Doubt it, but I will never fault someone for giving Luchador movies a shoutout. They’re so awesome.

    Any personal favorites? I love
    >Santo and Blue Demon vs. Dracula and the Wolfman
    >Santo in The Diabolical Axe
    >Santo In The Wax Museum
    >Santo vs. The Martian Invasion
    >Blue Demon

I tried watching a couple of them, but my zoomer attention span/lack thereof was turned off by how drawn out they are, I know there are more modern ones, like ones from the 90's starring Octagon Atlantis, & Mascara Sagrada, & even one from 2001 starring Hijo Del Santo, so if those ever become available subbed/in decent quality I'd absolutely be interested to see how the genre changed over time.

      >I know there are more modern ones, like ones from the 90's starring Octagon Atlantis, & Mascara Sagrada, & even one from 2001 starring Hijo Del Santo
I didn’t even know that. I hope someone subs those.

My favorite era of Luchador movies were the black and white Horror ones, like Santo in the Wax Museum, the first few Blue Demon movies, and Diabolical Axe. They might be a little slow, but the atmosphere is perfect. It typically feels like a horror/sci-fi film that plays out and then the Luchador saves the day, and there’s a classic feeling to them.
The colored movies kind of depend. There’s some good ones like Dracula and the Wolf Man and Operation 67, but stuff like Death Night and Champions of Justice are too meandering.

I didn’t even care for Santo and Blue Demon vs. The Monsters, honestly. I know it’s one of the most famous, but I wouldn’t even put it in Santo’s top 20.

Santo & Blue Demon VS The Monsters & Champions Of Justice were the ones I watched so that explains alot.

I get that people say they like them for le maymays, but in reality they’re weaker entries outside of “Santo fights a cyclops” and “Luchadors fight super midgets”. They were in that weird era of Luchador movies where they started just shoving in a lot of musical numbers and padding everything out even more so than some of the earlier entries.

Like I said, I think the best ones to start with are Wax Museum, Diabolical Axe, Martian Invasion, and Dracula and the Wolf Man. That right there gives you a full spectrum on the approaches the genre did.

Tried watching Santo & Blue Demon VS Dracula & Wolfman, & like the other ones I tried watching it came off as, how do I put this, very dry & stoic, is there anything a bit more uh...flashy I think is what I wanna say?

              Anonymous

The hunchback slitting someone’s throat and pleading to the forces of evil to resurrect Dracula wasn’t flashy enough for you?
Or the magic dagger killing that same hunchback for his greed?
Or Santo and Blue Demon fighting a bunch of werewolves and vampires in a cave?

Or at least faster paced, because maybe it’s just my zoomer attention span, but these movies REALLY take their damn time!

yeah they're usually kinda slow in a vein similar to old b movies

Titanes goes as far as the 60s, that 2001 match is from the final year

neat, I only knew it was old and I think I heard it had a revival at some point, wasn't sure if it was like EMLL/CMLL and still running wild after all these years or if it had inactive periods like NWA or what
but yeah iirc legends are that it was a HUGE influence on Pena's leaning hard on the gimmicks like the clowns and parkas and clowns

there was one with Fantasma Jr (iirc not Hijo Del Fantasma) around 00 or so too
iirc Masked Republic said a few weeks back they're making a production company to start doing new ones

keep in mind "company says they're starting a thing" is a long way from a finished movie, but yeah I'm hopeful

finally getting caught up on the last Triplemania, there was some little Jimmy that came out with Psycho Clown who had Bumblebee gear on
still, closest that Psycho has gotten to /m/ that I can recall is one time he had a mask that was half Seiya, the time he had a mask that was half Iron Man, and the time he had a mask that was half Freeza

How does one go about getting into and watching these?

      dorkly_chair at instituteforspacepolitics.org

there's a mess subbed on youtube and archive at any given moment, most are sorta that B-Movie but they have wrestlers instead of the local kids or whatever
possibly most accessible is the MST3k ep of Samson vs The vampire Women, but that one actually gets sorta heavy into continuity for the host segments, as insane as such a concept might sound
and if that doesn't do it for you but you still need guys talking over the movie there's always MST's non-union Mexican equivalent

A lot of subbed ones are on archive, dubbed on Tubi, and YouTube.

I'm so fricking jelly that you guys have at home. I swear this may be the only pieces of film that use miniatures, pyrotechnics, and or editing tricks from Argentina and they are all political satire skits.

And if we stretch the definition of toku to the furthest, this one with all the scenes with effects such scale and all that use of vehicles from excavators, a customized dragon car and a small plane for action. (from 18:30 to 27:50, and then 45:10 to 56:00).

there's been more than a few toku heros who rocked some wrasslin, iirc Doc from Gokaiger broke out a Figure Four Leg Lock a couple of times

Shocker minions have a luchador theme. It'd be complicated to have a hero luchador

iirc the classic EEEEE! lucha mask shocker mooks started when the Cactus Kaijin from Mexico showed up and they just kept it forever, before that shocker goons were dudes in berets and chicks in fishnets and stuff

        Anonymous

The funny thing is that they only had the luchador look simply because they debuted in an episode(the first to feature Nigo rider) where they came from shocker’s Mexican branch with cactus man, thru just stuck with them after realizing how more versatile(and cost effective);they are in comparison to the earlier designs with face paint

I worked on a Mil Mascaras movie. A real piece of shit student film. The entire cast would sheepishly say afterward shat a creepy butthole Mascaras was. Idk if the movie ever even came out, it was delayed for like 6 years.

yeah, I don't think I've ever heard any story about people working with him that doesn't include at least one aside about him being a dick

I wish there was more /m/echa wrestling content

I recall that being pretty fun, if very low budget.

also regarding the OP it should probably be pointed out that the linked video is a bootleg Santo from Turkey
