Honestly it was pretty funny, and a very good call. The characters exist to spite the audience and, frick it, backstory episode makes them absolutely essential to the plot.

Doc and Jackson’s spite is something special. I like how they made a hot goth girl fans wanted to see again and pointedly ignored her existence

No, but it seems they considered this explanation for her deep voice early in the show’s run. Picrel comes from the art book and says “Dr. G as effeminate boy. He’s cute.” They probably decided against this because it’d ruin the joke of her just being a woman with a fricked up voice

Do gay people find him or the Alchemist funny? Because honestly the whole gay innuendo jokes were a bit overdone in the later seasons imho.
i've honestly wondered that myself because they are really on the nose with how gay they are in almost every scene (shoreleave in particular) and often times rather vulgar.
Do gay people see stuff like that and think 'you go girl!' or do they see it more as a stereotyped caricature?
I like Shoreleave and Al, they're snarky and clever gay, but you also don't see them involved much in gay culture which can be obnoxious.
Early Shoreleave was peak because the fact he was gay wasn't his sole character trait. He was a capable super soldier that just happened to also be gay. Later they kind of Flandersized him and "he's the gay one" became his entire character.

My favourite character is Rusty himself, so pathetic and has so much fricked up shit happen to him and so much trauma, and then those small moments of competency that start elevating him more and more as the show goes on
