Yeah, Azula would basically be unstoppable, assuming she could master the Avatar state, and just as evil.

Thing had a cool initial concept and then decided to fumble it by turning it into "how can I make Azula do the exact same thing as Aang did?" and it just completely invalidated the entire premise. At least that's what it was for how many chapters in I managed to make it. I gave up after the southern air temple.
Honestly, what's the point of writing an AU if you're just going to go out of your way to make it as identical to the original as humanly possible?
Regrettably this is par for the course for most AUs. We had an interesting AU where Aang is killed in the Fire Nation purge of the Air Nomads and Korra is the one found years later by Katara and Sokka. Lots of potential and great ideas, but quickly boiled down into “what if this exact episode plot but Korra”
It's the main reason I stopped looking for straight-up AUs anymore.
Either they boil down to "It's exactly the same with some characters shuffled around" or "It changes so much that it's basically unrecognizable" with no healthy in-between

The avatars seem to go only as far back as they need to win spiritual guide stuff like it seems the more back in the Avatar cycle that Avatar was the hard it is for them to give spiritual advice.Also it seems normal that the avatars died as adults or old so Aang is probably the one who can best relate to her at the emotional level.
I mean, fair enough, but some kid that died at the age of twelve, didnt get the chance to uphold his avatar duties and has no real experience in the outside world isnt going to be a great source of advice outside airbending maybe.

Yes, but only because Korra bridged the elemental and spiritual worlds.
A simpler fix would be to say a handful of Air Nomads survived, but only one or two are still living by Azula's time.

a "bad" (not incompetent) is relative. It's supposed to be the great balancer so actions that disrupt the scales or balance in a way that the masses don't agree with would be considered bad. You can also toss on spirit stuff like the avatar forcing humans to concede things to spirits. It could be interesting but it's probably difficult to make an antagonist for

Depends on your definition of evil, I feel like between Rava and the weight of 0reviois avatar generations Influencing them an avatar couldn't be an outright psychopath, but could probably act in a manner seen as evil by others as long as they felt they were justified.
I'd argue all avatars were seen as evil by at least some minority of the world, like Aang being seen as evil by the fire nation, or Korra by the equalists.
Generally speaking the Avatar is usually a force of conservatism in the world, trying to keep things the way they are, so pretty much any revolutionary or reformist group probably doesn't see the avatar in the greatest light.

The Set Lore is meant for Cloth Wearers. It provides Intellect, Spirit, and a small bit of Spell Power. It can be crafted from high level tailors who have collected Mageweave cloth, a high level textile. Intellect increases your mana pool, Spirit how fast it regenerates every five seconds out of combat, and Spell Power increases the potency of your spells.
There is about three other recolors: Purple, Gold, and Crimson, each with more or less the same stats.
Katara could take either the Purple one or the Black One, and Azula the Red one.

Well, there would have been 100 years between Aang's death and Avatar Azula. If the Fire Nation committed to hunting down each new incarnation they'd have plenty of time to do it.
If the water avatar was Korra she could have been trained until she was fairly old and then gotten killed in battle because she's a moron. And since the FN controls like 3/4 of the earth kingdom the following earth avatar would have a huge chance of just getting caught early on unless he could be smuggled into Omashu or Ba Sing Se. Then the FN just has to keep an eye out in their own territories for the birth of their very own WMD.
If it's an Au where Avatar aang dies in the ice they can change the order of the Avatar cycle.
Or just have Aang die in the attack on the Air Nomads, then have the next two Avatars get killed too.
Or just change the fricking order.
That's even more convoluted, because then you'd need to change the order of the previous Avatars too, which poses an obvious problem with Roku and his role in the start of the war.
