Arcane is now canon in the lore.

It seems confirmed, they are merging main lore with Arcane, so it's no longer its own thing. So good luck getting any champion to die in season 2.

Mantoddlers are adults. The anime version of the genre is aimed at grown men. The western version is aimed at literal children with shit like DCSG.

Does anyone actually give a flying frick about the lore in that godawful game? Seriously, it's a clusterfrick of "wouldn't it be cool if" pitches, with no reason or cohesion.

No one honestly cares about the lore. It’s just something Riot keeps throwing out for some reason.

I won't be surprised if they finally go through with it in the continuity of Arcane. Their constant teasing has to compel the writers to do something with them there. They are both very popular characters Riot has been neglecting outside of selling skins. Besides we could get some fun adventures out of it like an Indiana Jones movie.

          >lux x jinx
the sibling issues are what really do it
and the contrast between a kind-hearted, traditionally-styled mage and a steampunk, graffiti-core punk gets the opposite attracts crowd hard
the wild rift trailer also shows jinx granting luxs wish to go out and fight monsters, meaning theres one universe out there where they meet

          >lux x ezreal
really popular with the old crowd, since they were all but outright stated to be dating
and are alive and well in alternate skinlines like star guardians

          >jinx x ekko
timebomb is not so subtly supported by many riot employees and they have an enemy thing going down

          >lux x jinx x ezreal
jinx and ezreal are some of the most popular ADCs in the game, and they have some really good synergy with lux who can cover their fragility with her W and give them easy access to CC to hit tricky targets with their R

You could easily make the case that Jayce and Viktor didn't invent hextech in Arcane, but instead innovated and built on existing, though much more rudimentary, technology. There. Now Camille can have existed with hextech before Jayce.

                Anonymous

Wan't Jayce introducing it in the first episodes? Thought the crystals were known but no invention left the prototype phase before Jayce.

I think they'd just overhaul the game lore to match Arcane and let the latter do its thing, no one cares about flavor text anyway long as the character is still playable.

                Anonymous

Jayce was messing with hextech in the first episode. You could say Jayce invented it, or you could say it was a niche and secretive technology that already existed. I mean Jayce didn't invent the crystals. And when his workshop was discovered people automatically new what Jayce was dealing with.

Arcane piltover was magic phobic, and while ingenious hextech is mostly seen as a developmental dead end until Jayce.

Game Jayce was like Steve Jobs, who revolutionized hextech but definitely not the first in nor the master of the industry. Case in point Vi's gauntlets retconned into being from Jayce.

It seems blatant obvious after Project L incorporated Arcane's character designs instead of the default League ones.

Good Seraphine was always shit and Skarner was under-developed. The only downside here is whatever retcons they apply to Camille, who was a well-written champion.

            >reworked out of reality
            Poor Skarner.

That whole original Seraphine lore should've been what they stuck with. Being able to *hear* a Brackern soul sing inside the hextech crystal? Being able to communicate, and coming to some sort of agreement with it to prevent the mistakes of the past? Everyone else finding out their Hextech is built on the soul crystals of a fallen race and that they're still alive in there? The absolute fallout of that? I wanted that story so bad. I wanted to see Seraphine eventually discover Skarner and realize that his voice and the voice in the crystal resonated the same. It was such an interesting setup, and we threw it away for generic pop idol, and now I feel just a little backstabbed by Arcane too as a result of this new lore reset.
I was so excited for all of that possibly happening from the moment Seraphine's original story released, and then they backpedaled, and now years later they've retconned it entirely.
The crystal scar is now metaphorically upon the lore itself, and it is weeping.

Kinda? it was really just a hodgepodge of different shit coexisting, and it really isn't until recent years that riots have been trying to tie all these shit together. Arcane being canon does require major rewriting on certain characters and lore like Ekko and Heimerdinger (and Yordles in general). League has slowed down its short stories and lore reveals for a more multimedia approach

Ekkos' backstory was a lot more lighthearted with him being a happy go lucky kid enjoying his time powers (with the implications that his friends purposely would kill themselves so that Ekko would save them). and him trying not to disappoint his parents while in Arcane, he's a hardened gangleader orphan.

Heimerdinger was supposed to use a human disguse because Yordles are hunted down and Yordles don't live side by side with Humans but in Arcane we see Yordles in the background just chilling.

I mean, the human disguise thing was never brought up again since that comic. Poppy was able to wander around Demacia despite being a magical creature. Legends of Runeterra shows a statue of Heimerdinger in his yordle form outside the university of Piltover. Most agree Riot quietly retconned the glamour years ago.

while the Glamour thing might have been quietly written out I do want to say that Heimer and Poppy are exception to the rules. Most Yordles are still hunted and even one of the recent cinematic confirmed this.

There is another Reddit post they made implying they will kill off characters. Their physical presence in the game will probably no longer be a hindrance. It won't be like what they did with Gangplank where he was removed from the roster after he was killed off. The game is just its own bubble now as Arcane shapes the lore. Also, they plan to add more large scale conflicts we have never seen before.

What further fueled the theory that the lab rat is Twitch was that Riot edited his splash art to give him shimmer colored eyes. His lore was also very outdated and devoid of content. It would be easy to insert him into Arcane as another life touched by Singed.

most people assume that the shimmered lab rat is twitch
singed somehow survived the explosion, so its possible that the mutant rat did too and is now prowling the sewers of zaun, learned to speak common tongue, learned ninja martial arts and poison making like an evil master splinter

Also Claggor’s googles are the exact same as Twitch’s googles.

              yes.

What further fueled the theory that the lab rat is Twitch was that Riot edited his splash art to give him shimmer colored eyes. His lore was also very outdated and devoid of content. It would be easy to insert him into Arcane as another life touched by Singed.

ever since the twitch visual update, his splash had those eyes

    >It seems confirmed, they are merging main lore with Arcane, so it's no longer its own thing.
    and thats a good thing

many of the characters lore was always kind of vague to begin with
and some like singed didnt even have any concrete backstory

arcane easily provides the most in-depth and detailed accounts for these characters and you would be crazy not to make it the official version

      >some like singed didnt even have any concrete backstory
This. For Singed, the writers of Arcane wanted to explore what agenda he could have had behind his research. I do hope they keep his involvement in the Noxian invasion of Ionia.

This is not a surprise. It was the first exposure to League for a lot of people, and it has the most consistent narrative out of anything Riot has done with the IP using multiple characters. Newcomers would be expecting the lore in Arcane over the isolated short stories that barely advanced the overall plot that much. Riot wants to appeal to more people and the show goes beyond the base game.

is this the "it's canon because parallel universes" excuse or did they retcon it hard since anybody who got into league lore (lmao) found Arcane to be the gateway drug for it? because honestly it works either way since Arcane is better at expanding the backstories for every character there despite how incredibly edgy it was

Hard retcon. In a recent development video explaining in more detail they said Arcane is the new origin story for hextech. This is making Riot doing a rewrite for Camille.

you're right but league devs as well as league's audience has changed. Pretty much all the Institute of War stuff, including the lore and old art/assets is considered crap by new players; who really don't care if it's any better or worse they just want something new.

Honestly this is for the best. The problem I've always had with LoL is that it was way too "corporate mandated positive energy and any villains are saturday morning cartoon tier". I'm not asking for Shakespeare, but Overwatch has the same shit and it is so soulless how nobody is allowed to do or say anything that wouldn't be on brand. Arcane is appealing because people and situations are genuinely shitty, and the conflict feels genuine rather than cartoonish.

God, you fricking late arrivals are cancer.
That’s not old lore Warwick, that’s his in between.
Original lore Warwick is when his champion tag was “the death maker”. He was Singed’s mentor. Together they created the most horrible nightmare chemical weapons for Noxus, and they were national heroes. Soraka in Ionia was healing the wounded of the war, but after a certain point, 90% of her patients were caused by this 1 dude, and even her divine magic couldn’t cure them because of how fricked up the magi-chem toxins were. She broke her do-no-harm vow and lost her immortality just so she could curse Warwick with lycanthropy and make him pay.

THEN came Warwick “the blood Hunter” where he was a bounty hunter and friend of Singed.
Finally we arrive at his current lore (“the uncaged wrath of Zuan”) where he’s Vander but experimented on.

old lore WW was singed's master
and he pushed all his apprentices to their literal breaking points and singed was the only one smart enough to be resilient against it
And then he turned into a werewolf because soraka got so butthurt treating the victims of all his poisons and shit that she gave up her connection to the stars to curse him
New lore several iterations of trolling soraka as a bounty hunter and being cursed from it
Nu-new lore is being mutated by singed.

This is a good thing. League of Legends always had inconsistent lore. I could never understand why people seemed to care so much about it when Riot themselves couldn't be bothered to.

Arcane provides the perfect starting point for a complete rework of the lore. Riot knows that more and more people are going to be attracted to the world because of the show and it would be weird if the League and any future games weren't in line with what Arcane established.

Also, this means that League Jinx and Arcane Jinx are the same Jinx, which further means that Jinx canonically becomes happy again. This is a wonderful thing because she deserves happiness.

No, this is awful, Riot should not be trusted with Riot's lore as they are built in mystery box and story implication bullshit. Jinx and Vi were designed as rivals, NOT sisters. It's Arcane and Arcane's writers that took the outright de-confirmed theory, put their foot down and made them being sister the crux of the story, going in spite of Riot's approach to storytelling, they had a story, not implication of having a story. Retroactively, under the condition of unified lore, it might end up a cage for someone to try to go outside of lore established by Riot, the storytelling will be done only through them now, and before Arcane they've done nothing but bullshit, and they sure as hell aren't going to suddenly start making anything but bullshit.

I don't see how that goes against what I said. League has spotty, inconsistent lore based around the Rule of Cool. Arcane was an attempt to make sense of it all, and it was hugely successful, so Riot would be foolish to not use it as a foundation going forward. Maybe just have Arcane's writers be the go-to lore consultants from now on in order to ensure consistency in the future.

          >League has spotty, inconsistent lore based around the Rule of Cool. Arcane was an attempt to make sense of it all, and it was hugely successful
Yes, we agree on that both, here's what my point is
          >so Riot would be foolish to not use it as a foundation going forward.
Yes, once again, absolutely agree. They just announced they are doing the exact opposite. Now League and Riot will be attempting to make sense of it all and Arcane will have to adhere to it.

Ideally, I imagine that in Riot's head they should just sort of iron out and tie up any minor lore loose ends, but in reality, more often than not, this control over several medias by one entity never works out and just limits the possibilities of what could be done with them and sometimes even ruins the story not to create any more loose ends or contradict the lore. Think about it from the opposite end, if Arcane was written with only what Riot had established, it wouldn't have been possible for Jinx and Vi to be sisters.

            >They just announced they are doing the exact opposite. Now League and Riot will be attempting to make sense of it all and Arcane will have to adhere to it.
That's not what I took away from the announcement. And, even if that were the case, Arcane has done very well so far being its own self-contained thing and I doubt whatever Riot has planned in the future is going to affect the next season (which, people have to remember, has already been written). What happens after that is anyone's guess, however, but I don't think doom-posting about it is very productive.

To me, it seems as if they're finally realizing just how poor their worldbuilding has been since League's inception, have acknowledged it, and are now making a unified effort to have it all make sense.
            >Think about it from the opposite end, if Arcane was written with only what Riot had established, it wouldn't have been possible for Jinx and Vi to be sisters.
It's possible that a good story could've come out from that.

              Anonymous

Anon, I am not doomposting, this is merely logical conclusion Riot itself had acknowledged and all but confirmed. They are in control now and Arcane can't contradict Riot, they just don't understand how better writers are now worse from it either out of stupidity or arrogance.

              >It's possible that a good story could've come out from that.
Again, great point. However, in an instance where Riot lore makes it not a good story it's now impossible to go against it, which limits your storytelling possibilities objectively by half at least.

While that's an awfully vague statement, I don't see how that led you to your conclusion that Riot will somehow influence Arcane. Really, this statement seems to imply that the opposite is more likely, i.e., the character development in the show will be reflected everywhere else, which is a good thing.

It literally didn't because it wasn't canon to the overall LOL and Riot's lore, it was an adjacent adaption like what MCU is to Marvel. Now the Riot says Arcane will have to adhere to THEIR rules directly and all storytelling will be done by guys who are trying to pull this shit for the fourth time already. Not once they gave me confidence that they can pull it off and now they are just getting Arcane, one good thing they had least to do with, join the fold.

That's what we on the outside looking in assumed. However, I don't remember anyone at Riot stating that was the case, and now we have confirmation that it's not.
Now it really seems to me as though you're just looking for an excuse to be angry. I'll be the first to tell you that Riot sucks and Arcane was the best thing to come out of League since Jinx herself, but I just can't get behind the idea that the direction they're now taking is somehow wrong. I'm all for having a consistent universe, at the end of the day. Will they frick it up? That remains to be seen.

They will frick it up, how can you browse Cinemaphile and not have seen this before. Such consistency is hard to pull off for something within its own media (Marvel comics, DC comics, and now MCU is imploding on itself and can't juggle both movies and TV series at the same time for shit and its continuity has been a jumbled mess for years now). And now Riot says they can pull it off with games and TV shows, when games had nothing but shitty lore, and Arcane was better off in spite of LOL lore, not because of it. It's not that it's impossible to pull off, because looking back, no one thought MCU could work, when it ended up working, at least financially. I am saying Riot definitely can't pull it off and will end up messing up Arcane by binding it to games. What makes sense in X media, rarely makes sense in Y media, and in this case X media wasn't good to begin with.

I have a question for you, then. If all of the Champion characters in the show become what they are in the games, will you accuse Riot of meddling with the writing process?

In an instance where it doesn't make sense, of course. For example, imagine if season 2 just starts with Jinx being besties with Lux because it worked so well for marketing! And since it worked so well, despite them never even meeting in canon before, Riot decides to make it canon and now Jinx HAS to have Lux best friend in Arcane! She definitely ended S1 for exactly this kind of quirky funny relationship!

                Anonymous

Well, that example is funny given that they've already let it be known that Jinx is going to have "friends" in S2. Whether those friends will be Lux and Ziggs or some totally new characters remains to be seen, and I doubt that she's just going to have them without any explanation.

She becomes happy in the sense she goes so insane that she doesn’t even think about her past sadness and anger.

More like she learns to have fun with the chaos.

If Arcane makes it work, then by all means, Arcane is doing good job, Riot isn't impeding on anyone else's creative processes and by extent doing a good job themselves. However, historically, cross-media serialization has never worked. What do you get when you do that, you get fricking Matrix (with Path of Neo and Matrix Online, and Matrix Online is reason why Lawrence Fishburne was spared from Resurrections), you get Defiance (remember that shit?), hell, it wasn't the sole problem, but you get Jesus in Walking Dead the New Frontier, the worst season in Telltale series with most fricking pointless comic book character appearance shoved in for no reason other than marketing.

What if Arcane ends up writing a story where the only conclusion that makes sense is that a game character dies, what then? Rewrite the story and avoid all stories where game character die? Or piss off players for the sake of consistency like Riot did with Gangplank. They were already burnt on that shit, you think they are going to do that again?

I feel like any decision they make for the sake of consistency is going to piss someone off, so the goal shouldn't be to please everyone. Ideally, they should let the Arcane writers tell the story they want to tell and then go from there. On top of that, I think we're going to have to accept that Riot clearly wants the world of League of Legends to be more than just a game, with the game itself being on the same level of canon as a quick match in a fighting game, which is none at all.

                >I feel like any decision they make for the sake of consistency is going to piss someone off
That is exactly what they set themselves up for by making Arcane canon rather than be adjacent adaption. It's going to happen, it will happen, it's just a matter of when.

                >so the goal shouldn't be to please everyone
Completely unrelated goal to making a unified or adjacent cross-media canon. It's not about pleasing people, it's about allowing creative freedom for Arcane writer and not having conversation about who they can't kill or what they can't do on the table at all.

Arcane being canon is something I've always wanted, so they aren't pissing me off. It being separated from League just creates needless confusion, if you ask me. Working yourself up over this when we've already established how awful the lore has been is, again, pointless.
                >It's not about pleasing people, it's about allowing creative freedom for Arcane writer and not having conversation about who they can't kill or what they can't do on the table at all.
We seem to be going in circles now. The writers have already made it clear that they're going to tell the story they want to tell, which is likely going to be what Riot uses going into the future.

                >Yeah, Lol lore is shit, I am so glad now Arcane is canon to that shitty, worse lore!
Stop putting words into my mouth. If Arcane is canon, already that means drastic changes are going to have to be made to bring League of Legends in line with that. Much of the old, shitty lore will be wiped away. For example, everything regarding hextech will have to change, which means timelines and the origins of certain characters will have to change as well.
                >Gosh, it's so confusing that TV show isn't exactly like video games, now it's so simple, now you just have to follow both video games and TV show for it to make sense!
That's like saying someone has to play Warhammer 40,000 in order to understand the setting of Warhammer 40,000, and given that GW is doing their own cross-media thing, that's clearly not the case.
                >Why would you ever trust them?
Where did I say that I trust them? Arcane being canon ensures that they have a foundation to build off of. If they want to make a consistent universe while acknowledging Arcane, they'll have to take all of the changes Arcane made to the lore into account. That's not me "trusting them". That's me pointing out the obvious.

Oh, I'm aware. I'm just explaining my stance. Anon is clearly looking for something to be angry about, though, which is par for the course on Cinemaphile.

And I am pointing out the obvious to you, again. Season 1 was written with luxury of not adhering to the LOL canon strictly, Arcane being canon to LOL is a bona fide retcon, and Arcane season 2 and any subsequent season would have no such luxuries. So when Arcane made changes to LOL lore than needed to be made because they are better than LOL's shitty lore they were allowed to, and yes, Riot will absorb Arcane's changes into Riot's lore, however, they can't be doing that with every subsequent season and retcon game's lore every time Arcane needs the lore to change to yield better writing, now that Arcane and games are canon to each other indefinitely they can't be not canon to each other, because that's not how S1 was written.

Warhammer 40000 is actually a great example of what I don't want them to do, because Warhammer 40000 IS a fricking mess and Black Library both allowed retcons that are genius and complete bullshit and it only causes a fricking mess in the end. So having Arcane as its own little thing is much much much more preferable, yes.

Look, I think we're just going to have to agree to disagree. I don't think what you're saying is going to happen and you don't think that what I'm saying is going to happen. As it stands, it's far too early to tell what shape this new phase of the lore is going to take. I, for one, am really only looking forward to S2 of the show. If Riot intends to build on that going forward, great. It won't make me want to play their shitty game again, but great.

As was I. I'm just so sick of the kneejerk "NEW THING BAD" response that everyone seems to have to anything these days. When I saw the statement in the OP, my mind didn't immediately jump to the conclusion of "this is bad because Riot Games is bad". Instead, I thought "this is good because Arcane is good". These are two completely separate and largely unrelated responses though because as I view it, Arcane is the new thing and I am telling you new thing good, while you are telling me it's good that they are going back to old game. Frankly I don't blame people for having the viewpoint; if something new was assumed good by default because its predecessor was good, the remake epidemic would be lauded, not shunned. Riot just wants to add real life myths from different religions into their fantasy world. The Shuriman gods are the Egyptian gods. Taric is literally Zeus. Diana didn't even get a name change. So when

Legends of Runeterra adds too much unnecessary bullshit. It fricked up Kindred's basic backstory.

thinks Riot fricked up Kindred's backstory, it really wasn't surprising or unexpected that Riot would do that. Kindred is two of the American gods afterall.

The issue I have with Ascended is that it adds a layer of depth that is completely unnecessary. It's not limited to Shurima; this problem also exists with Targon with the Aspects(as well as some other characters).
I can understand that Riot wants to have the concept of gods and myths in the world they've created as some other anons mentioned, but they way they've restructured a lot of the characters to have some sort of connection or motivation related to it makes things way too complicated.
Characters used to have their own motivations and reasons to do things. Now, it seems that a good amount of them have been concentrated around a few ideas. A lot of them lost their uniqueness with these changes.
That's what I don't get I guess, is why they went this route with the lore. It's complex but without a real purpose.

Pretty much. Shit used to be able to just exist in a vacuum away from one another which would allow you to make actually novel tales off their interactions with peoples, ideas, and institutions that were foreign until the Institute of War brought them together. I remember fanfictions about fricking Poppy and Trundle or Karthus and Irelia, characters who had thematic similarities that were only interesting to explore when they're strangers. Or just the journals of justice like Blitzcrank's matchmaking.
Now nobody interacts with anybody outside of their pre-approved set of characters in boring and predictable pre-approved methods

I don't understand your hang up on Ascendeds. It's a simple premise:
                >In ancient Shurima there was a ritual to turn into a demigod
                >If you were worthy you became an Ascended
                >If you weren't worthy you got destroyed
And they use that premise for simple backstories like "The strong brother was willing to be destroyed to help his weak brother ascend" and "The slave risked being destroyed to get power to take revenge on the pharaoh for not ending slavery". Riot has definitely done some moronic retcons like turning Varus into a darkin controlling a gay couple, but for the most part I don't think the Shurima ones were bad. Nasus' old lore was just "He's an alien and he got summoned".

    >everything is canon
That doesn't make any sense, the point of multiverse shit was to sell more skins without the constraints of main lore. Arcane is now the main canon? Cool, but they are stories from LoR, Riot Forge, and the old lore that don't fit with Arcane canon. They should be more specific with how are they going forward instead of just speaking on broad terms in a short video.

No, I think Riot will incorporate retcons to make Arcane's S1 make sense within LoL's lore, however, Riot will make sure no product with same amount of freedom Arcane had will be possible from now on. So Arcane won't be able to write something like Jinx and Vi as siblings unless Riot explicitly confirms it first.

I am guessing that whatever things were glowing on Mel in the last moment of season 1 will tie into whatever her inevitable abilities are. Likewise, as we know, many champ pipelines are at least a year long and I imagine Mel would be closer to a Support character. If true, I think a good sign of her becoming playable would be whether we get any new Support champs around the time season 2 debuts.

Also, I am enjoying the new reworked Skarner. I’ll miss his whole crystal-theming, but the new wall-charge ability and rock throw looks super neat.

Arcane doesn't have a comic moron. Vi's backstory is 12 paragraphs long. Her other story is 16 paragraphs not counting dialogue. League never had lore. There's no single player campaign, no story mode, nothing. Arcane is literally the first time we're getting actual story. Beginning, middle, end with details and depth.
Arcane isn't based on LoL, it is the story in LoL. There literally was nothing before.
