Are there non superhero comics that aren't hipster shit? Am I ignorant or is that basically what the industry consists of outside of scraping for old stuff and random dark horse tie ins.
Are there non superhero comics that aren't hipster shit? Am I ignorant or is that basically what the industry consists of outside of scraping for old stuff and random dark horse tie ins.
What do you define as non hipster? For me non superhero non hipster shit is basically everything Image, Dark Horse, IDW Oni, etc publish. It doesn't become hipster until you start reading Fantagraphics or Drawn and Quarterly.
halloween from chaos comics.
hipster: saga
non hipster: from hell
From hell is definitely hipster shit. And VASTLY overrated at that.
>satan doesn't want me reading From Hell and desperately tries to make it sound bad with buzzwords
welp, better go buy it then I guess
I still find it odd that From Hell was considered better than the Sandman by the Eisner Award people. From Hell felt like a chore, Sandman was a delight for 74 issues. Gaiman comparing himself to Shakespeare was a bit much and he never touches upon that none of his plays were original (in the Sandman universe, Morpheus commissions him to make him plays based on stories he fed him. So Midsummer's Night Dream and the Tempest were adaptations and not original in the universe. I feel being the most prolific writer with no ideas of his own would've been a better deal at the pub than that he'd have to sacrifice family time for writing.)
Isn't Hamlet and Romeo And Juliet both based on older stories that he changed around a lot to make plays out of, with Hamlet being a German or Danish story and Romeo And Juliet being from Italy or something? I'm sure I've read that somewhere and thought Gaiman was using that as the basis for Morpheus commissioning him to do the exact same thing. Like asking Frank Darabont to make a movie based on your book because you know he's got a good track record adapting Stephen King stories to the big screen.
As for From Hell, I'm betting it was just seen as higher art because it deals much more with real history, except for the esoteric stuff that can easily be the ramblings of a madman, and doesn't feature a big magic guy that's all white going to Hell to fight Lucifer's demons with words. When it came out there was no comic that would try to do such a thorough deep-dive into the victims of Jack The Ripper, but after it came out we've had even more books on the subject so it seems less special now. Only a decade earlier you had movies dealing with Jack The Ripper by making him a time traveller and crazy shit like that, so to have a comic taking him and his victims seriously as people is a from hell of thing.
>From Hell felt like a chore, Sandman was a delight for 74 issues.
Speak for yourself. It took me a months to finish Sandman because I was so bored, while I devoured From Hell in a couple of nights.
I binged both the first time I read them and return to both occasionally years after
Let's not fight over such things
And even Fantagraphics have all the old classic stuff that's not particularly hipster.
WTF Do you want?
Of course the big name non cape comics are going to be hipster shit, non cape comics that are not pretentious are a dime a dozen.
If I say no, will you never come back to this board
I don't make recommendations to homosexuals.
>Are there non superhero comics that aren't hipster shit?
No, and it's extremely frustrating.
You shouldn't make recommendations at all.
scigay
I hate that the only people to actively reply to comic book threads are these grumbling moron autismos that seem to want to kill comic book discussion altogether. The better threads I caught from the past week had someone like this. What's worse is that without them, the threads would just die sooner. That's why we need a slow board for comics.
To be fair, this was a shit topic created to stoke bickering. OP isn’t asking for suggestions or posing a thought provoking question. The intent is to stir shit.
Yeah, but I've seen it happen in good threads.
>The intent is to stir shit.
Obsessed.
Or, you could stop with the recshit that attracts shitty secondaries. Dumbass.
You're the problem, not the "shitty secondaries".
I'm the problem because I point out the obvious fact that anyone who's actually interested in comics is just going to look them up on their own, and that anyone asking for recs is by definition approaching the subject in bad faith? Sure, pal.
I really hope you are baiting because if not then you are one of the biggest morons in a board famous for it's morons. If people dig for comics on their own without getting advice from actual comic readers they are more often than not going to play bargain bin roulette and lose interest or wind up only reading modern mainstream stuff without broadening their horizons.
please please stop replying to him he can keep it up for days (no cap)
>advice from actual comic fans
It's not my fricking job to spoonfeed morons who apparently aren't able to use a damn search bar. If you can't find something on your own, you don't deserve to have it.
>I'm the problem
Yes, because you'd rather kill comic book discussion than actually discuss anything. You're absolutely, 100% THE problem.
“Hipster shit” is an undefined term and can be anything. This thread is worthless. Anything that could be suggested will be shot down and branded “hipster shit” because at the end of the day you don’t want to like anything, you just want to complain.
Stop being a disingenuous homosexual.
You sound mad. Maybe take a break from the internet for a bit and get a snack?
He's right though. This is just a thread for you to whine.
If we had more people that thought like this the boards would be better.
Better in what way?
I don't read comics, I'm on this board because of cartoons, from what I see it seems like the whole comic thing is filled with nothing but outcasts that consists of geeks, hipster homosexuals, and that's about it...
Shut up OP, you're not fooling anyone.
I don't watch cartoons, I'm on this board because of comics, from what I see it seems like the whole cartoon thing is filled with nothing but outcasts that consists of geeks, hipster homosexuals, and that's about it...

Yes. There is a lot of fantasy, horror, sci-fi, fun weird stuff, ect out there. You just have to dig around for what you like. I am not going to give you any recommendations though because you sound like a prick who has already made up his mind and just wants to be a doomer.
>There is a lot of fantasy, horror, sci-fi, fun weird stuff, ect out there.
No there isn't. And if one has to dig through piles of shit to get to something vaguely worth reading, then that's a sign that the entire medium is fricked.
>if one has to dig through piles of shit to get to something vaguely worth reading, then that's a sign that the entire medium is fricked.
If you apply that standard to other forms of media then every medium is fricked but sure.
Good material should always be well known and readily available. All other mediums do that. Comics don't.
You're just admitting that all you want is slop spoonfed to you because even a minute of using your fat fingers and brain to search is too taxing for you. If you're not being a disingenuous prick then share some of the stuff you do like so people can point your lazy ass in the right direction.
No, I want good comics to exist in the first place. Which at the moment, they don't.
>then that's a sign that the entire medium is fricked.
The medium is fricked period, I've only read like 10 good comics (AND manga) in my entire life.
No, other mediums don't do that either, films and vidya don't for one.
I'm not a prick but I am a pervert and a loser. please spoonfeed me.

To be fair you'd have to be some kind of yuppie with a secured future to pursue a full time career in comic books, without the intent to exploit profitable trends, today.
It's really just a process of eliminate leaving you with hipsters.
Look into French comics like Incal, I'm certainly glad I did.

That's Euro comics.
checc out the puritanical homosexual
That and the shitty watercolor looking artwork.
The overabundance of boring as frick navel gazing hipster shit comics is a well documented fact outside of the big two. So are there any that defy this trend? Yeah a few off the top of my head.
Hellboy: I hear its good but I'm no fan of the art its in my backlog.
Saga: Seems to impress people that have never read a scifi novel in their lives.
Sandman- King of the hipster comics. Just checking to see if you're paying attention.
Deadly Class: Edgy Naruto stories go and come every few years. This looks cool
Y: The Last Man: Ending so bad I'm still mad like a decade later. Read if you want to know true seething at a bad ending.
Planetary: One of my favorite comics. It has some capes here and there but not how you'd expect. They don't make them like this anymore.
Why am I recommending shit from the stone age? Because comics suck. You're welcome.
Planetary is the Sandman of capeshit.
Sandman is the Sandman of Capeshit.
>Y: The Last Man: Ending so bad I'm still mad like a decade later. Read if you want to know true seething at a bad ending.
You say that like you thought the plot wouldn't be shit after he gets discovered as the last living man, and almost everyone is OK with him just wandering around. MAYBE with a single bodyguard.
>We only have one man left, and the species will cease to exist without him
>Let him roam around free, if he gets shot by one of the many psychos out to kill him, oh well, shit happens, this is OK
I dropped it right then and there. If you are going to make an entire comic off of a premise, you can't have the majority of characters completely ignore the premise. It's stupid and unrealistic.

Anybody know what the middle comic is in OP?I'm digging that 80s advertisement art.
Phonogram
Thanks!
There is no cure for cancer. Just let the medium die.
The medium is doing fine. The American industry is fricked.
And the alternatives aren't much better.
Manga is doing better than ever.
Only in the west. In Japan its sales peaked decades ago.
Nah, that's bullshit.
Time before time is great read that.
Define hipster shit.
>Are there non superhero comics that aren't hipster shit?
Do you mean current comics? Because if that's what you mean then the answer (unfortunately) is "NO".
Wrong.
Would you consider Beautiful Darkness hipster shit?
kind of but in a sour grapes sense, I can't really complain about a whimsical fairy tale and children's illustration in comicbook. I vaguely remember skimming through a pdf of it a few years ago.
Hi I am OP. I was being a shit stirring gay but honestly that is the position I am in. I trawl comic releases(outside of the standard gem recommendations like Y the last man, preacher, sandman, etc.) and that's what I see. If you have a comic that's under the radar and avoids the on the nose tumblr hipster label please recommend.
>tumblr hipster
A lot of capeshit amd Imageshit is this. Fantagraphics and D&Q shit is a different brand of pretentious.
Its sort of depends what you mean by “Hipster Shit”?
Some “alternative” comics.
I suppose the term “graphic novel” might apply better, but here.
“Unflattening” by Nick Sousanis.
Written as a dissertation at Columbia University, and then later published by Harvard University Press.
It seemed to be some sort of philosophical thesis.
“The Phantom Scientist” by Robin Cousin
“An isolated institute laid out in a Fibonacci sequence, hidden deep in the forest. Twenty-four labs. Twenty-four researchers. Until one of them disappears . . .”
Basically this was about a weird Scientific Institute, set up to test a particular math problem, and one that is actually a concern in genuine mathematical theory.
“Swimming in Darkness” by Lucas Harari.
About an architectural student who becomes obsessed with a particular building (that actually exists in real life).
I suppose this might be a bit “hipsterish”.
“Department of Truth”
“Homicide: The Graphic Novel” by David Simon.
David Simon was the creator of TV shows like “The Wire” , and the “Homicide” graphic novel is based on his research that became the “Homicide: Life on the Street” TV show.
“The Obscure Cities” series of comics by Benoit Peeters, and Francois Schuiten. Although good luck finding the comics in English once out of print, if you don’t want to spend a fortune.
Thanks for the recs :^)
I think I’ve only ever read one Charlie Brown, might be a euro thing.
Legends of the pierced vale series by Saverio Tenuta, are some awesome fantasy samurai stories.
The original The Mask trilogy by John Arcudi, kinda bordering on capeshit but has incredible paneling.
If you handle a bit of hipsterness, I recommend The Rabbi’s Cat, a story about a talking cat trying to understand Judaism.
>hipster
Am I in 2007? If so, good. I had more money then.
What does that even mean
is bobbinverse hipster?
Euro comics are peak hipster unless you're a European.
Also I don't think anything printed by Image, Boom, Darkhorse, AWA, Vault, Oni Press, etc could be consider hipster.
A lot of Image is hipster.
Nah they wish they were hipster.
You shouldn't even be allowed to post on this site if you haven't read Peanuts/Charlie Brown. Charlie Brown is Cinemaphile core, /b/ core, /c/ core, /d/ core, /e/ core, /f/ core, Cinemaphile core, /gif/ core, /h/ core, /hi/ core, /k/ core, /m/ core, Cinemaphile core, Cinemaphile core, /r/ core, /s/ core, /t/ core, Cinemaphile core, /vg/ core, /vm/, /vr/ core, /vrpg/ core, /vst/ core, /wg/ core, /ic/ core, /LULZ/ core, /s4s/ core, /vip/ core, /qa/ core, /cm/ core, /hm/ core, /lgbt/ core, /y/ core, Cinemaphile core, /3/ core, /aco/ core, /adv/ core, Cinemaphile core, /bant/ core, Cinemaphile core, /cgl/ core, Cinemaphile core, Cinemaphile core, Cinemaphile core, Cinemaphile core, Cinemaphile core, Cinemaphile core, /ho/ core, Cinemaphile core, Cinemaphile core, /jp/ core, Cinemaphile core, /mlp/(for whatever reason) core, Cinemaphile core, /n/ core, /news/ core, Cinemaphile core, /po/ core, /misc/ core, Cinemaphile core, /qst/ core, Cinemaphile core, /soc/ core, Cinemaphile core, /tg/ core, /toy/ core, Cinemaphile core, Cinemaphile core, /vt/ core, /wsg/ core, /wsr/ core, /x/ core, /x/ core.
As shitty and awful you all are, Charlie Brown remains the heart and soul of Cinemaphile, right next to Yotsuba. Except for /vp/ because frick that board.
So basically you want action comics without superheroes?
Pretty much. It seems like anon specifically wants non-cape action comics that aren't trying to make any major points, don't have any sort of subversion, have a fairly realistic art style that doesn't make too many waves and are specifically American.
If those are his standards then I can get why he is having trouble.
If you can only read populist comics then superheroes are it for well over half a century now. Unless you want Scholastic book fair shit.
Hellboy
Scalped is as far from hipster you can get and there's no superheroics. I'm surprised they haven't turned it into a The Wire-like prestige show on HBO.
Read funny animal books. There's a whole slew of them. There's also Archie and all of the licensed titles out there.
>If you keep reading b&w indie press shit, you're going to keep getting b&w indie press stories.
East of West

Problem with th elater is that it was severely disrupted after the 2010s tv pitch fad
