Are cartoons not for boys?

I know this is the wrong website to be complaining about female protagonists, but after the disaster that was the female showrunner led 2010s where emotions and girls were in the spotlight, the "best" and most talked about cartoons in our current decade are... girls dealing with emotions.

What is it about characters displaying awkwardness and insecurity that fascinates the female mind?

We have a serious problem with males having no media made explicity for them, both in cartoons and in general. We have media for girls and then media for 'everyone'.
It's also true that boys like cute girls and if you give them fun or likeable personalities they will often enjoy their shows. But people who are into more masculine products have been abandoned, at least by the big studios. And very young kids need role models and characters who resemble them. Parents who care about their boys have nothing to offer them but older media.

yeah it's pretty shit. When Anime is the main carry you know shit is grim.

Men make for shit protagonists because they can't be emotional without looking like pussies. They only work for a hardened badass characters like John Wick, or villains. When you're making a cartoon, you need a character that can cry and look pathetic without being off-putting, so your options are either a teenage boy (not gonna fly in the West, we hate kid protagonists) or a girl. So the choice is kinda obvious.

        >but they do not take off as much.
The biggest cartoon on CN ever in terms of money made was an action cartoon about a 10 year old boy.
No, cartoons for boys don't take off anymore because cartoons in general don't take off anymore, because they killed their industry by not even trying to compete in any market outside of the autistic man/womanchild market and the baby market.

Appealing to the adult baby audience IS what killed cartoons. They abandoned their actual audience. As good as it was, Steven Universe should have been crippled before it got a chance. Same with Bee & Puppycat.

Rack up debt and pay increasingly higher taxes and get killed by Black folk, the rest of the world will eat your lunch as the bankers groom them into the next generation of boomers. Pretty soon you'll be paying a mountain of worthless dollar bills to afford bread, and when you inevitably rebel and get defeated you'll end up a footnote in history. The next Hitler and his Nazis, devils without any sympathy. No one will care because you were always the fertilizer shat out to nurture what comes next. They don't need to cry all the time, they need an option to do so. A young boy can get sad and emotional. A girl can get sad and emotional. But if a guy gets sad and emotional, he's gonna be turned into a meme online, and your story will fall flat on its face. Men can be smartasses, badasses, or dumbasses, but not wimps (unless it's a comedy).

I strongly disagree. This is a 21st century standard. A lot of films depict men crying and mean it with full sincerity. The dwarves in Disney's Snow White, George Bailey in It's a wonderful life, the boys in Stand by me.
This idea that men are broadly ridiculed for crying seems to have been fabricated recently.

Your perspective is skewed because it's based on a measurement that doesn't actually reflect the breadth of society at all. It's like saying that racism doesn't exist because there's a lot of successful and critically acclaimed movies with black people in them.

The pendulum swung too far in the other direction and this does show that the people complaining about a lack of female representation didn't want equality they just wanted more stuff made specifically with their interests in mind.

There's less male protagonists in cartoons than there were before. But, overall, guys are being really under-represented in specific areas. There's way less father/son relationships than father/daughter relationships. There's less queer representation for guys. Guys aren't being written as emotionally supportive anymore. Honestly, if you're a male voice actor, practice your villain voice because that's the easiest role for you to land right now. Just expect to get killed off at some point. Because redemption arcs are for female characters.

Take into account that little kids need role models. This includes boys. An adult man can perfectly enjoy a manga about cute girls doing cute things (they're often published in magazines aimed at men) or watch a movie with an action girl because they like the actress, but kids need to self-insert. And even men will probably miss the more masculine media of years ago, like the Stallone movies. It's something that just isn't being made anymore and could perfectly exist along with other things.

There are cartoons made by men for boys/men but they do not take off as much.

Look back when cartoons were "for boys" they were in a unique position where boys were just the best way to make money. Girls grew out of cartoons faster and thus were less valuable. I don't know why, they prefered whatever they were doing instead of watching cartoons. It's not that they didn't make girl cartoons its that they didn't take off nearly as much and the one's that did had higher boy appeal like Jem and Holograms.

I don't know the economic reason reason but now it's girl stuff that takes off. Boys are doing something else besides watching cartoons. Probably gaming.

      >but they do not take off as much.

How do cartoons make money now asays? Is it mostly merch or ads/streaming company?

          Anonymous

Merch. Legacy media companies funding you. Government grants.
Indie YouTube animation makes very little

Yes. Boys exist to work to support women, they shouldn't be sitting around watching cartoons, they should be looking for wives so they can serve their every whim.

A rational male would just obediently serve women as he's supposed to.

Real men watch (pop) history animations on YouTube. There is nothing more manly then watching animated squares slam into each other till the sound of glass is heard.

lol what are you copying this from your reddit thread or something?

It's likelier for boys to watch a show about a girl than girls to watch a show about a boy, that's just a fact.

How far in the past does this go? I remember a fair amount of MCs being everymen at best and sorta losers at worst in the aughts

Some cartoons are for boys but it's just that most of the time cartoons with male MCs just isn't the same as in the past anymore. They're usually either loud and obnoxious or weak and lame nowadays and boys rarely look up to them and thus the female side character shines more.

Watch as this thread, a thread blatantly made just for political seething and playing armchair psychiatrist hit 300+ replies while threads that want to talk about animated shows/media die at 20

Watch as that happens and tell with a straight face that Cinemaphile is a good board

They will also insist they are better than reddit and become hostile. Which does talk about cartoons.

Think of it more as a containment thread for people who don't actually come here to talk about Cinemaphile stuff so other threads aren't plagued by the same bs
That said, sometimes good stuff comes of it. An anon compiled like 30+ recent shows with a male protag in order to BTFO the OP and a few of those seem worth looking into

I know the troon boogieman keeps getting thrown around but it's true. Media is now made for women or people who think they are women. Males are vilified and aren't allowed to be the center of attention anymore.

Boys hate feminists but they like girls just fine. Give us cool/cute/relatable/awesome female leads and I won't complain

I just want writers and critics to stop shitting on male leads, not letting men be men is plain shitty
