Guardians of the Galaxy was a huge success, and that was literally just a team of minor snarky quipping heroes. They've been chasing that ever since.

            >literally just a team of minor snarky quipping heroes.
Cooper and Pratt carried that those movies. They were well written, it's not a formula good choices have to be made

              Anonymous

Yeah, that's pretty much my point. The other guy saying it's all about how many toys the character sold in the 90s is missing that.

            Anonymous

The thing is, even guardians had stood the test of time. They seem to think you can just make a big expensive movie and people will latch on to the protagonist. It's not like that. All of the big MCU names had survived when there was a new hero coming out every week. They were refined over decades.
You can't just say "here's an ugly Muslim spic" and get the same results.

Wut? Guardians of the Galaxy were a dead franchise IN the Marvel Comics twice. First time they came back in 1990 and were a very very modest title for 3-4 years and then the group was literally DEAD until they brought it back in 2007 virtually completely unrelated to the previous series.

Lighting in a bottle, and incredibly difficult to replicate. It would be like making the New Warriors a household name and billion dollar brand by the end of the decade.

GotG was a success because it debuted when the MCU was at its cultural peak. There was that sense of ‘you have to watch everything to get the most of the Avengers’. That’s why things like GotG and Antman succeeded, they were carried by the popularity of Captain America and Iron Man and the like. And that’s the difference between GotG and the Eternals. By the time the Eternals movie came out, the hype for the MCU mostly died down. Eternals was no longer a must watch like GotG was. Even worse, they fricked up the structure of the MCU, the big Avengers movie that tied everything together, that made shit like Eternals and Shang-chi worth watching, they pretty much delayed that shit for so long that these characters and plot points no longer became interesting.

Guardians felt like Marvel's version of Deadpool. a goofy quipperino movie works set in a universe of generally serious movies with actual consequences and stakes. if every movie becomes a comedy it gets stale. i have no shame in saying i enjoyed the first few years of xmen and marvel but it got old pretty quickly.

Iron Man and Thor were by no means "big guns" pre-MCU. The movies made people care. So they pushed their luck to absurd end with shit like Rocket Racoon and somehow it kept working. Not hard to think that they could make people care about The Eternals or Shang Chi or whatever, given their track record. And honestly, if the movies were any good, massing it could have worked.

Pretty much yeah, the xmen were also huge for a long time and team up stories like the avengers sold well but iron man and captain america were never big names in the comic world (or I guess cap was a big deal around ww2)
Stuff like the guardians of the galaxy were a really niche thing before the mcu

I remember growing up somewhere without a comic store and the only comics I could find locally were sometimes spider man and sometimes batman or superman and nothing else. I didn’t know any of these characters even existed before the mcu came around

Sounds moronic but this is hollywood so it's a real possibility. But they already hired new actors for a dozen X-Men between The Last Stand & First Class. What makes this so different?

They fricked it up so bad. Phase 4 should have been centered around the X-men just like in the comics. Once the Avenger's popularity wanned down what brought Marvel back to life was X-Men. But I kinda understand why they are letting the franchise rest since Fox milked the shit out of it and was only able to produce like 2 decent movies in 20 years. X-men right now is still fresh in people's minds and is synonymous with mediocrity.

        Anonymous

It really doesn't help that they keep going member fox xmen with Dr Strange and Deadpool instead of cutting it off and getting the fresh start. Imagine being the guy that has to be the next wolverine after fox spent the last 20 years sucking him off like he is the only xman that exists

X-men were different because they were a metaphor for whatever injustice was socially relevant at the time. But that's not the case anymore, the MCU has lots of new heroes who's whole thing is "I'm a minority". They bring in the mutants and it'll just be more of the same, no one will care.

nu-Marvel failed because they fell into the same trap that fricked DC and Universal and all the other would-be cinematic universes, they tried to run before they could walk

Yes, the original Avengers (Iron Man, Cap, Thor, etc.) are more iconic and popular than the current randoms, but more than that, their solo movies were ACTUALLY solo movies. Their stories didn't have to serve as introductions for new characters and launchpads for new storylines. Iron Man 3 was about RDJ dealing with PTSD and he got through it all by himself. Thor 2 and 3 were about Thor and Loki working out their differences. Cap 2 and 3 started to bring in new characters or shared the spotlight, but they still managed to be fundamentally about Cap. He was still the most important character in those.

    Now look at nu-Avengers.
Holland Spidey is so uncharismatic he had to pad his own movies with Iron Man, Nick Fury, Daredevil, Venom, and Maguire/Garfield.
Captain Marvel barely even features in the trailers for her "sequel" movie, and is upstaged by the zoomer Paki and Monica Rambeau.
Black Panther 2 brought in black womyn Iron Man and Namor.
Dr Strange 2 had to share with Scarlet Witch and """America Chavez""".
Thor 4 had to share with Guardians of the Galaxy.

And so on. Throughout all these nu-Marvel movies you're constantly being hit over the head with the importance of the multiverse. MULTIVERSE MULTIVERSE MULTIVERSE. The early Marvel movies did not beat you over the head with Infinity Stones or Thanos. They let the stories be their own stories for the most part. Feige has forgotten how to do this. So when nu Marvel tries to do actual solo movies/series (Moon Knight, Eternals, Nick Fury's show) they fall flat, because they can no longer stand on their own. Feige has forgotten what made the early Marvel movies a success. He is officially lost in the sauce

the thor franchise apart from the 3rd one are all sharts.
they padded spiderman with tony because marvel didn't want sony getting too powerful.

Not hard to think that they could make people care about The Eternals or Shang Chi or whatever, given their track record. And honestly, if the movies were any good, massing it could have worked.

They should have rebooted after endgames. Start stories in a new universe/reality with new actors for the favorite characters. Try a darker tone with some, like bring back the alcoholic angle for the new iron man. You dont really "have to" anymore. Everything after Endgame is mumbo jumbo. The only thing that is related to each other is the Wanda show and dr strange movie. Nothing else is remotely related iirc, and it shows. Also it takes too long between relevant shit so people just forget or stop caring.

Is there a news of this kind of marketing where they talk about plans nonstop? It's like outrage media, but it's based on nothing verifiable.

    New batman in production.
    Heavy reshoots after poor testing.
New director brought in to fix mess.
Project scrapped costing several hundred million.
    Reboot planned with female batman.
Director: Our plan the whole time was to serve as a bridge to female batman.
Insider says hidden seen would have been the key to the new universe

You can really just make up anything. Especially if you know the real timetable for what the actual plans are. Why not just make up a bunch of shit before then to get clicks for whatever reason?

This news furthers my speculation that Feige & company have been winging the whole time. Too many rumors had come out over the years pointing to them having a very loose plan and lucking into most of their plots.
It’s finally coming back to bite them in the ass and after Secret Wars the era of capeshit might actually be over.

    >"[Marvel Studios] is aware of what's happening to their brand," she says. "My understanding, having talked to some people, is that 'Quantumania' really shook them, and I'm sure 'Secret Invasion' shook them further, but 'Quantumania' really shook them because they felt like they had something good. Because they all internally thought, 'Everyone's gonna love this.'"

    >"And then they put it out and people didn't. And then they were like, 'Oh no, our internal barometer is not attuned to what people want anymore.' With ‘Quantumania,’ they were like, 'We put out a banger.' And then that's not how a lot of people felt."

because to them movies are some moronic algorithm checklist of all the things a "hit" needs to have
if you just have most of the things the formula calls for in the movie, it must be successful
the lesson these morons will take from this is that the movie didn't have enough sassy gay characters or didn't have a big shocking moment at between 40 to 45 minutes or needs a cute but feisty sidekick, etc.

Yeah but Infinity War from the comics has nothing to do with Infinity War the movie. Same with Age of Ultron or Secret Invasion. They're just taking the names and a vague hint of the plot and make something even more dogshit.

they have to reboot because their timeline is so utterly fricked up on account of only having access to like 3 characters when they started up.
reboot should start with fantastic 4 and spiderman and not even frick with avengers as main characters. you could just go ff to spiderman to x-men with the rest of the big characters making cameos in movies or having tv shows. their entire franchise is built around the least interesting characters
