She's hallucinating, completely alone, and insane. The show makes the point that she's basically just on a random 0 IQ rampage instead of her usual craftiness and strategy. Even then, it still technically took two people.

Yeah throughout s2 she's not even that superior of a bender to most of the cast, she's precise and knows how to use environment well. That's why Zuko makes a point after boiling rock where he BTFOs her off the zep that she's slipping, even compared to fighting him on the gondola her spatial awareness isn't what it was. S2 Azula isn't running headfirst into the one water source Katara could use against her in a place she's known her whole life, so while comet Azula is more powerful her IQ also is non existent.

The cartoon has clearly shown the comet strengthens even the average bender thousandfolds. This completely disappears the moment Katara enters the fight because with just one move Azula would have burned through EVERYTHING Katara could throw at her.
      >b-b-ut Azula was dumb and Katara got where she wanted her!
It was shown better firebenders burned everything in their sight to a crisp. If Azula was truly delirious it would make even more sense she would have just tried to burn everything in her sight. Losing to Katara was the most unsatisfying ending for her.

She got stuck in solid ice/water when she was taking in a breath, doesn't matter how strong your fire is, no breath no fire. She was outplayed.

          >on the day of the comet pro firebenders can conjure up hundreds of meters long and thousands of meters wide flames effortlessly
          >she got outplayed
This is what I'm talking about. Fight starts, Azula takes a spin, everything around her is ash. Instead she conveniently chases Katara and gets close to her when it was absolutely not needed.

She just wanted her brother's seed.

If Zuko had been a responsible big brother and started fricking her once he returned to the Fire Nation, Azula would have defected with him.

by all rights its BS and Katara should have been at the airship, she was the member of the gaang who performed best against Azula. She would have crushed her like a twig under Ba Sing Se if it was a 1v1

Few people seem notice that Katara had her dead to rights until Zuko saved her and they switched partners.

Plot contrivance. Had they shown her be a lot more unstable before the comet it would have been fine but she was working without her "friends" for over a year.

To me there's just too much of a disconnect between pre-breakdown and post-breakdown Azula. I guess I don't know how psychotic episodes are IRL, but it doesn't feel as coherent for me that she can be so precise, so charismatic, so dominating, and so cunning before Sozin's Comet and then Ozai abandoning her basically instantly flips her crazy switch. As you say, we should have gotten more thorough foreshadowing of her being mentally unstable. She should have had a psycho moment before the series finale. Ideally more than one.

I think she started breaking down the moment Ty lee and Mai betrayed her
Probably a sense of being disillusioned was creeping up in her subconscious, but she was so brainwashed and groomed to follow the mission that she couldn’t reconcile it and follow that line of thought.
The biggest break was when her dad didn’t bring her in on his burn down the earth kingdom plan. The plan she came up with

It can be sudden like that, but a bit of built up would've made for a more interesting finish to the season.

Exactly, Azula didn't land a single hit on him the entire fight. He was dominating her.

What I don't get is that if her composure was completely shot, how was she able to bend lightning at all? And shouldn't her flames have cooled down to red if she's just going on pure rage instead of sociopathic calm.

Real answer: They didn't really think about it and there were multiple writers with different interpretations of what they wanted to happen. This is also why Aang's S3 arc seems all over the place.
My bullshit fanon answer: When it comes to pure bending she's perfectly calm and confident in her power, she's out of control emotionally but there's no uncertainty in her overall resolve no matter how hard her subconscious is trying to tell her she's wrong. Basically she's going through a lot and not thinking about actual technique or her environment at all so she's just going by on sheer muscle memory and will/drive which isn't faltering.

I thought this when I was like 12 and when the search came out I was super confused how she was actually a better bender or how she stayed crazy for like a year and a half. I thought it was like a flying too close to the sun situation and she'd burned up and had a complete breakdown and would come out the other side super reserved or defeated and not an arkham asylum character.

Ice is water, you fricking moron. Fire has no advantage. If anything it's water that's even HARDER to steam away.
