Why do they make films if they need it to make a billion just to break even?

The Batgirl film that got canceled was allegedly going to cost "Hundreds of millions" to market. Just to market. There's a reason it's canceled.

This is 'just' the box office money, there's money later coming in from streaming deals (although in this case, more subscriptions to D+) and physical sales.

Having said that, Disney certainly expected a higher box office gross, they have strong-armed theatres to give them 60% rather than the standard 50% due to their huge output, but if this downward trend continues, theatres will demand negotiation.

Because it's a gamble. Sure you can lose big, but when you win, you win BIG.

The real question to ask is what are all these companies going to do when the recession gets worse? The first thing to go are stupid useless luxuries like movies.

I don't know, but I did hear that studios and theaters collaborated to lower prices so lower classes could afford to watch movies. Don't know if its true, but modern companies? I don't see them doing this.

Yes and no. People won't stop going to movies, but they will be a LOT more selective.

It's common knowledge that Hollywood schlock needs to earn 2.5 times its budget to make a profit.

You know studios don't get the whole BO, right. The theaters take 50% of the gross in the USA and more overseas.

Conspiracy theory by schizos involving Disney supposedly buying millions of tickets to Captain Marvel to inflate the box office numbers.

    >People think box office money matters for Disney
The movie studios amount to around 10% of Disney's total income and keep serving as idea farms for attractions for the real money, which is the parks. They can even afford opening huge Star Wars shit hotels that nobody visits.
This isn't even a blip to them.

It's more than 10%, but yes the parks and cruises is where they make the most money.

Also the movies are important to provide content to lure in D+ streaming subscriptions.

People aren't going to be checking out expensive theme parks in general due to the recession. And even if things were better Disney has new competition from Nintendo. So Disney is not living on easy mode.

Sure, but it will take time, all the stuff we'll see this year and most of next year is stuff that's already been produced or is mid-to-late production.

Top Gun Maverick was made in 2018-2019, imagine how much Cruise had to fight to keep wokeness out of it.

          Isn't Cruise himself another Leftist?

Probably but that isn't the same thing as woke.

He is savy enough to understand how toxic wokeness/far leftism has become to audiences. It the only explanation for how severely clear of it TG-M & the modern Mission Impossible films have been. The new MI films have had fantastic female characters that never once diminished or degradingly upstaged males which would happen if the film was woke. Hell Jack Reacher had him publicly trashing a woman for being a bawd which is unheard of for modern films.

To each their own, I don't care about context if I see a female being presented as they have never been? Not watching the trash.
