it's not gonna get any better unless something happened 4 years ago. I had to leave one of the nicest most awesome woman I knew because her sex drive was just not there. it sucks but there's nothing worse than having sexual frustration, for either side. it manifests in tons of normal interactions too.

My body count is over 20. But last year I met someone I genuinely cared for. The intimacy level was 11/10. Never experienced that before. We broke up. She did the typical go psycho after 6 months and become a completely different person thing but I digress. Now I've been craving that level of intimacy again and its been rough. So sex in general is not necessary. But once you've had the kind of sex where you are just frickin connected, that's different. That's something you crave once you've had it.

I mean just step out of the closet, or don't watch those movies or shows if you don't like it. Some very, very important and brilliant films have sex scenes- (like "The name of the Rose", which has one of the hottest sex scenes in a movie ever and is super relevant to the main characters development).

Say what you will about the sequel to Sin City, it does provide a good example of when a film has sex scenes that are essential the plot and can't reasonably be cut without detracting from the overall film.

There is never a plot driven reason for nudity, it is strictly to sell seats based on how much people want to see an actress naked, and for hot actresses it's a way to boost their careers (and it's a way for the producers who everybody knows are fricking them to show off what they own). You can have sex scenes without nudity if they're required for the plot.

The sex and nudity in pic related IS essential to the plot for one of the main short stories. Eva Green's story wouldn't work at all without the on-screen sex being shown. It's an actual plot point.

Watch it and you'll understand. Eva Green's whole character uses sex as a means of advancing her own devious plots. It's actually probably the best story out of the three or four.

I guarantee that movie with the cucked rich guy and his dom woman (idk wtf it's called, you know the one) has more characterization and plot progression in the sex scenes in those webms people post than anything in a sin city movie and there's no nudity, at least not in those webms (I'm not trying to praise the movie, there might be nudity at other times, just using those shots as an example).

True. Or sometimes the producer is the actress and they know people will only watch the movie if they know they will see their breasts (like Kate Mara in My Days or Mercy, Margot Robbie in Dreamland, Alison Brie in Anyone But You, etc...)

      >plot driven reason
      >required for the plot
Plot isn't the only significant aspect of a film. Peter Greenaway would argue that it's the least important aspect of a film, and that film leaning on literature and storytelling has been the downfall and stagnation of what should have been a primarily visual medium.
Painters and sculptors have used the human form in it's purest state as a subject of visual exploration for thousands of years, there's no reason why directors shouldn't do the same. Nudity can convey many things: intimacy, vulnerability, purity, egolessness (Dr. Manhattan) etc. and there's no reason directors should be restricted from using every color on their palette.
I don't see nudity as something a director should have to apologize for or only incorporate it if utterly necessary anymore than I see any other visual element that way. Nobody would say that Fellini should only incorporate elaborate costumes or baroque sets and other visual elements when they are strictly necessary to the plot. Or that because the story of Wild Strawberries could have been told without its opening dream sequence, that Bergman should not have included it. Likewise, allow directors to use nudity with the same freedom that painters have.
I will agree that a lot of hack directors use nudity purely for titillation and to have a cheap sense of making something "mature" or "edgy", I don't really watch any tv but from what I hear HBO shows do this a lot, but regardless that shouldn't have any implications on the nudity in films by Greenaway, Roeg, Cronenberg, etc.

I'll concede that it CAN be used in theory like you're saying, though the vast, VAST majority is the HBO style edgy stuff that serves no purpose. The majority is so large that I'm fine with painting it with a single brush and addressing exceptions on an individual basis.

This is just Sturgeon's Law though. Granted, me mostly watching stuff that I know I'll be interested in and not having watched a new tv show since the Twin Peaks revivial probably skews me more towards seeing nudity and sex scenes with more merit than those on HBO. To me its like trashing fight scenes in general just because most directors suck at doing them well in a way that's meaningful. Sure that's true, but we shouldn't frame our discussions about these things around forgettable Hollywood slop, we should frame discussions around the very best of them and how they can be used properly.

Complete piece of shit and pervert who can't either write or handle storytelling and tries to downplay the importance of plot because of it.

Sooner that pseudo intellectual fraud kicks the bucket, the better.

Ironically he can write and his movies have some of the most distinct and interesting dialogue out there. I think his "kill all screenwriters" comments have to be taken as being somewhat tongue-in-cheek when they're said by the man who wrote the scripts to The Draughtsman's Contract and The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover.

            Anonymous

Again, I'm fine with bashing mindless fight and action scenes, as well as sex scenes, because I think the directors should be actively trying to justify their inclusion.
It's not even necessarily that I'm trying to suggest that the only thing that matters is the plot, my issue is that 99% of the time nude scenes are about the irl actress and not the movie or even her character.

              Anonymous

Maybe I've misinterpreted your previous comments; I'm so used to seeing people argue that *all* sex and nudity scenes are pointless and only exist for titillation that I was reading what you were saying about painting with a broad brush that way. Sounds like we basically agree that sex scenes and violent scenes can be done with artistic integrity and can be an integral and important part of a movie made by a director who knows what he's doing, even if the majority of movies are slop and the majority of sex and fight scenes are just cheap titillation.
              >my issue is that 99% of the time nude scenes are about the irl actress and not the movie or even her character.
I think part of it is that the narrative keeps getting built up about the "bravery" and "daring" quality about these types of scenes even before they're released. I remember articles were coming out about Emma Stone's nudity in Poor Things for a while before the film released and quotes were circulating about Yorgos saying that Emma was fearless and had to have no qualms about the nudity, and inevitably it becomes a narrative that kind of overtakes the movie itself.
Even though there's a steady stream of semi-mainstream films with high profile actresses that get a lot of attention for their explicit sexual content going back to Last Tango in Paris, they're still infrequent enough and there's still so much discourse especially lately about nudity in films and zoomers not wanting it that it becomes the narrative. Nudity becomes like facial prosthetics or body transformations done for a role; it becomes so much of the narrative of the movie that it ends up being a distraction.
It's a shame Showgirls had to be the film to build a narrative about creating a precedent for legitimizing the idea of studios putting out a big NC-17 movie with artistic legitimacy, because one imagines that if something like Poor Things or Last Tango in Paris had taken that mantle and been successful we could have a (cont.)

This times a million. The obsession with plot in film is a disaster. It has people watching movies and TV at 2x speed or watching 40 minute reaction video versions of movies, because they think the purpose of watching a movie is to find out what happens in it. "OMG, Captain America just picked up the hammer, I cheer this plot point."

Film is an experience. When Tobe Hooper was making Texas Chainsaw Massacre, he used tricks when he wanted the audience to jump, like cutting out frames so things happen faster than they're expected, and having the scare come from a part of the screen that the audience isn't looking at, so the audience has their attention on screen left, and then with no warning an attack comes from screen right moving faster than your mind expects it to.

Even titillation is valid. It's incredibly unhealthy that all these people are running around saying that it's acceptable, positive, and good to make pornography, but that sex and nudity in films is dangerous, unnecessary, abusive exploitation. You get less pushback going on Craigslist to hire a teenager for $500 to video the inside of her butthole in 4k and film a random 40 year old man fricking her mouth until she pukes, than you would filming a well-compensated actress naked in a shower, on a union set, for a 25 second scene in an action movie. We raise a generation of kids who are exposed to endless depictions of underpaid women being used and abused by men they don't know or like for profit, but congratulate ourselves we spare people from seeing depictions of people who love/like each other being naked and having sex for fun and pleasure.

If you're cut and jerk off- sex literally feels like nothing. If you're cut and don't use your hand while jerking off.. slightly better- at least you can feel something. If you didn't get your foreskin ripped off by israelitei- I mean "doctors" then you feel a lot more, and its actually a decent experience with a woman. Ultimately- a 100% honest no cap just buy a fleshlight. Sex is overrated. Its fun, foreplay is nice, and being close to a woman is nice, but I've never had great sex even when I was younger. So you just do you and maybe meet someone or get an escort someday and try it out if you feel like it.

I always saw it as a three stage event. Best is with a woman who you like each other and have great chemistry+ body language. Foreplay alone builds up such tension that is just awesome to release once you get there

Second level is just having a quality wank. It can be pretty decent as you are 100% in control but lacks the crucial elements of smell/sound/warmth etc.

Worst part is fricking some girl you are really not into or she into you. opposite to the first stage. Absolutely cringe and uncomfortable experience for both of you. Avoid at all costs. This is what sex starved morons dont get how all of that dance and routine dating a girl is important for acting as a litmus shit test that goes both ways

    >what is the point of this shot? Just to be "pretty" or make me feel things? Ugh it adds nothing to the plot! In fact I think I'll just go read the script in another room, these visuals aren't necessary, neither is the music

Over 90% of movie or TV sex scenes are irrelevant to plot. Sometimes a one or two sex scenes might be justified but pervs or hacks film like half dozen or more of them.

Sex is absolutely necessary. I don't think you appreciate just how utterly broken sexless people are. Not a single one of those people has an opinion on any subject that can ever be trusted.

Oh wait, you mean IN FILM. Disregard, I thought you were talking about real life. Yeah I would say, in film, most sex scenes can be tuned down a bit, unless it's specifically a film meant to get couples in the mood. Those are nice.

Ironically it's the only good scene in the movie, because it's FUNNY. The two guys just start complaining because they're DPing here and they can feel each others' dicks so they pull out and get into a big argument. It's the only thing in the movie that isn't bland, drab, dull grey meaningless nonsense.

Absolutely. The human experience revolves around sex, sex is the most intimate and vunerable part of our lives and it should be used to convey strong emotional bonds or lack thereof. A rape scene is powerful because it's a brutal showcase of one's agency being stolen, a passionate consenting sex scene is powerful because it shows how emotionally connected two characters are. Then you can also tell the audience a lot about a character in how they treat sex on screen, The Wolf Of Wall Street and The Sopranos are good examples.

      Should be but isn't

Rape scenes are fricking cheap and a dime a dozen. It's literally the most common lazy way for a hack filmmaker to say BAD GUY BAD

I think at some point in the past sex scenes were welcomed but nowadays when I want to watch pornographic imagery, there are websites for that.

What annoys me the most is when the movie unexpectedly cuts to a woman moaning or yelling. Due to socio-economic factors, I still live with my parents and that's fricking awkward. They're directly in the other room. Hate that

Any time I see a sex or nudity scene in a movie I involuntarily picture the director and producers as jabba the hutt licking the woman with their giant slimy tongues.
Actually more of an issue for 'serious' movies, because the goofy b-movies that just overtly have strippers or porn stars in them to do those scenes obviously weren't taking themselves seriously. But any time it's like a 'real' actress and directors you know it was slimeball shit and backdoor blowjobs.

i look away when there's heavy making out or a sex scene or what have you
I've been in a relationship and i've had sex it just feels weird watching it in a film/show compared to just porn
it makes me start thinking about the behind the scenes and how they'd film/coordinate it, if the actors/actresses are married in real life and how that would affect the spouse, etc
    so it's probably just autism

          Anonymous

I'm not that anon, but it's just done like anything else. You talk about the scene with the director, and your scene partner, and kinda plan it out, and then you do it.

Film sets are not romantic places, and acting in a movie is not at all like being in reality. There's a big camera with people operating it, and people holding giant white screens to bounce light, and a big sweaty man holding a boom mic, and makeup people coming in and out to do touch ups. And you just about always film them on your very first day so you're nervous and don't really know anyone yet.
