I just read up to the recent release and frick man this is a trip. More thriller than action but its pretty impressive how it rides the line of fantastical while potentially everything is special effects.

I loved the Kakugo no Susume manga, but your logic for posting it is really fricking dumb when it didn't need to be.
I was surprised just how competent it was. Just went in expecting it to be completely trashy with cool art, but it actually knew how to stick the landing with good fights and making characters very endearing. Shame the OVA never adapted the later parts.

All of Takayuki Yamaguchi's works are hard gay. Even the hetero sex is gay when he draws it. Good artist but the constant homosexual subtext is worse than Jojo.
People think it's trashy because the OVA only adapts the trashiest parts. When the majority of people who have heard of the series only know it for the grotesque fat dominatrix mutant who sewed someone's face to their tit and the other grotesque old man mutant with the serpent dick, it creates a certain perception.
Apocalypse Zero is one of the most hopeful and positive manga ever made so of course people only think of the garbage OVA.

The original Harara is released from his control by Kasumi, Kakugo kills their imperial japanese grandfather, and Harara uses the giant Buddha mech to bring life back to Earth.
The ending is so hilariously positive. Everyone is back, mostly the bad guys but they kinda had a point and seem happy now so never mind. Its extra funny cause as you read you wonder if this is WW2 apologia, is this gore porn, does the guy writing this have some weird hang ups. But actually no its almost wholesome.

I don't know if it's hangup or just creativity but it's definitely weird, the amount of the different monster dicks/veganas in his manga is impressive.

The main point is that kakugo is dressed as a imperial Japanese soldier and is using a armored suit made out of the flesh of the equivalent to unit 731 victims to protect humanity rather than use it to kill and terrorize like his ancestors. Basically the equivalent of a dude in a nazi super hero outfit saving israeli people and it’s pulled off VERY well.
If you guy want something similar to Kagugo no Susume, read Fortified School. Translations for it finished a couple months ago. You’ll appreciate it too if you like Devilman.

The manga seriously tones down the insanity pretty fast. It’s just the OVA only adapted the earliest parts where things are super disgusting and violent. I mean it still stays relatively batshit crazy and the gore never really tones down but things get a lot more normal as it were. You won’t see giant titty missiles for example
The later half’s where the general was performing experiments on captive humans was pretty messed up or vivesecting a pregnant women.
I can see why Harara was forgiven but some of his generals not really.
Oh yeah i mean it still borders on guro at times but compare that to the first chapters where you’ve got the skinned face nipple pastie and the old dude shooting glass cum at people and it’s almost quaint

It's worth noting Horie from AZ and Prototype are basically different people.
One is combat specialist that will chop your dick off with naginata and the other is a peace princess for hero to save and marry.
The author has his own Tezuka star sytem going on, he reuses alot of characters like actors in his manga.
Prototype is weird, Haoka is gay and is actually a good fighter and Horie is not only a fighter but is really mean to everyone.
Kakugo (Kamikaze or whatever his name there was) is a bit of a b***h too, driven by petty revenge and not afraid of brute force against defenseless people.
I honestly prefer Apocalypse Zero's more heroic personalities of everyone involved.

New meaning of a word doesn't always automatically render the original one obsolete, in this case it makes it secondary.
Toku still means what it originally meant, but when you say it or read it in 2023 it immediately associates with henshin heroes, live action or otherwise first and foremost.
