At World's End

This is one of the most insane movies. It's almost 3 hours but it still feels liked they did everything they could to cram literally everything into it. Ship battles, the afterlife, the edge of the world, squidmen, goddesses, Keith Richards, etc. All the effects hold up. Davey Jones still looks amazing. I can't believe this monstrosity of a film got made.

I always envied kids who got to watch this schlockino as their "childhood defining" movies. Not saying they're masterworks but they are insane and must have been mindblowing to watch as a 12 year old.

Black Pearl was, it's really hard to think of anything outside of Indiana Jones that could get the whole family excited like that movie did. The sequels though, nobody liked this looney tune shit, no matter how young they were. The disappointment in the theater was crushing.

Can you explain to me how far into the series it went cartoony? Like what is the "classic" set of movies that you can treat as the real movies, and ignore everything after?

The second film, in the first 40 mins it already jumps the shark. The first two sequels were like Matrix sequels, shot back to back and high on the surprise success of the first film. They take the mild fantasy elements of the first film and pump them up to 11.

            >The second film
You now remember the 30 minute swordfight on the runaway mill-wheel.
            >The third film
By the time of the battle in the maelstrom I was wondering how the hell any of these ships had any surviving sailors to crew them.

As with all the big trilogies of the early 2000s, only the first one is good.

The first is genuinely good. The 2nd is almost filler and is only there to set up the 3rd but is good fun with multiple parties trying to find and control the mcguffin. The 3rd is one of the most maximalist films ever made as the OP describes. 2 and 3 were filmed at the same time back to back. After the 3rd film, the quality suffers and it becomes almost a self parody of more episodic stuff focused on Depp's character too much. The 1st 3 are the only true must see films.

Black Pearl is essentially a perfect film. It didn't need a sequel, let alone 4. That said, I was surprised at how good the 5th pirates film was. Obviously doesn't have anything on Black Pearl, but it was easily the most watchable one since Dead Man's Chest.

What's surprising to me is how bad the fourth movie was. I think it proved that as much as people tend to like Jack, he really can't carry a film by himself and is best enjoyed in smaller doses as a supporting character.

The "Let's reprogram all the animatronics to suck Jack's dick" redo of the ride proved that already.

Already proved by the cannibal island and Davy Jones' locker.

What struck me most rewatching it recently is how different it feels than the modern whedon infected big budget slop. I don't know if "sincerity" is the right word to use or what because this is a movie where every actor is competing to see who can chew the scenery the most, but I guess there is this lack of irony to it all, especially with the dialogue.

Genuinely my favorite of the series.

It was essentially the original (I know it's based on a theme park right but still) big action-packed American blockbuster that wasn't capeshit or some capeshit offshoot. The first three movies were a sensation.

Dead Man's Chest was the one that converted me into a fan. Before this movie I didn't even like or cared about pirates but after it it became one of my favorites settings. A real shame Pirates of the Caribbean went to shit after 3. They could never capture the magic again.

I could see them rekindle it if they manage to get Depp back, but it's unlikely, they'd need half of the cast back as well I reckon
