I always feel bad for Fincher being thrust this steaming pile of crap. He has obviously shown since then that he is a phenomenal director given the right material, but he was constantly over written by execs with Alien 3. He barely got anything he wanted, and things were constantly changed last minute and without his supervision. He has essentially washed his hands of it, and even refused offers of subsequent directors cuts, and he feels it's unfixable.

The Assembly Cut of 3 is actually pretty good if you can get past Hicks and Newt being essentially killed offscreen. Even that young and with that much against him Fincher turned in a striking, somber and visually-arresting film. If anything you’ll leave the Assembly Cut even more confused about Alien 3, because the scenes from it they chose to scrap or reshoot are all better than what ended up in the theatrical release.

First movie: we are trapped without real weapons with deadly hunter alien

Second movie: a heavily armed group of professional soldiers has to escape an alien hive

Third movie; let's just rehash the first movie with far less memorable characters than the last two installments, after killing the memorable survivors off-screen.
    It was simply underwhelming

It's cynical and perfectly in line with the original movie. Nobody but Ripley and Jonesy survived Alien, James Cameron is the guy who's obsessed with turning horror movies into kid-friendly bullshit where none of the "nice" characters die.

People liked Vasquez, people liked Hudson, both of them more than Newt.
Alien 3 was just a soulless rehash of 1 with forgettable characters.

Marvel enabler opinion. You people will cry about this and swallow up "then Ripley and her bf and her new kid went to earth to live happily ever after but an alium came with them but they lille dit and things were fine again and maybe we c u in the sequel ;)"
I liked Hicks and I'm a big fan of Biehn but I think Alien 3 sets the tone and ends the trilogy very well.

      >Marvel enabler opinion.
Sure sign of a small IQ post.
Even the first film had likeable, interesting characters in it. You never care about anyone in the third installment. It's just a badly managed cash-grab off the IP. Even Alien 4 had engaging characters for all it's faults.

You have to earn it. If they were killed off and it was a great movie, people would be fine with it. Instead it's a pretty bad film, and killing them off achieves nothing. That's the issue.

I think it achieves plenty. It has people seething to this day on fact. It's grim and matches the tone of the entire movie.

I hated Alien3. Just a dirty, depressing movie. Even the cast sucked and such an obvious ending.

Someone explain the rationale behind this decision. What could possibly have caused anyone to think this was a good idea?

      >The actors were either not invited, or unable to return
      >Didn't want to recast
      >Killing them off screen solves both issues
That's as far as the thinking went

they couldn't use the original actor for Newt because she had aged IRL despite being in hypersleep in-universe.
fans would have whined about her being recast despite this.
Reese would have diluted Ripley's status as protagonist.
the idea of a "family fighting Aliens" is anti-suspense. you can't kill Newt off. killing Reese off is predictable. killing Ripley off is relatively surprising.
fans of Aliens just wanted a repeat of that movie.

      pretty simple.

Beyond that, Carrie Henn decided acting wasn’t for her and went back to school. She went on to become a teacher, IIRC. Michael Biehn didn’t like the script and refused to be involved. Even if they’d had the money to pay them to reprise their roles they wouldn’t have. Funnily enough Biehn sued the producers for using his likeness on a computer screen without permission and made more money from Alien 3 than he did from starring in Aliens as a result.

what was Biehn's role in the script if he DIDN'T die off-screen at the start?

I don’t think he did have a role in the version of the Alien 3 script that was filmed. In earlier drafts including one by William Gibson, the story focused mostly on Hicks and Bishop, with Ripley being in a coma for most of the movie. The Gibson draft seems like it would have made a pretty decent film, Dark Horse adapted it into a comic a few years back if you’re curious about it.

            >Carrie Henn decided acting wasn’t for her and went back to school. She went on to become a teacher
            Based.

            Based.
Cameron sure knew how to pick 'em, huh?

He really did. Most of the old Cameron regulars seem based beyond belief.

              meh
we can't really use Biehn not liking a script he was a lead character in as an argument against the Fincher movie.
I assumed you meant Charles Dance was subbed in for him somehow, including being killed off in the xenomorph's first appearance.
fundamentally any Alien movie after the second is guaranteed to be lesser, at least Fincher's movie has moments that feel original.

Neither did Henn's but it's still based to frick Hollywood producers out of their money. Biehn is still a beloved actor and I doubt he hurts for money. If he doesn't consider it a win then he's a homosexual.
