Stellan Skarsgard is a terrible actor.

I wouldn’t say he’s a bad actor. I mean what is he supposed to do in this movie? Denis barely uses him. I bet if you took both parts and made a compilation of only scenes with Baron it would amount to ten minutes tops. He’s severely underused. Pretty much everyone but the Fremen and Austin Butler as a last minute villain. And the arena scene is better in the book.

        >And the arena scene is better in the book.
I mean the whole book is infinitely better. I can think of many things the movies did well, nothing better than the book however.

You can't actually show the shit that he does in the books without an NC-17 rating.

They could show a lot more if it was R, which is how it was originally shot, before the studio awkwardly edited it down to PG in order to market it to women and children.

Denis direction in these Dune movies is awful. It's like he just didn't give a flying frick about anything and all the performances are completely flat.

I mean he's literally gone on record as stating he doesn't care about plot, dialogue, performances, sound, or anything but pretty pictures. His ideal movie like that one Asian move that is just a collection of images.

He does great visuals, but his movies are only really watchable if there are really solid actors like gyllenhall, del toro/blunt, or goose/harrison to save them. Sometimes they very obviously aren't enough.

I'm tired of people defending Sneeder or Villeneuve as good visual directors.
They are not. Static shots of Artstation tier concept arts is not good cinematography, everything in this movie is extremely flat, from character performances to the cinematography.

Characters act on a backdrop of a theatrically flat background they don't interact with, aligned across the screen or moving across it in straight lines.
This is not good visuals, it's baby's first composition.

IF this was bringing it towards irl Theater acting and sets it might be forgiveable, but that's not the aim at all. Zimmer phoning it in for decades at least has gone hard and atypical with the ambient noise and electronic material for the soundtrack (more remarkable in light of how cliche manipulative movie music the Arrival one was).

Worst about it is that they cut a lot - there should be a place at least for Stilgars arch or for Chani-Jessica relation which are both thematically relevant to the main story.

I get that there are screen limits, I wouldn't mind villains being just cliche Hollywood psychos, but why not give 2-3 scenes to the main followers of the Paul to illustrate the realpolitik, fanaticism, faith, love etc. Movie surely was long enough to permit that... Right?

Especially since it doesn't explore what Paul fears about becoming a Messiah exactly, it just reuses same gaping baasedyaque dying of starvation vision-scene 3 time

Dune in the Harkonnens is an occasion to make GMO frickdoll technocracy that makes Blade Runner look tame. It doesn't have to be shown anymore than Hitchwiener showed full frontal penetration for sex scenes. Villanerd's just not up to the task.

They are blatantly evil on the books as well, but it's properly fleshed out, the baron for example is an hedonist animal, that gives himself to gluttony and sex, this is reflected in his tactical decisions, that are flawed due to his self indulgence attitudes.

his quote from last week was totally illuminating. he doesnt care about dialogue or plot or introspection. he is all about the visual spectacle which is excellent.
he's even more autistic than young george lucas who at least cared about plot and dialogue

The constant killing of servants and henchmen was so juvenile and distasteful. It was also incredibly cheap to sell how "scary" they are. All around, a film that looks great visually but is abhorrent on any other measure.

      >The constant killing of servants and henchmen was so juvenile and distasteful

It was to make the Harkonnen look bad, and Paul look good.
      >Paul refuses to kill Stilgar when requested
      >meanwhile, the Harkonnen casually kill their underlings
It was kind of comical after a while, but I suppose it's to help explain why they were so easily defeated.

They were, but so was the Emperor's army. It's kind of pathetic how the Fremen can just beat everyone. The only winning move I can see, is if they destroy the planet. I wonder if that happens in the next movie, or maybe everyone lands on the planet just to die. Paul has a vision of everyone dying, so clearly something happens.

That does make for a really lame story. It's like, what is a person learning, when you watch an army easily beat everyone. Paul has wiped out two different factions by the end of Part 2. I just can't help but see these movies as
