This. The fact that the prequels weren't recognised for more technical awards showed that something odd was going on. He always considered himself a Hollywood outsider and as soon as he got "frick off" money he exited the studio system entirely which is why I suspect they resented him.
I believe both Gary Oldman and Steven Spielberg had to decline working on Star Wars movies due to guild rules. For the same reason Richard Marquand is kind of a nobody, they couldn't get anyone who was a member of the directors guild to be involved.
Hollywood is a cess pit and Lucas is one of the few filmmakers who managed to succeed without it.

I was always a prequel defender and I never spoke bad about Mr. Lucas. I think he was treated very unfairly by Disney and I hope that his creative spark gets re-lit so he can make something better than Star Wars without Disney's involvement. I know he's happy living a quiet life and making little experimental films for himself but I think that as a man of his talent, he has a responsibility to share it with the world and give our culture a new modern myth if he has it in him.
