TPM looks alright. It has its moments. I don't think it looks any worse than ROTJ, overall. AOTC and ROTS look awful, though.

Yes. You can make almost anything look passable with a grid that exists to cherrypick frames, even Attack of the Clones (which you hilariously aren't defending for some reason).

Nta but if you take out the cringe forced romance stuff in AotC it's suddenly rather an amazing film.

Even in Empire strikes Back Leia's confession was seemingly out of nowhere but people bought it. I don't know why George felt the need to overstate it so much.

AotC is easily the most flawed but there's a lot of beauty in there also. 7/10. RotS holds up in every way, 9/10.

Christ man, I'm on your side with the prequels, the third is good but the first two are decent despite what the naysayers suggest. But the dialogue is bad at times, including the acting.

The prequels despite these flaws are better than the sequels.

          Anonymous

The "sand" line is pretty good in context. It comes after Padme tells Anakin about how she went to that dreamy place on Naboo during her childhood and how they dried off in the sand after bathing and Anakin tells her how he hates sand and all that and then tells Padme (who knows about his upbringing as a slave on Tatooine) that he likes the time he spends with her at that place on Naboo and then starts carressing her skin and getting her to kiss him.
He does a lot of that pitying stuff throughout the movie.
Later, when they bury his mother, he kneels down in the sand and squeezes some in his hand, right after a scene where he talks about wanting to become stronger.

Even though I like Neeson, shouldn’t gotten rid of Qui-Gon. Should’ve been Obi-wan an a teenage Anakin. Obi Wab was trained by Yoda, he says this in the original series! Not Qui-Gon! Also, a teenage Anakin getting feelings for Padmé in Menace would make more sense with him obsessing over her in Clone Wars

It's about Anakin losing a good father figure, being then trained by Obi-Wan (brother) and adopting Sheev as a (bad) father figure.

            Anonymous

I know what it means. Still doesn’t change the fact. Qui-Gon was pointless. It should’ve been Obi-Wan training Anakin. Anakin being born on same planet they hide Luke at was stupid. Anakin being a teenager and having feelings for Padame makes more sense than him obsessing over her when the last time he saw he was 10. In the original series Obi Wan said he though he could train Anakin as well as Yoda. Yet he didn’t chose. He didn’t want Anakin to be trained. He got guilted into it by Qui-Gon

              Anonymous

Qui-Gon also introduced someone being dissatisfied with how the Jedi order's been going without fully abandoning it.

                Anonymous

Again, something easily could’ve had Obi Wan do. Explain why he chose to train Anakin without council’s full support abs why he feels guilty at the outcome. But, in Menace. He didn’t think Anakin should be trained. Thought he was too
old only did it because was Qui-Gon‘a dying request

                Anonymous

Having Qui-Gon makes more sense so Obi-Wan would become a brotherly figure instead of a fatherly one.

Lucas was a visionary and dragged the entire fricking industry in his ILM wake. Everything has to appreciated in context and each prequel offering was upping the ante of what digital could accomplish in film. You shouldn't have to 'like' it to appreciate any of that.

    Dear Phantom Menace,

I saw you in theaters when I turned 11, and it was one of my most memorable cinema experiences. I'm sorry jumped on the hate bandwagon.

Phantom Menace was kind of crappy but I understand what it was going for, Jake Lloyd was the perfect Kid Vader and I hope the frickers that bullied him so hard he went schizo go to Hell. The whole point of the prequels was the increasing dread that this guy will become Space Hitler one day. It was kind of crappy but imo the prequels were supposed to feel like watching the 97 Berserk anime a 2nd time while knowing Griffith was actually the main antagonist the whole time. Lil Ani was perfect, knowing that the sweet little genius boy goes on to strangle motherfrickers and attempt to murder his son puts your heart in knots. It was the hook that made you think "but how?" Everything else sucked nuts.

Prequels are hard for people that are used to simple, straight forward narratives. They're not, they are supposed to be almost anthology-like, with an ending that everyone already knows. There isn't any new revelation to be found about the character by showing life before the fall.

Yes and no. It follows a pretty straight path when it comes to characterization.

It's choppy, and doesn't necessarily follow a consistent through-line. The time skip between AotC and RotS is a prime example. Nearly a whole galactic scale war goes by, in which our main character is a general, and it's glossed over how that actually effected him.
It's not hard to assume what kind of effect it had on him and his inner feelings, but if someone wants to be spoonfed then they can't follow along properly.

This is true, yeah. You kind of have to read these movies, if you just want to slop through them, you're gonna get filtered.

It's the same kind of brainlessness that makes people criticize Episode III with that lame take "he fell to the Dark Side because he had bad dreams" thing. like not only would anyone who was basically a slave that got turned into a child soldier that turned into a warlord have nightmares fricking 24/7, but the previous movie showed him having nightmares about his mother's death that turned out to be based in reality. He was telepathic enough to know his mother was in danger for real and he couldn't prevent her fate, so obviously he'd know his wife was in danger for real yet there's still a chance to save her if only one single person around him
(who kidnapped him and sent him to war btw) would listen to him. It's so simple yet misunderstood that I think we deserve the capeshit that came afterwards.

Or at least, general audiences deserve them.

There's much more. Loss of good father figure (Qui-Gon). Gets adopted by Palpatine in a sense, who is a bad father figure. Torn away from his mother (leading to mommy issues).

Mother dies, takes mommy gf for wife. Strong possessiveness. Everything around him starts to break apart. Anakin doubts himself as a jedi, Padme doubts whether the Republic has lost its integrity, Sheev makes Anakin doubt the integrity of the jedi order and the ways of the jedi, Windu makes Anakin also doubt the integrity of the jedi order. The jedi order makes Anakin doubt Sheev.

Meanwhile Anakin strongly fears the death of his wife, mirroring the death of his mother. At some point he says he feels lost. His already unstable identity is pushed to a breaking point by Palpatine's machinations.

And with all this turmoil knowing it goes against what he's been told all this time, he seeks out Yoda, the wisest guy he knows, for advice. Yoda says "everybody dies bro don't even worry because you'll die too one day" Sheeve says "I hear you man we can stop it if you really want" except Sheev was grooming him into becoming a hard ass monster man that could be easily manipulated. It isn't complicated even.
I disliked most of the Clone Wars cartoon because it retroactively spoonfed a lot of what you were supposed to catch yourself but I liked when it'd add context to how shitheaded the Jedi were. Obi-wan had a secret relationship too maybe a son.. he knew he was Anakin's closest friend and faked his death without telling him specifically to make him sperg out.. Jedi actually fricking despised Clones by showing the status quo with Krell..
Some of it was cool. But it was all right there in the movies if you pay attention. They emotionally abused him nonstop and were shocked he turned against them.

You don't understand. What I'm saying is that there's an artful commitment to hackery in the Star Wars prequels. When Yoda "whips out that little laser sword of his and goes to town" on Count Schlockula, what we're seeing is an anti-artist's inelegant non-statement. The white elephant has died of starvation and the termites were trampled beneath its feet. It's an artistic desert, background noise for six year olds fidgeting and finding new places to stick their boogers. So too has Lucas, and we have found where he stuck them.

It was garbage. One of the major problems was that this cast didn't have any chemistry. Original Star Wars had good chemistry between Carrie, Harrison and Mark. These guys didn't have any real bond or affection for each other at the end of their journey.

    >Apologize to Phantom Menac

Its a good film, lots of great imaginative visuals and ideas. It has too much baby Anakin in it though. Anakin competing in the pod race should have been the end of him playing a big part in the story. Having him blow up the droid control ship pushed him to the point of annoyance.

Having Anakin hide from the attack but end up being confronted and instinctively using the force to protect himself and his friends could have been kino. The visual of kid Anakin getting angry, instinctively force choking some dude out and then breaking into tears would have been kino. Anakin yelling "Yippee!" after he Mary Sues the droid control ship and kills everyone on board wasn't a great moment.

As with all the prequels the foundation for greatness is there. You can see how a few tweaks here or there could have matched the quality of the originals. A stark contrast to the soulless Disney sequels that are so fundamentally uncreative that no amount of tweaking could ever get them past the point of mediocrity.

George was incomprehensibly redpilled about Hollywood from THX1138, I don't even consider him a sellout because he gave it all to Hollywood when he felt in his heart that nobody wanted to hear what he had to say anymore. I wish we could have seen the microscopic world his weird ass used to rant about but the audiences weren't ready. Wish he'd make a new movie of any kind but I wouldn't give a frick either honestly
