If, in both films, the human bad guys are destroying the environment for another lucrative macguffin only to be stopped by the Navi after they spend the first third of the film interacting with CGI aliens and establishing how close they all are I'm gonna be hugely disappointed. Sure, the formula worked for the first two, but it's already tired.

Apparently the 4th movie is very different.

Didn’t see the second one. First one is Pocahontas in space, dicking down the locals and all

      >First one is Pocahontas

So I saw Pocahontas. Didn't end with an epic slaughter of the British like I was promised. No epic battle scenes at all.

Also no hitech tanning beds that put you in another body.

I don't mind that it wasn't in space, but why do people have to be so fricking dishonest all the time. I loved Avatar, but Pocahontas was just pathetic, even by Disney standards. If this is what Cameron is accused of ripping off, people should at least be honest and concede that he surpassed it in every conceivable way.

I liked both Avatar films and found them to be an incredible adventure and a perfect example of how good 3D movies can be if they just concentrate on breathtaking visuals with a light story that keeps you interested. I am actually looking forward to the third film, simply to have more eye-candy. I can understand people not liking the story that much but the way it is often lambasted as being pure shlock seems overboard to me.

I think the issue with the Avatar films is that they are at once more introspective than your average big budget blockbuster action movie but there's nothing beyond a surface level "human greed bad/nature good" message in light of its navel gazing.

Nature is beautiful and humans often frick it up. It's happened again and again, and will continue to happen while there's profits to be made. There's no need to overcomplicate things.

Agree about the 3D, it adds so much and the film is an excellent showcase for it. I find the storytelling highly effective and too easily dismissed.

The basics of it are straightforward, but the nuance is there and it worked far beyond expectations. Like others, I correctly anticipated where it was going, but through sheer skill and overwhelming ability, he somehow sold me on it. I was blown away. Everyone was.

Threadly reminder that human males are anatomically more endowed than Navi. Both comparatively and objectively.

He really is objectively one of the most self-actualized (this is the phrase you were looking for) living people at the moment. Even if one doesn't value his work, it's easy to see from outside that he gets to indulge his personal interests (the nautical stuff plus moviemaking) and gets rewarded for doing it. And he hasn't been canceled/thrown under the bus despite being a white guy currently working on a story with a race element that some don't like (but they can't find a direct or even slight way to call "racism!" personally on him for it).
