciated in it's time.
That's simply not true.
That's my favorite aspect about him. He just jumped into the deep and end and started writing bizarre fantasy stories in rural Texas in the 20s despite everyone looking at him like an absolute loser freak and it paid off. I'm sure he was bipolar, but his manic desire to just do what he wanted and write his stories is inspiring
Yeah, it's actually inspiring. He just did it. As far as I know he had no formal education. Dude just straight up didn't want a normal job and punched out story after story.
He was full on an autistic guy living at his parents house playing in their backyard pretending to be a pirate on adventures and translated those fantasies into stories he sold to magazines. It was just pure autism power
Moore hates him cuz he ain’t him.
I really translate some of the meaning of Conan as a power fantasy character from his suicide, as in I see Conan as the ultimate will to life anti suicide character, what Robert E Howard created to try and keep himself alive.
It wasn't that weird to stick closer to home back then and he hung around largely to take care of his ill mother.
It was weird to make a career out of writing fantasy stories for magazines though
Thankfully people scan this old stuff
There's also DC's Claw
Claw is wild. A lot more sorcery than sword.
I'm pretty entry level but man nothing comes even close to Barry Smith Conan. I know people try to give Buscema his due but even he's not close.
I didn't like the early chapters.
a welcome break from the usual cut-and-paste isekai Japan currently sharts out.
No.

Nice
no
I've read a bunch of Kull and Bran Mak and the stuff but I never really got into Thongor. Which I always thought was a silly name. If you like Conan it's by one of the more famous Conan knock off producers, Lin Carter and De Camp.
