The original is a beloved classic but as far as most people are concerned that itch has been scratched forever and the Burton version was already redundant. This one is more a contractual obligation movie, after flash, black adam, shazam 2 and blue beetle i doubt wb was expecting to make any money back. You can tell cause no marketing went into it.
WB fully anticipated all of these flopping. They already announced the end of their universe project so these were just expenses they didn't want to cancel.
I can't imagine the usual practice of doubling the production budget to find the break even point applies to the last few DCEU films, Warner knows they're dead in the water and haven't spent much at all on marketing. If the final gross matches the marvels, or at least comes close, then I'd say aqua man wins

I couldn't bring myself to hate this movie, it was fun, it was stupid, it wasn't woke or hated its audience. I don't know why it bombed when normies ate up Venom 2, but they waited way too damn long to release a sequel, and hardly introduced any new characters, so the ads just made it seem like a rehash.

Women only watched Aquaman to self insert as Amber Heard and imagine themselves getting fricked by Momoa and/or Patrick Wilson, but Mera is barely in the movie and Amber Heard is too controversial to easily self insert into.
Movie also lost a lot of its novelty factor and using the secondary villain from the first movie (+ "the spooky ancient blob of evil") as main antagonist is lame. People don't give enough credit to having cool antagonists in capeshit when they are always 50+% of the show. And especially for DC stories, where the heroes tend to be kinda bland, you usually need good antagonists.
Tl;dr: movie needed a better villain for Black Manta to team up with, and they should have either recast Mera or shamelessly left her in a bigger role. They made a movie that appeals to nobody.
