Pretty Village, Pretty Flame is usually recommended, and after learning more about the Balkan Wars period, I feel like it had the right idea in how to capture the spirit of those times by balancing the war film mood with delirium and comedy

Then of course the US chimed in on the part of the poor widdle Muslims and started attacking the Serbs who were obviously the ‘bad guys’ (even though they were all busy killing each other).
Where it gets muddy is that the Croats (Catholics) sided with the Bosniaks (Muslims) and there were heaps of people who were atypical (like Bosnian Serbs or Muslim Croats).
There are some great books about it such as ‘My war gone by, I miss it so’, and ‘The fixer’ or ‘Safe Zone Gorazde’ by Joe Sacco.
I would love to see a movie that deals with the war in an equal handed fashion but sadly few people know enough about the war to write a script like that. Even sadder is this assumption that the Serbs were the ‘bad guys’ for striking back after fifty years of pogroms and death at the hands of the other groups.

As for film recommendations, the above mentioned Lepa Sela, Lepo Gore is great and a metaphor for the rise of nationalism and downfall of Yugoslavia.
I would also recommend The Perfect Circle (1997) for a more depressing, slightly poetic display of personal struggle in the war.

The first thing that the leaders of the Bosnian Muslim community did was reminding every Muslim that harming their neighbors of any religion would be an unforgivable sin and condemning Ustashe and German attacks on israelites and Serbs. The list of Muslim anti-fascist is huge - Kulenovac, Bijedić, Pozderac, Humo, etc. A lot of them were resistance members from the outset, unlike many Serb Partisans who sent most of the war as chetniks and then joined the partisans toward the end - while continuing to pillage and burn non-Serb villages in partisan uniforms.
The only reason why many Muslims agreed to join the 13. SS was because the Serbs had massacred entire towns in Eastern Bosnia: The number of Muslims killed in WWII exceeds the number of Serbs killed per capita. The Germans basically gave them the choice: wait for the Serbs to come and wipe out your families or join the SS and get some arms to defend yourself. Also, the 13. SS was a front-line unit and not a death-squad, they never participated in any ethnic cleansing, not Serbs or anyone else.
As soon as they realized they'd been duped and weren't employed to protect towns against the chetniks (like they were promised) but instead sent to France - they rebelled and were the first to liberate French (and Western European) soil from the Germans (before D-day, before the French, before anyone.) The French raised a monument to them and honour them every year - pic related.
So yeah, that whole "well, the 13.SS was the same as chetniks and ustashe" is a complete fabrication.

Go and ask the average person in Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia what they think of Yugoslavia and Tito. Or just look at how vandalized certain monuments are.
Bosnia was always the most pro-Yugoslav republic. Unlike Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia it never had a major pro-independence faction before the late 80s. But when the Serbs literally announce on TV that they're going to "cleanse all non-Serbs from Bosnia" and non-Serbs see that the army is preparing concentration camps - then you're not leaving people much choice. Serb megalomania split Yugoslavia apart.

Name a few, see how they compare to what Serbs (and to a lesser degree Croats) did. The worst thing that the Bosnian side did was the Stijene case in Sarajevo where one ex-mobster who commanded a reconnaissance unit kidnapped and murdered Serb civilians for their money. As soon as the Bosnian army got wind of it they sent the military police to arrest them, he killed the MPs and had them tortured to death. Their graves are located in Sarajevos central park. He fled via Croatia to Germany where he was tracked down and killed by Bosnian military intelligence. The killed civilians and the MPs are honored every year. Now can you imagine Serbian military command arresting and killing Serb units for killing civilians? That was part of their job description. The Bosnian government never proclaimed laws striping non-Muslims of all their human rights like the Serbs did, they never had concentration camps or anything alike.
Serbs literally murdered and exiled millions during the Balkan Wars - Muslims, Catholics and Orthodox "brothers." Go read Načertanje, it's the seminal text of Serbs politics and has been their playbook for over 150 years. Basically, Serbian Orthodox Christians had been brutalised and ethnically cleaned by Bosnian Muslims and Croatian Catholics for over a century. With the fall of Yugoslavia they wanted to establish a nation of their own, which involved forcible relocation of Bosniaks and Croats. When those groups resisted it went from relocation to ethnic cleansing. Then of course the US chimed in on the part of the poor widdle Muslims and started attacking the Serbs who were obviously the ‘bad guys’ (even though they were all busy killing each other).
Where it gets muddy is that the Croats (Catholics) sided with the Bosniaks (Muslims) and there were heaps of people who were atypical (like Bosnian Serbs or Muslim Croats).
There are some great books about it such as ‘My war gone by, I miss it so’, and ‘The fixer’ or ‘Safe Zone Gorazde’ by Joe Sacco.
I would love to see a movie that deals with the war in an equal handed fashion but sadly few people know enough about the war to write a script like that. Even sadder is this assumption that the Serbs were the ‘bad guys’ for striking back after fifty years of pogroms and death at the hands of the other groups.

The first thing that the leaders of the Bosnian Muslim community did was reminding every Muslim that harming their neighbors of any religion would be an unforgivable sin and condemning Ustashe and German attacks on israelites and Serbs. SS was a front-line unit and not a death-squad, they never participated in any ethnic cleansing, not Serbs or anyone else.
As soon as they realized they'd been duped and weren't employed to protect towns against the chetniks (like they were promised) but instead sent to France - they rebelled and were the first to liberate French (and Western European) soil from the Germans (before D-day, before the French, before anyone.) The French raised a monument to them and honour them every year - pic related.
So yeah, that whole "well, the 13.SS was the same as chetniks and ustashe" is a complete fabrication.

Bosnia was always the most pro-Yugoslav republic. Unlike Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia it never had a major pro-independence faction before the late 80s. But when the Serbs literally announce on TV that they're going to "cleanse all non-Serbs from Bosnia" and non-Serbs see that the army is preparing concentration camps - then you're not leaving people much choice.
