Avatar is to millennials what Star Wars was to boomers: only the original trilogies (the three seasons of the original series in Avatar's case) are worth consuming, everything else to come out of the universe ranges from shallow pandering to actual dog shit. And even then the original work isn't as great as the fanbase likes to pretend it is. Also they're both western works with very heavy eastern influence I guess.

it's complicated, ty lee was by far the most popular girl in the old times but as the times goes on azula got more attention (specially nin this baord) and not also korra

however if we talk about an actually underrated girl that would be suki, so yeah

Best and most underrated Avatar girl. Azula is just too much of an attention hog among the fanbase.

Azula absolutely eclipses every other Avatar girl, og or Korra, in regards to popularity. Even if that leaves Ty Lee at forth or fifth most popular girl Toph is absolutely more popular than her and is probably the second most popular overall (and most popular on Cinemaphile) she still ends up feeling underrepresented next to the really popular characters.

ty lee has big breasts and is a flexible contortionist with like 9 equally flexible twin +sisters!! She's either first or second. period.Toph's feet can't compete, Katara ain't gotta enough pussy watta, and suki don't give good enough nookie. They're all boring, Azula tsundere attitude grey delisie's voice, and her incest potential are they only thing that allows her to compete but in terms of raw raw sex appeal ty lee wins with only Ursa being a contender

You can actually justify ephebophelia with Ty lee

Try and draw porn of the non adult characters, and then try to distribute it in either of the garbage media websites like Twitter or Reddit, then you'll see why there's more porn of the adult characters. Although maybe that's changed but yikes in 2018 I was permabanned for posting Raven porn. They literally linked me the post, said it was CP, and as such I was permabanned.

The only fix I can see is that they go far off into the future that there are no aged characters to interact with
Past the modern era but before going full cyberpunk since they are probably saving the future era for the fire avatar

I know it's been discussed to death that she probably has Air Nomad blood, but do you really think she'd be able to awaken airbending?

I would assume that if the avatar could take away bending, he could give it.
Of course they would never make that canon because it solves the benders vs no benders issue

I think it's literally just a case of nostalgia not working, and both the prequels and sequels relied on you already caring about the originals, like finally seeing Darth Vader at the end of Revenge of the Sith or TFA being very pandering. The rest of the world got Star Wars when it was shiny and new, while Star Wars came out a year after the Cultural Revolution ended

I'm 100% convinced that Azula wouldn't be near as popular or memorable if the beach episode never aired. For every other character the beach episode is just more of the same. For Azula it is an unique look into the real her.

Also she is the only one among the top Avatar girls who is not selling herself with her looks but with her personality.

              Anonymous

It's one of the few humanizing moments Azula gets, but even so, it's unclear if she's honest or just trying to mimic introspection.
Part of the impression I get of Azula in canon is that, as a sociopath who's used to lying CONSTANTLY, she has no "genuine" self. She is the image she puts up, and that's why she falls apart so completely when the image cracks.

                Anonymous

I like to think she is honest in the beach episode. Maybe I just want to give her something I can justify my fanboyism with. Or maybe because I feel like we have a lot in common so it doesn't feel strange she lies constantly.

There's an interesting video called "Crossing the Cultural Uncanny Valley" about this topic, why China took to certain western media based on china like Kung Fu Panda but not Avatar or even a manga like Kingdom, which is literally about chinese history.

      ?si=08TK4MQmNqs0uysn

Basically shows like Avatar are just offputting to a chinese audience because it's just hodge podge of asian elements mashed together for the sake of the visuals or aesthetic but the actual foundations, themes, and ideas are very western. Another example would be that Awkwafina movie about the terminally ill mom whose condition is kept from her by her family to keep her at piece, the film was framed from the perspective of how a westerner would view such a practice (despite most of the characters being chinese) and it was a relatively big hit in America but it wasn't a big deal in China, because that sort of thing is already normal there.

I mean you COULD argue judging by the kiddy humor that Avatar at the beggining was targeted for little kids before the plot took a different turn and then they started forcing romantic sub plots by S3 and Korra, clearly targeting a more teenager demographic.

Best and most underrated Avatar girl. Azula is just too much of an attention hog among the fanbase.

A character with so much popularity like ty lee is far from being underrated.
If anything, I'd say she's underused by the writting staff on the final season.

Those are compelling arguments and I do really like Ty Lee, but that doesn't really change the fact that several characters eclipse her in popularity.

This is funny because you can also extend the analogy to Legend Of Korra being Avatar's version of the Prequels. Korra even failed for the same reason the Prequels failed: because Bryke, like Lucas, surrounded themselves with Yes Men because they'd become too big a deal to say no too, and as a result all their worst instincts took over the show.

Korra and the Star Wars prequels also share the same traits: follow-ups to a simpler classic that attempted to be more ambitious with its visuals and themes, faceplanted the execution and fricked up the lore and mystique of the setting but still managed to get its own fanbase.

It's going to be like the sequel trilogy in that it will ignore Korra's industrial theme and lore retcons in favor of just sticking with the medieval stasis of the original show's setting. It's what the Avatar prequel books are already doing, I don't think they've ever brought up Wan or Raava.

Obviously the prequels will stick to the medieval Chinese setting, but the little information will know about the sequel movie is that it takes place in Avatar's equivalent of "modern" times.
Also the Wan and Raava stuff feels like such esoteric knowledge even in-universe that I think it's not even relevant for most stories.

This time it was more like that some people working on it sabotage the show because they wanted to check the identity boxes that they wanted.
The dragon prince is full of gays and they still wanted more and tried to cancel Eshaz so they could push their ideas.
Because of that we got S4 which was completely garbage that broke up the main couple and put focus on the lesbians queen sub plot and introduced a trans character which almost nobody liked

Avatar is literally the peak of western "anime", It wasn't even animated by americans but koreans. It's as good as america is ever gonna get in the field now that it's cucked beyond repair.

Avatar was its own thing, all the cartoons that try harder to be like anime are worse, but you won't realize that because they don't even look like anime

Real non-shitpost answer is because it's too expensive to hire Americans to animate. Animation is an incredibly tedious process so it's far more convenient to get the rough animation done by the main studio in America and have the real work shipped off to a place with a far cheaper workforce to do the manual labor of the process.
Incidentally before Korea became the go to, it was Japan. But Japan's own animation industry boomed and it became too expensive to hire their animators. And now Japan is in a place where it does the exact same thing and outsources animation.

Cost of living. Animation cels cost money to draw, and Japanese and later Korean production studios were much, much cheaper than finding the needed 400 capable artists to draw in Burbank.

It's the same reason why everything started getting on computers, in flash, etc. To make a show profitable, it needs to cost as little as possible.

This analogy really is perfect, isn't it? You can even map the three seasons/books of ATLA to the three movies of the OT.

Book 1: Water is A New Hope. Not much truly ambitious storytelling but we're introduced to a great new world and characters we instantly like. The finale is an incredible spectacle that wows us out of our seats.

Book 2: Earth is The Empire Strikes Back. New characters are introduced, and deeper, more ambitious writing is given to the characters we've already met. The villain faction also regroups after their defeat in the first book/movie, and becomes far more successful and far more ruthless towards our heroes. The finale features our heroes suffering a significant defeat, and barely escaping with their lives. A downer ending, albeit one that nonetheless carries some hope.

Book 3: Fire is Return Of The Jedi. The final clash between the evil empire and our plucky band of rebels. However, though there are some truly amazing moments in the book/movie, questionable decisions about pacing and certain character arcs bog the book/movie down and it doesn't really reach the heights of its two predecessors. The finale is meant to be spectacular, and features our main hero in a moral dilemma about what to do with the villain. However, again, there are certain decisions made that drag it down and leave the ending more of a mixed bag than an outright triumph.

Yep, I made quite a lot of comparisons between Bryke and Lucas back when we got Korra...

What a shame it's all gone down like this. I have no hopes for that new ATLA show unless they bring back the old writing team...but I'm sure they won't.

None of the prequels are, the fact that you need to watch seven seasons of a saturday morning cartoon just to feel something from a movie that's coated with ESL dialogue and Spy Kids tier CGI doesn't make any of the films good.

The Clone Wars was made by Lucas, and most of the characters and stories came directly from him. "Dave Filoni's OC PowerHour" would be Star Wars: Rebels.

I'm like 90% sure they settled on Zuko/Mai as a sort of middle ground to appease self-insert fangirls that went hard into Zuko/Katara, since Mai's the most basic b***h socially awkward pre-teen girl carcature in the show and I guess the writers assumed it'd be an easy character for those people to self insert as.
Maybe they were afraid that the Stacy stealing their husbando would have been too upsetting?

What motives? We spent so little time with them we weren’t able virtually anything about them. Not even Zaheer gets any solid background for why he believes what he believes, P’li is the only one with any kind of personal stake in the Red Lotus’s goals which is simply because she loves Zaheer. The real reason people like the Red Lotus is because they’re all blank slates with enough perceived depth to theorize about.
